2 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 3 Bill Dunn On Wednesday, Don't Be A Dumb Ash The month of February has many holidays. There s Groundhog s Day and Valentine s Day; there s Presidents Day and Mardi Gras. And there s America s newest religious festival day: Super Bowl Sunday. And in most years, February is the month when a very special day occurs, the official I Didn t Know You Were Catholic Day. That s right, this month millions of people throughout the country will arrive at work with a black smudge of ash on their foreheads, prompting co-workers to say, Oh, I could ve sworn you were Methodist. Ash Wednesday is the one day of the entire year when Catholics get the opportunity to let everyone know we are members of the Catholic Church. And as the ashes flake away from our foreheads, it s the one day of the year when we get to say, I shouldn t have worn a white shirt! Actually, we Catholics have the opportunity every single day to let others know what we believe. The problem with I Didn t Know You Were Catholic Day, er, I mean, Ash Wednesday, is that far too often our coworkers and friends, when seeing the ashes on our foreheads (and shirts), think to themselves, Catholic, huh? You sure don t act like it the other 364 days of the year. Continued...

3 Page 4 Our Lady of Lourdes Continued Of all the faith traditions around the globe, the Catholic faith most accurately understands human nature. First, we freely acknowledge that we are sinners. It s a fact: we often mess things up royally. Unfortunately, our modern culture has lost sight of this reality, and instead encourages people to avoid taking responsibility. Nowadays, whenever anything goes wrong, we immediately try to find someone or something else to blame. Secondly, the Catholic Church teaches repentance and forgiveness. This is so liberating. Instead of insisting that everything is always someone else s fault, we can be honest and admit our mistakes. Then we can repent and ask for forgiveness. This is a surefire formula for being in a healthy and loving relationship both with God and with our fellow human beings. The closer we are to God, the more His bright light of goodness exposes our shortcomings. But that s a wonderful thing. This is why people such as Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa went to Confession at least once a week. They were so close to God s brightness, they had to wear sunglasses at night. If holy people like that went to Confession so often, by comparison most of us should go once every, oh I don t know, every 20 minutes! On the other hand, the farther away we are from God, the less we see His bright light of goodness, and the less we measure ourselves against His holy standard. In the darkness, we start comparing ourselves to other people. And we can ALWAYS justify our behavior by finding someone else whose behavior is even worse. Well, I never robbed a bank, we say. I never committed murder. So I m OK. I m sure God loves me just the way I am. Well, God definitely loves us. That s a core Catholic belief. But God calls us to holiness. He doesn t want us to stay just the way we are. And most likely, our friends and loved ones don t want us to stay just the way we are either. They would be thrilled if we stopped being so self-centered and impatient. This Lent, let s really try to be more honest with ourselves, and to ask for God s forgiveness. Then maybe next year when we walk into work with ashes on our foreheads, our co-workers won t be surprised. But they ll still say, You shouldn t have worn a white shirt.

Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. 12 Our Lady of Lourdes Page 13 Fetal Development Days 6-7 after fertilization - Implantation into the mother's uterus begins. Cells continue to multiply and differentiate to perform specific functions - circulatory, muscular, neural and skeletal. Day 14 - Implantation is completed around this time. Day 20 - The child's heart, brain, spinal column and nervous system are almost complete. Eyes begin to form. Day 22 - The child's heart begins to beat. Day 28 - The child is approximately 1/4 inch long - 10,000 times larger than 3 weeks ago! The blood flowing in the child's veins is completely different than the mother's. Week 4 - Muscles are developing, and arms and leg buds are visible. The head is clearly identifiable, along with the major outlines of brain and eye vesicles, the beginnings of the central nervous system, notochord, mouth and pharynx, body cavity and the basis of the skeleton. Week 5 - The child's face is taking shape - the forehead, eyes, nostrils and mouth are evident; external ears are beginning; hand and foot plates appear in the limb buds. Week 6 - Brain waves can be recorded. The different muscles begin working together. Week 8 - The child's fingers and toes are fairly well defined, and fingerprints are permanently engraved on the child's skin. All organs are present, complete, and functioning, except for the lungs. Weeks 9 and 10 - All areas of the body are sensitive to touch. The child can suck its thumb, swallow, squint, and frown. If the child's palm is stroked, he will make a tight fist. Weeks 11 and 12 - The child now has fingernails, toenails and working taste buds, and can make facial expressions. Month 4 - The child's heart is pumping 6 gallons of blood every day, and the mother can feel the child moving - exercising the muscles and lungs. Rapid eye movement (REM) can be recorded, indicating that the child is dreaming. Months 5 and 6 - The child weighs about 1 pound. If the child was born now, there is a 50% chance of survival with the help of dedicated doctors and nurses. Months 7 and 8 - The child opens and closes her eyes and can recognize her mother's voice. If the child is born now, the chance of survival increases to 90%. Month 9 - At birth, the child usually weighs between 7 and 9 pounds, and is between 18 and 21 inches long! ***************************************** The New York State Catholic Conference has launched a new website with a video that focuses on Catholic End of Life Decision Making: A bill (A.2129, Rosenthal) has been introduced in the NYS Assembly to legalize physician-assisted suicide. A Memorandum of Opposition has been issued by the NYS Catholic Conference stating, "...the title of the legislation itself - the 'death with dignity act' - is biased against those persons who allow a natural death to occur, inferring that a natural death is somehow less dignified than assisted suicide. Similarly, language used throughout the legislation references 'ending life in a humane and dignified manner,' suggesting that allowing natural death to occur is 'inhumane and undignified.' We find this language to be biased and insulting. Legalizing physician assisted suicide would blur longstanding medical, moral and legal distinctions between withdrawing extraordinary medical assistance and taking active steps to destroy human life...undermine the physician's role as healer, forever alter the doctor-patient relationship, and lessen the quality of care provided to patients at the end of life...lead to psychological, financial and other pressures for vulnerable persons to end their lives...rather than assisting suicide, government should be consistent in its efforts to prevent suicide. It is illogical for the state to promote/facilitate suicide for one group of persons - calling the suicides of those with a terminal illness and a specific prognosis 'dignified and humane,' while recognizing suicide as a serious statewide public health concern in all other circumstances, and spending enormous resources to combat it...we urge the state to remove barriers and improve access to palliative care and hospice care for those in the final stages of terminal illness. Improved education and training of physicians in pain management, together with appropriate diagnosis and treatment for depression, would go a long way toward eliminating calls for suicide among the sick and dying."
