Baptismal preparation classes are offered on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Parents are encouraged to attend the 10:30 AM mass on the 2nd Sunday and the preparation class will follow the mass in the Rectory. All couples seeking to baptize a child must attend the class. Baptisms are preformed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at 2PM. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment at (516) Confessions Saturdays, Eves of Holy Days and Eves of First Fridays 4:00 to 5:00pm. Marriages The prospective bride and groom should discuss details of the marriage with one of the priests of the parish at least six months prior to the date of the wedding. 3 Page 3 Dear Friends: Our Lady of Lourdes Parish A Letter from the Pastor s Desk I would like to share some thoughts for Christmas with you This is how it happened I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. What are you doing? I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw that he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement. TEACH THE CHILDREN! I was puzzled; what did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement, he brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said, Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten. Santa then reached into his bag, pulled out a fir tree, and placed it before the mantle. Teach the children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind. All the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man s thoughts turning toward heaven. He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant star. Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise. He then reached into his bag and pulled out a candle. Teach the children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness. Once again he reached into his bag and removed a wreath and placed it on the tree. Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection. He then pulled from his bag an ornament of himself. Teach the children that I, Santa Claus, symbolize the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December. He then brought out a holly leaf. Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly represents the blood shed by Him. Next he pulled from his bag a gift and said, Teach the children that God so loved the world that He gave His begotten son. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. Teach the children that the wise men bowed before the Holy Babe and presented Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men. Santa then reached into his bag and pulled out a candy cane and hung it on the tree. Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherds crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother s keeper. He reached in again and pulled out an angel. Teach the children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior s birth. The angels sang, Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men. Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a bell. Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa looked back and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the center, for I am but the humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship Him, our Lord, our God. 4 Page 4 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish In Appreciation As this year marks the 25th anniversary of my priestly ordination, I give thanks to God and to the pastor, the priests, deacons, sisters, and all the faithful of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish for their encouragement and support. I am sincerely grateful to all of you for your prayers and goodwill messages. I will every pray that the Lord in His kindness would bless each and every one of you with good health of mind and body. If you wish, you may share in this holy season with a poinsettia plant or another memorial of your choice for someone you love. Simply print your name and the name of your loved one on an envelope or use the Christmas Memorial envelopes found in the Church lobby or rectory. For the poinsettia plants insert your donation as listed below and return it to the Rectory or place it in the collection basket. All other memorials must be obtained at the Rectory due to the limited quantities. The deadline is December 17th. All names will be published in our Sunday/Christmas bulletin on December 24th ( Anything received after the deadline will be published the following week.) 7 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Page 7 From the Our Lady of Lourdes Department of Religious Education Week Ten of Religious Education classes are scheduled for Wednesday, December 13 and Saturday, December 16 Parents: Please remember to check your child s book every week for important, time-sensitive announcements that are sent home! Upcoming Important Dates: Wednesday, December 13: Level 8 Confirmation Interviews continue. Guidelines were distributed to the students. Sunday, December 17: Level 7 10:30 am Family Mass - There will not be a class before the Mass. Students and families should meet in the church at the reserved section on the right side at 10:15am. Students must sign in. Christmas Break: No classes on Wednesdays December 20 and 27, or Saturdays December 23 and 30. Our office will be closed from Wednesday December 20 through Monday January 1 in celebration of Christmas. Parent Faith Formation Evenings: Father Tony s Theology Classes are hiatus for the winter. They will resume on Wednesdays, March 7 & 21, April 4 & 18, May 9 & 23-7:30pm to 9pm in the Church Basement. ************ Eighty of our Level 2 students received their First Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday, December 2. They were well prepared after spending many hours learning about God s healing mercy and forgiveness, learning how to say the Act of Contrition, and learning the procedure for Confession. This could not have been done without the dedication and caring of their catechists, Ms. Sue Bouffier, Mrs. Carey Persico, Mrs. Theresa Burke, Ms. Marie Sanon, Mrs. Christine Salvo, Mrs. Kathy Sullivan, Ms. Laura Kesselman, Mrs. Francine Meyreles, and Ms. Chantal Devot. Special thanks to Mrs. Angela Buffalino for overseeing all the details of the Penance ceremony and to Level 2 coordinator Ms. Sue Bouffier for her tireless efforts to implement the curriculum for Penance preparation. Our Level 6 students created beautiful posters to display and present at our Faith Fair which was held on Wednesday, November 29. Each poster explored a deep question of faith, such as: How can I put my faith in action in today s world? Can you find miracles in our modern times? and Why must we go to Mass? First place ribbons were awarded to Julianne Peterson, Jessica Popowich and Troy Dubiel. Second place ribbons were awarded to Brian Queran, Thomas Meade, and Jason Kovaluskie. Third place ribbons were awarded to Victoria Cammarata, Elaina Finnerty and Kiera Rowan. Thanks to our Level 6 catechists Mrs. Trish Kavavy, Mrs. Leah Irving, Mrs. Joselyn Kolt and Mrs. MaryAnn Kovaluskie for facilitating this educational activity.

Next Meeting: December 14th CATHOLIC CHARITIES / Talbot House, a Chemical Dependence Crisis Center, located in Bohemia provides withdrawal and stabilization services on a voluntary basis to males and females over the age of 18, who are seeking to stop and/or withdraw from alcohol and/or other drug use. The medical and clinical staff at Talbot House will assess the kind of care the person needs, to begin his/her journey in recovery. On behalf of all those we are privileged to serve, thank you to all the good people of our parish family who continue to support our wonderful food pantry. May all the good you do for others return to you in abundance! Currently our food pantry is in need of: Tomato Sauce, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Coffee, and Chef Boyardee Please continue to be as generous as your means allow. As our wonderful group of Care Blanket volunteers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing! Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 2,762. I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at coat DRIVE Parish Outreach is again organizing a Fall Coat Drive to assist our neighbors in need. Outreach will need your help and cooperation to make this a successful undertaking. Through the month of DECEMBER Parish Outreach will be happy to accept NEW or CLEAN, or Gently Used, Warm Coats and Jackets for adults and children. So please take a look through your closets and consider donating those unwanted/ unnecessary coats and jackets that are still in very good condition. We will of course provide a tax deductible receipt for the value of your donated winter coats, if needed. PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY OTHER ARTICLES OF CLOTHING COATS or JACKETS ONLY, as we do not have storage space for other clothes. Kindly bring your COAT donations directly to the Parish Outreach Office. Christmas Giving Tree As we look forward to the Christmas season, the Christmas Giving Tree will again be displayed in the entrance of the Church as of the weekend of November 25 & 26, until Sunday, Dec.17h for your consideration. Please consider taking an ornament and purchasing the suggested gift card in an amount of your choosing. We will begin distribution of the Giving Tree Gift Cards the week of Dec. 11th, to allow our neighbors in need time to shop for their families. 18 Page 18 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish PRO LIFE NEWS MARCH FOR LIFE 2018 The March for Life in Washington, DC will be held on Friday, January 19, The Rally will take place at noon at 12 th Street on the National Mall, between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive. The March will begin on Constitution between 12 th and 14 th Streets at approximately 1pm. The March ends in front of the Supreme Court. Please consider attending the March for Life. Information regarding buses from Long Island to Washington will be in future bulletins. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE MEMORIAL MASS FOR CHRISTMAS to honor the memory of the unborn, sponsored by Knights for Life: Tuesday, December 26 th at 7:30pm, Msgr. The Tunisian lawyer said he is an ardent defender of the handicapped This doesn t mean that we are against the disabled or that we won t help the disabled when born disabled. But that does not mean that we have to accept to let a disabled fetus live. This is a preventive measure So this is where we will find the difference between the birth of the human being. Once he is born, it is finished; with a handicap or without a handicap, he must live, and we must protect absolutely, in an absolute manner, his right to life So us, we defend the right of the handicapped, but we can avoid the handicaps, and we must do everything we can to avoid them. And it is not contradictory. A young woman named Charlotte, who has Down Syndrome, responded to Ben Achour on YouTube. She said, You need to apologize for your horrible comments. You should also be removed from the Human Rights Committee as an expert. You are not an expert about Down Syndrome. You sir, do not speak for my community. As far as I know, my community does not hate, discriminate, or commit crimes. What you are suggesting is eugenics. It s disgusting and evil. SUICIDE MACHINE WITH DETACHABLE COFFIN: Euthanasia promoter Philip Nitschke created a new 3D printed suicide machine - the Sarco. He said it will offer people a chance to die a peaceful and elegant death. Users must complete an online mental questionnaire to establish their mental competency to get a 4-digit access code for the capsule. Once inside, they can start the machine with a click of the button, voice activation, or by a series of blinks for paralyzed patients. Liquid nitrogen fills the capsule after activation, causing oxygen to drop. While the base is reusable, the pod in which the person ends their life can be used as a biodegradable coffin. The plans will be available to anyone with the funds to access or purchase a 3D printer. Nancy Valko, RN, said the machine will open the doors for more abuses. Individuals who need society s help the most will be pushed toward suicide rather than presented with the support they need and deserve. Valko stated that Nitschke is attempting to glamorize and normalize suicide. He tempts those who are afraid of pain, who fear their lives are too burdensome, with a death machine that appears simple and painless. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are not about helping people. They are based on discrimination, destruction and ultimately, the devaluing of human life.
