3 Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish A Letter from the Pastor s Desk SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 Dear Friends: The past two weeks have seen our Church cast into a painful situation, once again, when it comes to the protection of children and the responsibility of the Church to be reformed and put children before corporate interests. In focusing on this topic, I've included a column written by former Newsday religion reporter Bob Keeler for your consideration. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Bob Keeler has written a powerful and challenging piece. He is not just a former newspaper writer, but a believing and practicing Catholic Christian who loves his faith. I hope you find his writing helpful. The column is printed after my letter. Some have asked me about the case of our own Bishop John Barres in this tragedy of Pennsylvania. Last week I produced here, the statement of Bishop Barres on his role in the situation in Allentown (where he previously served as diocesan bishop). Having gotten to know the Bishop over the past year and a half of his time in our diocese, I believe his intentions were and are honorable. He made what he determined to be a prudential decision to protect children by limiting the freedom of a priest who was an abuser. We can debate the wisdom of this decision, but it seems truly rooted in what he determined was in the best interest of young people. It is unfair and irksome to hear people wonder aloud if Bishop Barres is like other bishops we've known in this diocese who failed to protect children. His judgment in this situation reflects a wrestling of conscience rooted in sincerely good intentions. There is no fair comparison between Bishop Barres' leadership in Allentown and tragic decisions made in the Archdiocese of Boston. Finally, a word about the attack made by former Papal Envoy Archbishop Vigano on Pope Francis. I have no idea if he did or did not 'warn' Pope Francis about the dangers of Cardinal McCarrick. What I do know is that it's outrageous for him to call for the resignation of Pope Francis unless he's also willing to be critical of the woeful leadership offered by Pope John Paul and Pope Benedict when it comes to the scourge of child abuse. They led our Church for more than 30 years at a time when some of the worst cases of abuse took place. There is no doubt that BOTH previous pontiffs were aware of the wideness of this evil. Both can fairly be criticized for doing too little, too late. So unless the true motive for Archbishop Vigano's attack on Pope Francis is his dislike for some of the Holy Father's progressive agenda, he should have the integrity to offer criticism of ALL recent popes. No one comes away from the abuse of children and the coverup that made it possible clean or innocent. Pray for our Church, fight for true reform, so that this never happens again. Ever. In the Love of Christ, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor Aforementioned article printed on the back of this page...

4 Page 4 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 Pope Francis Responsibility is Clear BY BOB KEELER Newsday.com Jesus diagnosed in his tiny band of followers the early stages of the cancerous clericalism that would gnaw at his church, a disease at the heart of the ongoing scandal of clergy sexual abuse. Before the furor over the Pennsylvania grand jury fades, Pope Francis must go beyond words and act decisively to conquer clericalism. The cancer showed up early, when the mother of two apostles asked Jesus for their future glory: Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom, (Matthew 20:20). The other apostles were angry, and Jesus offered stern advice: Don t lord it over people. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant... Jesus set the example for radical selflessness and made humble servant leadership the goal for church leaders. But two millennia later, the poisonous notion survives that clerics are close to God and know what s best, and everyone else should listen. That s part of the sexual abuse tragedy. The classic abuse pattern is a powerful person using that power to take sexual advantage of a powerless person. But priests and bishops have an element of power that no coach or producer can claim: the notion that ordination confers on them an ontological change, elevating them to a special order of beings. On top of the theology, there are the symbols: the pointed miter on the bishop s head, the gold-encrusted crozier, a glamorized shepherd s crook that every bishop carries to show he s a shepherd, the elaborate vestments, the use of worshipful terms like your eminence when people address cardinals. It all adds up to an air of divinely ordained power. So, in the past, when a child attracted the attention of a priest, the parents would be thrilled by this proximity to godliness. The child would feel compelled to obey this superhuman creature. Father could do no wrong. But too many priests did something horribly wrong. Francis himself is suspicious of clericalism. He wants the shepherds to smell as if they ve been in the pungent presence of the sheep. But that has not borne fruit. What can he do next? He should name clericalism for what it is, structural sin, and appoint a special commission to find ways of eradicating it. That commission should have zero members from the clergy. They are, after all, the problem. And when the commission reports, he should act strongly on its recommendations. As to how to structure the church s reaction to future revelations of abuse, Francis needs to restructure the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors that he named in It ran into Vatican roadblocks, and an Irish survivor of abuse, Marie Collins, resigned in frustration. Francis should add new members, with some seasoned prosecutors on the list, remove all clergy, and instruct the commission to report regularly on obstruction by the Vatican. Its mandate should include positive recommendations for changes in the statute of limitations, which the church has fought diligently and selfishly. The commission also should closely examine seminaries, which are turning out too many young priests who eagerly embrace clericalism. Before the conclave that chose Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the bishop of Rome, I wrote a column saying that I hoped the new pope, whoever he might be, would recognize that the church was in need of repair, as it was in the time of St. Francis of Assisi, and call himself Pope Francis. He did. But five years later, the church is more in need of repair than ever. Time for Francis to roll up his sleeves and get to it.

19 Page 19 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 Helping Parents Heal A safe place for bereaved parents, family and friends Helping Parents Heal is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help parents whose children have passed on, giving them support and resources to aid in the healing process. We are a place to find comfort, understanding and support after losing a child. A place to find hope and inspiration. A place to share your stories and memories. We go a step beyond other groups by allowing the open discussion of spiritual experiences and afterlife evidence but in a non-dogmatic way. Everyone is welcomed regardless of religious (or non-religious) background and allow for a very open type of dialog. We do not judge people or their children on the basis of life choices. Through personal experience, the leaders of Helping Parents Heal have come to recognize several factors that contribute to the healing process. These elements include caring support for others, interaction with people who have also experienced loss, service to others, personal transformation and, perhaps most importantly, discovering a reason for hope. In particular, we are referring to hope that comes from acknowledging our spiritual nature and understanding that our loved ones continue on in spiritual form after physical death. Some spiritual practices exercised by any Helping Parents Heal leaders include Reiki Healing, meditation, prayer, yoga and service to others. We are an all embracing and non-religious organization that respects the various ways people choose to express their own spirituality. Helping Parents Heal will be meeting monthly in the school library starting on Thursday, September 13 th from 7pm 9pm at Our Lady of Lourdes parish, Massapequa Park, NY. Any family members or friends are welcome to attend. You are invited to bring a picture of your child as well. For more information, please contact Diane Wilshere dwilshere@yahoo.com
