3 Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes October 9, 2016 Opening the Word: Delight of duty As we go about our lives serving God and others, let us do it out of love, without seeking recognition Timothy P. O'Malley OSV Newsweekly There is something about the human condition that craves recognition. The politician wants to not simply perform a duty but to enter the pantheon of great public figures. A great parent, giving all of oneself to the child out of love, still longs for a note of thanks at the child s graduation or wedding. This desire for recognition rubs against Jesus words in the Gospel. Today s text from the Gospel of Luke begins with a discussion of faith. The apostles ask Jesus for an increase in faith. There is no particular reason that the apostles make this request. But, Jesus words suggest that he does not entirely approve of their request: If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would (Lk 17:6). We often think about Jesus word as comforting: If we only had faith as small as a mustard seed, then we could do anything. But, Jesus is chastening the apostles, who perhaps imagine that they want a bit more faith on top of their already massive commitment to the reign of God. Imagine Jesus saying, If you had the tiniest bit of faith, even the smallest, do you not realize what you would be able to do? You might not be able to move mountains, but you could at least tip over this very large bush replanting it in the midst of the sea. Right now, you don t even have that. Understanding the difficulty of Jesus words helps to make sense of the rest of the Gospel. Jesus asks the apostles to consider their identity as servant or slave to the kingdom of God. What servant or slave would expect to be given the highest place at the table? The vocation of the servant is to serve, not to receive recognition for one s excellence. This is a hard teaching. Discipleship is not fundamentally a competition relative to the quantity or quality of one s faith. It is instead about the practice of showing up, the delight of duty. It is the concrete commitment to love God and neighbor in everything that one does. And to expect no recognition for this gift of self, because one is simply joyfully following the footsteps of the beloved Son. When we preach the Gospel in public, we should not expect recognition for the sweetness of our speech. When we speak out against injustice, we should not expect letters of commendation for our work. When we raise our children in self-giving love within the hiddenness of family life, we should not expect the world to notice us. After all, we re just doing our duty. This kind of commitment to the hidden work of love is difficult. Because we abide in a world in which recognition is key, such hiddenness can be an act of ascesis or discipline. For this reason, we must constantly stand before God in prayer. The words of Psalm 95 must function as a mirror for us: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Ps 95:1).Have I heard the voice of God this week in the Scriptures? In the poor? Have I responded with the duty of love appropriate to discipleship? These questions must be ever before us. Through this concrete act of discernment, we may discover that we no longer crave the kind of recognition that makes discipleship difficult. Instead, we carry out the delight of duty with love. The irony of this, of course, is that through delight of duty, we may even become a saint. Timothy P. O Malley is the director of the Notre Dame Center for Liturgy.

6 Page 6 Our Lady of Lourdes October 9, 2016 Food Pantry Parish Outreach As we look forward to and enjoy this beautiful season of Fall, it too reminds us it s that time of year when we begin to prepare for Thanksgiving! With the help of our good and generous parishioners, along with some wonderful organizations in our community, Parish Outreach will begin accepting your holiday donations for Thanksgiving Food Baskets. Please take a look at our annual Thanksgiving Flyer posted in the bulletin for further details and listing of items needed to prepare holiday baskets. Your kindness toward those less fortunate has always been a great blessing, as together we can continue to provide the gift of a Happy Thanksgiving to our neighbors in need. On behalf of all the families we are privileged to serve, thank you for your support. Ministry of Consolation Donations can be brought directly to Parish Outreach, or for your convenience, items may be placed in the usual baskets provided in the entrance of the church during weekend masses. Parish Outreach hours are Monday thru Thursday 9:00am 4:00 pm We Care Blankets As our wonderful group of Care Blanket volunteers continue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing! Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 2,101 I m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gariboldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration. Paper Goods Drive On occasion, the folks who come to us for food assistance will ask if we can provide paper products such as toilet paper or paper towels. Food donations, as you know, remain our first priority! However, it would be a helpful addition to the folks we serve if we could offer some assistance with paper goods. If you would consider a donation of toilet paper or paper towels that would be a wonderful thing! Thank you for all the good you do!

7 Page 7 Our Lady of Lourdes October 9, 2016 WE NEED YOUR HELP As Thanksgiving approaches, we ask all to be as generous as possible in contributing to our food pantry. We will be making Thanksgiving Food Baskets for many needy families in our parish. We will be assembling Baskets in the next coming weeks. Last year through your generosity, we were able to provide Thanksgiving baskets to more than 240 families from our parish and the immediate surrounding area. We are anticipating a greater demand this Thanksgiving, as the past year has seen a marked increase in families looking to us for assistance. Below is a shopping list of items we will be using to make up the baskets. We will begin accepting donations now through November 14th. May we ask you to inspect the expiration dates on intended donations? Please bring the items to the Food Pantry no later than Monday, Nov. 14th, since we will be distributing Thanksgiving Baskets the week of Nov. 14th. Parish Outreach hours are Monday - Thursday from 9am - 4pm. Please feel free to donate any or all of the items on the list to complete a basket. Please do not bring any perishable items including turkeys or hams at this early date, because we do not have the facilities to store them. Kindly consider a Gift Card in lieu of a turkey. However if you choose to donate a frozen turkey or ham, please bring them to the Outreach office only on the days of November 15th, (Tues), November 16th, (Wed) and November 17th (Thurs), when we will be distributing the Thanksgiving food baskets. Thank you for your continued kindness and generosity to our neighbors in need. Gift cards would be much appreciated as they provide for perishables items. This would be an excellent opportunity for Girl Scout Troops, Boy Scout Troops and Confirmation Candidates as a Christian Service Project, to participate in this much needed community effort. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan issued the following statement: No American taxpayer should be forced to pay for abortions. The Hyde Amendment has been the cornerstone of protecting conscience for 40 years and is responsible for saving more than 2 million American lives. Make no mistake: The Hyde Amendment will remain central in our fight for life until the day Roe v. Wade is overturned entirely. Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has called for reversing the Hyde Amendment and forcing Americans to fund free abortions for women with tax dollars. Republican candidate Donald Trump supports making the Hyde Amendment permanent and banning almost all federal tax funding of abortions. PROPOSED HHS RULE: The Dept of Health & Human Services has proposed a rule that could prevent states from blocking Title X funds (federal dollars for family planning services) to abortion companies like Planned Parenthood. Representatives have sent a bipartisan and bicameral letter to HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell opposing this proposed rule stating: We are strongly urging HHS to reconsider this wildly overreaching and politically motivated rule, giving states the ability to govern themselves in the ways they see fit. 17 Page 17 Our Lady of Lourdes October 9, 2016 Our Lady of Lourdes Nocturnal Adoration Society is looking for new members. Please see the information below which explains what this organization is all about. Please call the rectory to leave your name and phone number if you are interested in joining or would like more information. What is the Nocturnal Adoration Society? The Nocturnal Adoration Society is an association of Catholics dedicated to prayer before the Eucharist for the praise of God and for the needs of the world. What is the purpose of the Society? To unite the members in prayer before the exposed Sacrament during the hours of the night. To deepen the experience of communion with Christ Eucharistic, as he continues his self-offering and saving power, and to revitalize Christian commitment toward the "new evangelization." To pray for the needs of the church and the world at large. Who can be members? Membership is open to all Catholics. There is no age limit. What does the membership entail? Only to spend one hour once a month during the hours of the night, on a given night and at a designated hour, in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed in a church where the Society, in the form of a local chapter, is established. There are no dues and no prescribed activities other than prayer. Why do members pray before the exposed sacrament? When praying before the Eucharist exposed, the mind and heart more easily give themselves to communion with Christ. By focusing attention on the sacramental sign of the memorial of the Lord in a spirit of adoration, thanksgiving, atonement, and petition, members seek to internalize and give witness to the significance of the Eucharist for Christian life. Why do members pray at night? For reasons of convenience. For many people living in a fast-paced society, a night hour is often more easily set aside for prayer than one during the day and lends itself to praying in quiet, calm, and recollection. For reasons of symbolism. Keeping vigil during the hours of the night an ancient tradition among Christians draws attention to God as the source of light and goodness amid human weakness and sin, and also stimulates a sense of spiritual preparedness and expectation. How are members of a chapter organized for the hour of prayer? Local chapters are encouraged to organize their hours of prayer according to a rotating system, traditional in the Society, whereby the members, month by month, share equally the easier and more difficult hours. Within this system, there is provided a fixed hour for those who, for various reasons (illness, advanced age, shift work, etc.), cannot take part in the rotating system. On which night of the month is the vigil held? The night of the first Friday of the month into Saturday morning; What do members do during the hour? During the hour, there are periods of common prayer and periods of silent prayer. For the common prayer, it is traditional in the Society to use the liturgical prayer taken from the Liturgy of the Hours as well as other dialogue prayer texts in the Society's prayer book. The silent prayer periods are for personal meditation and contemplation.
