1 Sermon for the Feast of the Epiphany (transferred) December 31, 2017 Church of the Nativity-Episcopal, Indianapolis The Rev. Susan M. Smith, Ph.D. Isaiah 60:1-6 Psalm 72:1-7,10-14 (Psalm 72) Ephesians 3:1-12 Matthew 2:1-12 O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Isaiah 60:1-6 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. Ephesians 3:1-12 This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles-- for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to
2 me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. Matthew 2:1-12 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: `And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.'" Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gift of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. Happy 7 th Day of Christmas! Today we are celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. As the song says, Christmas is a 12-day season, with Christmas Day as the 1 st day, and Jan. 5 as the 12 th day. On big festivals, Christians keep time in the Hebrew way, sundown to sundown, and we start celebrating the night before: so we have big services Christmas Eve, the Easter Vigil, Hallowe en which is the night before All Hallows (All Saints Day), and even New Year s Eve. Shakespeare helps us remember this with his play Twelfth Night: The 12 th Night is the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany, which is the next day, January 6 every year. --However, we rarely get to celebrate it, since Jan. 6 only falls on Sunday every 7 years. So today we have transferred the Feast of the Epiphany from Jan. 6 to today, the 7 th day of Christmas.
3 During our Church year, we celebrate 3 great cycles: (1) the Cycle of Incarnation, which is Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany a season of preparation, a festal season, and a culminating day and (2) the Cycle of Redemption, which is Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Epiphany concludes the Cycle of the Incarnation of God as a human being, carne, in the flesh. It is a very important holiday. It s the day the Wise Ones brought gifts to the Baby Jesus. In the Middle Ages in the west, and in Orthodox Christian traditions, the day people exchanged gifts was not Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but the Feast of the Epiphany When the Wise Men brought gifts to Jesus was when we gave gifts to each other. Many Orthodox Christians continue this tradition today. For some Orthodox, including those killed in Cairo this past week, the calendar is different, and Christmas Day itself is celebrated around this time. So WHY DO WE CELEBRATE the Feast of the Epiphany? What does epiphany even mean? The Greek word phanos means manifestation, showing forth. Epi, as in epidermis, means outward or outside. Epiphany is the manifestation of Christ as the Son of God, God incarnate, outside the Jewish faith. From the beginning, God-in-Christ was made known beyond Jews, to the Gentiles. And this is the meaning of the story of the Wise ones from the East. These guys were astrologers from the East. We think they were Zoroastrian (from Persia). They read the stars, the heavens, to seek wisdom. And they really knew the heavens. One December I went to the Planetarium in Cincinnati and the program was on the Star in the East. The astronomer explained that astrologers were all very familiar with the 12 signs of the zodiac, and when they appeared, and in which part of the sky. In the year of Jesus s birth, the constellation LEO the Lion was prevalent. One star in this constellation was always located at the heart of the lion, and this star was called REGIUS, also REGULUS: the kingly star at the heart of the lion, the king of beasts. However, 2,000 years ago [in the year 4 BCE which is probably when Jesus was actually born, given the years when the Herods reigned, etc.), something amazing happened: two planets, which are so close they appear to be brighter than stars, happened to constellate right around Regius so there was a HUGE BRIGHTNESS right at the heart of Leo. It was obvious to those who read the heavens that something of a royal nature, something about a King, was occurring. And so they got their camels and decided to check it out. They were not Jews (and, of course, they were not Christian). But they recognized a Cosmic King; and they honored him. Christ was manifest to all; these recognized him.
4 I must say that I think these guys were smart about the heavens. They were good astrologers. They could see that something magnificent and kingly was occurring in the world. But in my view, what made them wise was that they sought wisdom. What shows them to be wise is that they cared so much about the huge occurrence manifested in the heavens that they quickly broke out of their daily routine and gave up everything else in order to pursue this great thing that was happening, in order to explore, to find out, to witness to God s work in the world. They saw the sign; they followed their hearts. They did not have certainty; they had a sign. And it mattered enough to go explore what was happening. In my book, THIS is what made them wise. It reminds me of my brother s college fraternity friend in When he had an inkling that the Berlin Wall was going to come down, he had to go. He was a college student, with no money and no job. But he figured it out. It was so important to him to witness this world-shaking event!!! He, like the Wise Ones, was willing to take a risk, to try something, to go and see, even though he didn t know what it was he would see or experience. If you want to be wise, try something. Take a risk. Try it anyway. No blandness for these guys. They had curiosity and passion. Another example is someone I knew at Procter and Gamble. He and his wife had a son on the Asperger spectrum who needed a special school. So to support their son, they picked up their lives in Cincinnati, sold their house, quit their jobs, and moved to across the country so their son could attend the excellent school that enabled him to develop his skills and have a life. They did not find jobs in the new city right away. It wasn t easy. It wasn t a smooth, easy transition. It was full of risk. But their son is thriving. They were wise enough to be willing to undergo risk and sacrifice for what matters the most. My friends, we re living in a time when everything is at stake. Our nation. Our ethics. Our planet. Our character. Our way of life. Our principles. As we embark upon a new year, let us take an example from the wise ones. SEEK WISDOM because, as Scripture points out, she is the most important: Above power Above fame Above familiarity More than comfort or convenience More than tradition More than expectations
5 In this new year, let us pay attention. Study. Watch. Listen. Find what really matters. Then, pray, and TAKE A RISK. Follow what you know to be True. If the Lord nudges you, try it. If it s strange, do it anyway. If others think you re crazy, do it anyway. The Lord is manifest in the unexpected, to all people and circumstances, even where you least expect to find holiness. What are the signs that the time is now for you to go for the New Thing the Lord is doing, even if it s a real stretch? Go ahead. Get out your camel, and take a ride. Take a present. And get ready to be surprised. It won t look like what you expect. So look even deeper for the Wisdom in it. GOD WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU even though you ll have to take a different way home. For the Greatest Gift has already been given to us and that Gift has been given within us. WE who follow Christ the Gift, are ourselves gift to the world. Even us scared, small, incompetent sinners. Yes, it s we the Lord has called. This year. Let us enjoy sharing the surprising gifts God will manifest to us this year and let us seek Christ s wisdom, together.
