Dreamers are children who were brought here by their parents and lack citizenship status. Arriving in the United States as children and growing up in Phoenix, they worked tirelessly to become high achievers. By earning top grades and scholarships, as well as inspiring donations, they are determined to complete their education. Although they have been granted deferred action status (DACA), their paths to achieving their dreams have been incredibly challenging. Join us to better understand who these Dreamers are and why it is in our best interest to help them achieve their dream of education and jobs. Register by calling Amy at x 132 or Franciscan Action Circle members will be in the Hospitality area after all the masses on February 15 & 16 to answer questions and take registrations. Stop by to learn more about this important event. Members of Just Scripture Share Their Reflection Today s Readings Just Scripture is a Faith in Action group which meets on the 2 nd Sunday of each month to discuss the Scripture readings for upcoming weekend. The meeting on Jan 12 th explored the readings for today. Isaiah 58: 7-10; 1 Corinthians 2: 1-5 and Matthew 5: Pam Bork, a long time member of the Casa community, shared her research into the salt and light themes of the Readings. Pam, an eloquent speaker, explored the characteristics of salt and its uses to enliven and preserve food. The group believes the readings encourages us to enliven what God is doing in the world; to enliven the Kingdom that is here among us but not fully realized. It was also noted that salt is diluted by water much like we can be diluted by society s values, goals and priorities. Isaiah told us by removing from your midst oppression and false accusation light shall rise in you. We believe we are called to be a light to our community. Jesus does not invite people to be or cajole people into being light. Jesus tells us that we are light. He tells us that we are salt. We are salt and light so we can enliven the world through our deeds and illuminate the Way by our actions. The next Just Scripture meetings are Feb 9 th and Mar 9 th. All are welcome to come, join the group in Breaking Open the Word and share in the community of fellowship. Look for location in the bulletin. Faith & Politics: What does St. Francis have to teach us about politics? House Meeting: Br. Mark Schroeder, OFM will lead us in an exploration of this topic on: Monday March 17 at 6:30 pm in the Fr. Owen room. RSVP to: VIPattheCASA@gmail.com An Intentional Conversation The Casa Valley Interfaith Project Invites you to a House Meeting on Sunday March 9 in Piper Hall after the morning Masses. This meeting is a time to share, in small groups concerns and issues affecting you, your family, and/ or your neighbors. It is essential to hear the stories of what is happening in the lives of community members in order to find commonality and move into action steps. We will meet after each morning mass for 45 minutes in the Serra room.

8 Family Faith Ac vi es Feb. 9 Fi h Sunday of Ordinary Time Jesus tells his followers to let their light shine. By following Jesus new commandment to love one another the disciples bring light into the darkness. Their love and goodness help to change the world. Followers of Jesus are called to spread the light of God s love and make the world a better place. Ask each family member to share what type of good works bring Christ s light into the world. Read Matthew 5:13-16 and discuss: What does Jesus tell his followers about letting their light shine? What happens when people let their light shine in the world? How can Jesus followers give glory to God? Salty Shaker Activity: Take some unsalted crackers and pass out to your family. Have them taste the crackers. Now using a spray bottle, spray some water on the crackers and shake some salt on them. Taste again. Which tastes better? Ask your family to discuss how they might make life better for others just as salt makes our food taste better? Remind them that when we do these things we are Disciples of Christ. You are Sunshine Activity: Draw an outline of a large sun and have your family (or a sun for each individual) draw in ways that you can be the light of Christ. Concluding prayer: Lord, I pray to get salty so my faith won t be faulty, Wherever I go, I ll spread the good news and journey in love, though I wear out my shoes! May I season the earth with friendship and mirth. Amen. First Communion & Confirmation News! Thank you to all the prayer partners praying for our students! This week we are learning about The Liturgy of the Word. Students and parents will explore what the bible and lec onary are all about. Prac cing the mass responses are included, plus a beau ful procession and enthronement of their class bible! Finally each family will write their own prayers of the faithful to be used in the actual Confirma on/eucharist liturgy in May! Keep on praying! Coming up in March next is Eucharist! Celebrate Sacred Time as a Family! More ideas for you to use at home! 1. Start each day with a prayer! Even while they are s ll in bed, at the breakfast table or even on the way to school. Great me to teach tradi onal prayer along with spontaneous prayer. 2. Saint of the Day! Print a Saint of the day and place on your breakfast or dinner table. Chances are that there will be a saint each day that your children can learn about and learn from. 3. Celebrate Ethnic Holidays and Feasts! Especially if it is not your own ethnic tradi on. Wonderful way to learn about the many faces of our universal church and create new tradi ons. 4. Bap sm Bash! Celebrate your child s (and your own) bap sm just as you would a birthday or other special occasion. What a wonderful way to be reminded of our iden ty in Christ and our voca on as disciples. Bring out the candle! Bring out the pictures! Wear white! (Loyola press) (paraphrased from Loyola Press)
