3 November 17, 2013 HOW TO GET TO HEAVEN Last October we had a beautiful celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation here. Bishop Nelson Perez presided and spoke in a very significant way to those who were about to be confirmed and their parents. He told the students among other things that in a certain sense they could be defined by their friends. As the bishop spoke I could hear Sister Bonita (my sixth grade teacher) say: Tell me who your friends are and I ll tell you who you are. She understood very well that the caliber of your friends is pretty much the same as yours. This was all underlined in a similar maxim: Birds of a feather flock together. At the conclusion of the ceremony he told the parents of the very serious obligation they had to make sure that their children assist at Mass on Sundays and holydays of obligation. He didn t mince words but spoke with understanding, compassion and the heart of a father. He was vitally concerned (as I am) that our newly confirmed young men and women be grounded on the Mass and the reception of the Holy Eucharist. These are defining marks of the practice of the Catholic faith. Without them you have very little. Recently a pastor in our Diocese was thinking a lot about this and conducted an informal survey on his own. He made what seems to me to be a remarkable discovery. In his Suffolk County parish about 3% of those who received the Sacrament of Confirmation come back to Sunday Mass. For them, Confirmation is a kind of graduation from Religious Education and from regular church attendance. Often enough, sports is blamed as the culprit. The argument is made that the kids are so involved in athletics that there is no time for Mass. I don t blame sports at all in most Catholic churches there are so many Masses day and night that one can readily attend Mass if he or she really wants to. It all comes down to the essential question of faith. Last Sunday Deacon Joe Scolaro gave an excellent sermon in which he talked about the English Martyrs and how they went to mass at the risk of their lives. These people really believed that attending Mass was actually being present at Calvary and that they truly received the Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. They harbored no doubts or uncertainties. Their faith was a vibrant reality in their lives that colored and influenced all their decisions. In the end they proved their love for Jesus and the Catholic Church by giving up their lives. They completely understood that Jesus Himself had founded the Catholic Church. Moreover, they did not allow the corruption of culture and the collapse of morality all around them to influence their decisions about this life and eternal life. All around us religious values are falling apart. Our religious liberty is threatened and every day what once was thought absolutely immoral is canonized by our society as the new normal. Even many Catholics who were confirmed with the

4 chrism of salvation and have eaten the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ worry little about eternal life and judgment. They have come to the sad conclusion that you can live as you wish and be undisturbed by the practice of the faith. If they still believe in God, they imagine that the road to salvation is an easy street and that almost everybody rolls into heaven no questions asked. Of course, Jesus said just the contrary: Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Matt 7: 13-14) The Heart of God is one of limitless mercy and unending compassion. Pope Francis makes that wonderful point almost on a daily basis. He never ceases to speak of the kindness and generosity of God. There is never any need for discouragement, but there is a need for the realistic appraisal of spiritual realities and the willingness to give ourselves to the Will of the Father Who loves us so much. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 11/11/12 $27,177 11/10/13 $26,774 (-1.40%) PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY COLLECTION 11/11/12 $ 7,702 11/10/13 $ 6,910 (-10.2%) This weekend s second collection is for the Philippines. SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE PHILIPPINES Bishop Murphy is asking to continue our prayers at all Masses this weekend for the people of the Philippines and all those affected by Typhoon Haiyan. We are also united in prayer with our brothers and sisters in the diocese who area waiting word from their families and loved ones form the devastated areas. Bishop Murphy has authorized a special collection to be taken at the Masses this weekend, November 16th/17th, to assist those who are suffering the effects of the typhoon. To allow for timely assistance Bishop Murphy has sent an advance of $50,000 immediately to the Church in the Philippines for relief work.

5 SISTERS OF CHARITY-HALIFAX Last Sunday afternoon I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon given by the Sisters of Charity-Halifax at the Milleridge Inn. This is an annual event at which the Congregation honors various people who exemplify the ideals of the Sisters. This year Father Daniel Murphy, the pastor of St. Saviour s in Park Slope, Brooklyn and Pat Oettinger, a longtime collaborator of the Sisters and Sister Mary Beth Moore, a member of the Congregation, were honored. It was inspiring to hear their works of charity and service and to understand all they had done and are doing for the Church. A good number of St. Aidan s people were there but none was prouder and happier than John Moore, Sister Mary Beth s father. We as a parish are very much in debt to the Sisters of Charity. Over and over again our people tell me how they attended St. Aidan s School and many of these were students of the Sisters and the Franciscan Brothers. These Sisters and Brothers did more than we could ever repay. Father Murphy put it so well when he said that if he lived to be 100, he would never be able to thank the Sisters adequately. He was so right. Incidentally, Sister Mary Beth Moore was a past President of the Sisters of Charity-Halifax no small achievement! 2013 ADVENT We have 3 Advent Candles for memorialization. THE KNIGHT S CORNER (Providing information from the Knights of Columbus) Religious Liberty The Knights of Columbus promotes a robust vision of religious liberty that embraces religion s proper role in both its public and private dimensions. As both Catholics and Americans, we celebrate the essential relationship shared between religion and liberty, a relationship which has uniquely defined our country s identity and has fostered our country s development. Every major achievement that has taken place within the American enterprise the American Revolution; the abolition of slavery; the civil rights movement; reform in education; labor and women s rights has been at the urging of religious people seeking a more just and humane society. In this light, the Knights of Columbus recognizes religious liberty as an indispensable condition for authentic human development. 18 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This week we have arrived at the end of the Year of Faith. It went by so quickly, started last October 2012 and officially ends on November 24th, the Solemnity of Christ the King. The goal of the Year of Faith was, and is, to reawaken the faith in Catholics, so we can be better witnesses to the love of Christ and His Church in our homes, workplaces and communities as Cardinal Wuerl announced last year. He also told us With hearts transformed by Christ and His Gospel, we can change our own lives, and change the world. As the Year of Faith draws to a close, the imperative of renewing and deepening our faith remain. One way to do that is to take steps to partake more often in the Sacraments, recitation of the Holy Rosary, prayers to Our Lady, the Angelus, regular attendance at Mass if possible during the week. In attending Mass we declare ourselves one body in Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the Eucharist is the center of the church s life and is directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ. Our Pope Francis reminds us that because of a rapidly enveloping secularism people don t hear the truth and joy of our beliefs, he stresses the need for us to embrace and learn our faith, fortified by the sacraments and daily prayer we can take up the work of the New Evangelization and share our knowledge with others. He call us to go out and bring Christ s love to those in need and become active in our Parishes. The Pope tells us.lets us ask ourselves what steps we are taking to ensure that faith governs the whole of our existence.i am making this suggestion to you: Let us invoke the Holy Spirit every day, in this way the Holy Spirit will bring us close to Jesus Christ. We have in the kiosks two talks that are very inspirational, Pray Like a Saint by Matthew Leonard, who defines and discusses the three stages of prayer. Prayer is the path to God and Matthew lays out practical steps to achieve union with God, even in the midst of our busy world. Power in Prayer by Sister Mary Gabriel, Novice Director for the Sisters of Life. Sister encourages all of us to rededicate ourselves to growing in relationship with Christ through a life of joyful prayer. Once more I ask you to see the wonderful CDs we have in our kiosks and take as many as you can afford, listen and then give them away! God will shower blessings to all of you that advance His work of Salvation. Toti Conforti SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER The Catholic Church dedicates this month to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Those faithful Christians who have died and gone before us but who still must atone for their sins. The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses them so that they may enter Heaven free from all effects of sin. Praying for the dead, especially those close to us, is an act of charity. Our prayers and sacrifices can be offered up to relieve their suffering. The holy souls are eager for the prayers of the faithful, St. Padre Pio tells us, we must empty Purgatory!! Masses for the deceased shorten their time in purgatory. While we know that the pains of purgatory will end and they would enter in Heaven, charity requires us to pray not only for our loved ones but for those souls who does not have someone to remember them. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.

21 PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Love caritas is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God, Eternal Love and Absolute Truth. Encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, June 29, PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY BAGS OF CLOTHING ON THE BACK STEPS OF THE PARISH SO- CIAL MINISTRY OFFICE! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE ITEMS, PLEASE CONTACT THE PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY OFFICE! FOOD PANTRY: We are trying something new with our food pantry! Each week we will highlight one or two items that the pantry is either very low or out of since many people have inquired as to what is needed. THE ITEMS FOR THIS WEEK ARE: turkey gravy and stuffing! We are also in need of metro cards which we use for our families throughout the year. Thanksgiving: We are collecting turkeys and trimmings for our families for Thanksgiving. Please bring your Thanksgiving donations to the parish social ministry office. SHARING OUR TREASURES: Sharing Our Treasures has become a wonderful charitable tradition here at Saint Aidan s. We begin this program to coincide with the Feast of Christ the King. This feast reminds us that Christ has blessed us with many gifts and treasures and we wish to share our wealth with others less fortunate. This year there will be a Christmas Tree in the vestibule of the church for sharing our treasures. Each of the ornaments placed on the tree will have a request for a specific item. Please return the gifts and gift cards to the rectory or directly to our social ministry office. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY GIFTS IN CHURCH! There are many families, senior citizens and singles who are members of our own parish who have benefitted from the generosity of the many individuals who graciously provided gifts this year. In addition we provided gifts to our Covenant Parish - St. John the Baptist, New Ground, Veteran Groups, Nassau University Hospital Pediatrics and other parishes and charitable organizations. The tree will be decorated during the weekend of November 23 rd. Your love and kindness will make a big difference in the life of another. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. New members are always welcome. At the Anointing Mass on Sunday, November 24 th, there will be members of the prayer shawl ministry giving out blessed prayer shawls. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next meeting will take place on Monday, November 25 th. If you or someone you know would like to have one of these shawls or blankets, please contact our office. If you have any questions, please call Parish Social Ministry (516) x9410. APARTMENT/ROOM We have several parishioners who need of a new place to live! If you know of or have an apartment or room to rent, can you please contact the parish social ministry office at: , ext The Parish Social Ministry Office is open Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM 3:00 PM. Please use the Finamore Parish Center entrance. The only feelings that do not heal are the ones you hide. Henri Nouwen
