3 July 28, 2013 POSITIVE THINKING I m not a great reader of self help books, but occasionally I ll dabble just to see if I can get any new ideas. Recently, I was looking at The Success Principles by Jack Canfield and I came across a quote from Norman Vincent Peale. Dr. Peale was the longtime minister of the Marble Collegiate Church in New York. Some sixty years ago he published a book, The Power of Positive Thinking, which is still selling thousands upon thousands of copies every year. It was a volume of encouragement and attempted to engender hope in those who lacked confidence in themselves. Parenthetically, the book manuscript was rejected by publisher after publisher and Dr. Peale was about to throw it away. His wife, Ruth, prevailed upon him to let her submit it one last time and The Power of Positive Thinking became a phenomenal and perennial best seller. The other day as I was looking through The Success Principles I came across a quote from Dr. Peale. It was given in his last public address when he was 95 years of age. He said this: Shoot for the moon because even if you miss, you ll land among the stars. Admittedly, this was not original with Peale but had been said earlier by one of those he mentored, Les Brown. Similar advice had been given to me in Catholic School by Sister Mary Bonita: Aim for a hundred and you ll at least get a ninety. Strange to say, I have often come across young people whose goals are far too low and have all too little self-confidence. They have convinced themselves that their abilities are far less than what they actually are. From the very outset they undercut themselves and talk themselves into thinking that they are somehow inferior. Some of these same people lack perspective and imagine that study and preparation for a particular career are far too long and not worth the effort. Quite simply, they have sold themselves short. Many times the reason for this is that they just never had the proper encouragement or mentoring. They never ran across the person who could really help them. There are people who really need an infusion of hope. Some of them are young and some are older and there are many in the middle of the spectrum. They all need optimism and a strong dose of Christian hope and enthusiasm. They need to look beyond themselves and realize that with the grace of God they can achieve far more than they ever thought. You can be the means of communicating that to them. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald

13 SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF JULY In these golden days of summer lets learn to slow down, to quiet our mind, to take minute vacations; slow down to look at a flower, to talk to a friend, to read a good book. The perfect place to quiet down is in front of the Blessed Sacrament. In the Lord s presence we can restore our tired mind and drive away our worldly struggles. While we are in His Real Presence pray for vocations to the priesthood, pray for the seminarians, pray for our priests; nothing is more dear to Our Lord than holy men who consecrate daily His Body and Blood. Let us bring the love of our Lord to our neighbors, especially if they are infirm and in need of help. Share your reactions and feedback by calling (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA A group of women were talking about their young family members. Two of them tell how they feel so discouraged. They believe they are losing the battle, and after going through Catholic education, their children are going away from the Church. They are seeking the short-term rewards in the pursuit of pleasures, looking for temporary happiness only to encounter dissatisfaction. Most of those listening to them are going through the same experiences. Young people are not faithful to the Church s teachings and the majority of parents do not know how to deal with this painful problem. How do we preach the Gospel to those living lives structured around sin? How do we actively love them, yet preach the truth at the same time? Somehow we have to realize that in the culture young people are engaged today in a collective adolescence, and we just cannot lecture it into maturity. So we have to be there and let them know we love them! We first have to catechize the Catholics that are engaged with the Church, because so many Catholics are not clear on what the Church teaches, but if we do a good job of teaching the people who claim to be Catholics, they will live differently, and they will set an example for those in the world. Then, and then only, will we win the world over. Our first and most important duty is knowing our Faith well and to be able to impart that knowledge to those around us. Our parish has a wonderful program which will point the way to this plan. The CDs that you find in our kiosks are the best way to learn and to pass on that knowledge to others. This week we have CDs that provide valuable insights and help us better understand our Faith Seven Reasons To Be Catholics by Dr. Peter Kreeft, will help us to understand why truth trumps everything. Seven reasons why every person should indeed be Catholic! Also by Dr. Peter Kreeft, Winning The Culture War is a timely talk. To win any war three things are necessary: Know that you are at war, know who your enemy is, and know what strategies can defeat him. He assures us for those that hope in Christ, victory is assured. Respond to the Holy Spirit s inspiration. Listen to these talks and pass them on to as many people as possible. Nothing is more important! Toti Conforti
