3 September 8, 2013 BROTHER JOHN LAWRENCE DAWSON, OSF Forty years is a long period and for that time and more Brother John Lawrence Dawson of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn has been teaching at St. Anthony s High School, originally in Smithtown and then in South Huntington. He is an accomplished linguist and can speak fluently four or five languages and the number is growing! In addition he is an absolutely fantastic religion teacher. I have visited his classes over the years and can attest to the freshness and vigor of all of his presentations. It doesn t really make any difference what the subject is, he teaches each class with the enthusiasm of a master craftsman. And that is what he is: a master teacher in every sense of the word. He has a tremendous comprehension of the subject and a magnificent understanding of the minds and hearts of his students. He is universally loved and respected. But at the end of October last year in the midst of all our Sandy problems, something very sad happened. Brother suffered a major stroke and since that time has been convalescing at Our lady of Consolation in West Islip and most recently at Maria Regina Convent in Brentwood. It has not been easy for him. The stroke has caused paralysis on one side and his academic teaching has been curtailed temporarily. This has been a tremendous loss to him, his religious community, and his many students. This past Sunday there was a special Mass and celebration for him at the Convent. It was arranged by some of his relatives and friends and was absolutely inspirational. A simple Mass was celebrated by Father Jerry Di Spigno, the pastor of Mary Immaculate in Bellport and a former student of Brother John Lawrence. Father spoke beautifully and sometimes humorously about Brother s work and his apostolate of education. At the end Brother asked me to say a few words. Right after the homily Brother renewed his vows as a Franciscan Brother of Brooklyn. These were received by Brother Richard as the delegate of the Superior General. Afterwards there was a short party in the same room where Mass was celebrated. As you might imagine, I was among the last to leave. There were a number of Franciscan Brothers and I enjoyed talking to the principal, Brother Gary, and Brother Joshua. They, together with all the Brothers at St. Anthony s, do more than you can imagine for the Catholic Church on Long Island. I am writing all of this to enlist your help in a crusade of prayer for the full recovery of Brother John Lawrence. Personally, I am asking St. Anthony of Padua and Archbishop Fulton Sheen to join their prayers to ours to obtain this great favor. Your prayers will make a great difference.

4 At the conclusion of the Mass on Sunday morning I said that while I have had wonderful teachers, I have never seen one as skilled as Brother. He is a tribute to his religious congregation and is yet another example of the fabulous work done by all the religious of our Diocese. We desperately need more of them priests, Brothers and Sisters. You might add that intention to your prayers. Believe me, only in heaven will all the good done by our religious be known. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING FOR PEOPLE OF SYRIA We have all been saddened by the events in Syria and the awful human tragedies that are so much a part of this conflict. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has asked that Saturday, September 7 th, be observed as a Day of Prayer and Fasting for the people of Syria and for a peaceful resolution of this conflict. As your pastor, I ask you to join in these prayers during the coming week so that we all can be united in prayer with our Holy Father. SICK: DECEASED: PLEASE PRAY Barbara Ueland, Christine Schifaudo, Peter F. Brala, Christine Lucivero, Geoffrey Hamilton, Jenny Malewicz, Louis Malewicz, William J. Clark, Cecilia Han, Alexander Muller, Louis Reyes, Kimberly Holmes, Ilidio Correia, Baby Evangeline Kelly Love, Pat Collins Wolfe, James Collins, Elizabeth Coffey, Maureen Apa, Marty Apa, Baby Chase Frank Trivigno, Sophie Rosicki, Carmela Giambalvo, Edgar Haffner, Lawrence Dowd and for all those who have died serving our country. Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift from God! 12 SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER As we enter into the beautiful days of autumn lets reflect on God s call to us to be His children and brothers and sisters to one another. The light of faith illuminates all our relationships and helps us to live them in union with the love of Christ, to live them like Christ. People were created to be loved, things were created to be used the reason why the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used!!witness by your daily life that you live by the truths of your Faith, pray for those who are in need of healing and call or visit a sick friend. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. THE KNIGHT S CORNER (Providing information from the Knights of Columbus) Did You Know - Pope Francis praised the charitable works of the Knights of Columbus and encouraged the organization to defend the sanctity of marriage, the dignity of life, the beauty and truth of human sexuality, and the rights of believers. The pope s sentiments were contained in a letter of greeting to the Knights 131 st annual convention which took place Aug. 6 th 8 th in San Antonio, Texas. The letter expressed the Pope s, esteem for the ideals of faith and fraternity embodied by your Order, its commitment to the Church s mission, and the many works of charity and evangelical witness undertaken by the Knights in their local Councils, parishes and communities. On religious liberty, the letter conveys the pope s appreciation of the clear public witness offered by the Knights of Columbus in protecting the rights and duty of believers to participate responsibly, on the basis of their deepest convictions, in the life of society. 90 th Anniversary Gala Corpus Christi Council # 2502 of the Knights of Columbus will celebrate its 90 th Anniversary with a Dinner-Dance on Saturday, November 9, 2013, from 6:00 11:00 PM. 13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA A little less than a year ago, we entered a Year of Faith, a year dedicated to celebrating and sharing the faith that we all hold as Catholics. In response, parishes and dioceses all over the world have been encouraging Catholics to renew their own faith and to take up the call to a New Evangelization. Although this call sounded intimidating we shall focus on that Evangelization begins at Home. It is an opportunity for each of us to deepen our own faith, to grow closer in our personal relationship with Jesus, to become familiar with the Gospel and to desire to share it. All of these have the power to actually change our lives. In short, as we change we become witnesses that inspire others around us! May we all grow closer to the Lord so that we can become an Evangelizer!! The CDs that we have in our kiosks serve these purposes very well! We keep adding new ones. This week we have a wonderful CD THE MIRACLE OF DIVINE MERCY by Kitty Cleveland. This CD features the Divine Mercy prayer with music written by Kitty, as well as a selection of her other songs and a bonus segment of Kitty s testimony. THE BASEBALL PRIEST by Father Burke Masters. He tells the story of his journey through baseball to Catholicism and eventually to the priesthood. A bonus segment by Mike Sweeney talks of his time in the pros. A CD that your sports fans, your teens, will love!! And a powerful new release THE JESUITS, THE CHURCH & THE PA- PACY a CD about the story of the Jesuits in Church history and speaks specially about Pope Francis. This CD will help us to better understand the significance of Pope Francis election as Pope. Once again, I thank you for your commitment to this mission of evangelization, we need of your generosity to continue it, please, the price of each CD is so small, less than a cup of coffee, and we need it to renew the new tittles to bring to you! May God bless you and all those souls you would touch when you give them away! Toti Conforti
