September 22, 2013 AND THE PREACHING CONTINUES! I want you to go back in time and think about how you first learned the Catholic religion. If you re like me your parents began by teaching you some simple prayers and took you to Mass. In my case the Mass was a wonderful, mysterious event and it absolutely fascinated me. Naturally, I didn t know theology, but I did know that Jesus came at Mass. When I went to St. Savior s in Brooklyn, I quickly learned more and more about the Mass and the vestments and the vessels. And then there was religion class and the famous Baltimore Catechism. By the time you finished the eighth grade, you knew an awful lot about the faith and many other things as well. Your mind and your memory were well trained. Now, if you are younger, you may have attended a Catholic School, but there is a good chance that you were enrolled in a parish religious education program and learned the faith from a dedicated corps of lay people who made it a point to talk to you about Jesus Christ and the Church. Together as a Church, priests, religious and laity made a concerted effort to proclaim the Gospel to as many as possible and that is still going on today in Faith Formation programs. Parenthetically, I urge you to become involved in the apostolate of religious education right here in St. Aidan s.) The history of the Catholic Church in the United States is an educational story in which our bishops early on made education a decided priority. The key to the success of their efforts was the magnificent contribution of religious Sisters. In parish after parish throughout the country schools were built and staffed by various communities. Sisters consecrated themselves to the work of forming Jesus Christ in the minds and hearts of their pupils. They were absolutely tireless and did everything humanly possible to make Christ present in their classrooms and religious education programs. Literally, they sacrificed their entire lives for Christ, the Catholic Church and the work of Christian education. My first pastor, Father Leo Goggin (later Monsignor) was saddened that he didn t have a Catholic school at St. Matthew in Dix Hills. The assistant priest, Father Armshaw (later Monsignor) organized a tremendously effective CCD program for some 3000 students with the help of a very devoted and competent laity. Even then Father Goggin asked the Dominican Sisters of Amityville for some young Sisters to help. They gladly obliged. In a few years a Dominican from another branch (Kentucky) came aboard as the first Director of Religious Education. Father Goggin knew how important the Sisters were. Even now there are two Dominicans, Sister Kay McCarthy and Sister Anthony Therese Roncallo, who work there as pastoral associates.

This Sunday is a very special day in our parish. At the noon Mass we will recognized Sister Mary Pat Neylon, a longtime parishioner here, who has recently become the Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville. She and Sister Laura Helbig have been a wonderful presence in St. Aidan s and in honoring the new Prioress we are honoring all the religious Sisters who have helped to make the Catholic Church such a splendid sign of the love of Christ in our Diocese. We welcome all the Dominicans here with us today and offer our thanks to them and all the Sisters who have done so very much for all of us. Their contribution has been priceless! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald SICK: DECEASED: PLEASE PRAY Barbara Ueland, Christine Schifaudo, Peter F. Brala, Christine Lucivero, Geoffrey Hamilton, Jenny Malewicz, Louis Malewicz, William J. Clark, Cecilia Han, Alexander Muller, Louis Reyes, Kimberly Holmes, Baby Chase, Owen Hogan, Stacy Test, Marianne Cusmano, Yolanda Julius, Baby Scarlet Ann, Linda Colon Florence Gosz and for all those who have died serving our country. The dishonest manager in today s parable knew how to manipulate money to his own advantage. But the Gospel warns that no one can serve both God and money. Which do I serve? Is my stewardship such that anyone can tell? STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 09/16/12 $27,976 09/15/13 $25,562 (+14.92%) RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COLLECTION 09/16/12 $ 4,556 09/15/13 $ 5,241 (+15%) This weekend s second collection is for the St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility. Next weekend s second collection is for the Friends of St. Aidan (FOSA) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish!

WELCOME DEACON JOSEPH SCOLARO This weekend Deacon Joseph Scolaro begins his pastoral ministry here at St. Aidan s. Deacon Scolaro comes from the Parish of St. Dominic in Oyster Bay and is a graduate of Chaminade and the University of Notre Dame. His theological studies were at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington and are being completed at St. Joseph Seminary in Dunwoodie. He was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop Murphy on Sunday, September 1, 2013, at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre. I have known Deacon Joe for a number of years and am overjoyed to have him with us. I might add that I am very grateful to Bishop Murphy for assigning Father Michael and Deacon Scolaro here. They will be a tremendous blessing to us all.

All are invited to attend a Mass of Celebration and Reception For Sister Mary Pat Neylon Who has been Elected Prioress for the Dominican Sisters of Amityville Sunday, September 22, :00 PM Mass Reception Immediately Following Mass Msgr. Kirwin Hall Sister Mary Pat Neylon, who has lived in the convent on Bermingham Place for more than sixteen years celebrated her golden jubilee as a Sister of St. Dominic of Amityville last year. Just imagine fifty years working tirelessly for Christ and the Church as a teacher, administrator, college professor at Molloy and member of the Executive Board of the Dominican Sisters. In addition, she served as the Regional Superior in Brooklyn. She has taught elementary school, high school and college. She has also been involved in the formation of Sisters and has been a very active member of her religious community. That means she goes regularly and consistently to all the meetings and community celebrations. For so many years she has not only done all this, but has also encouraged any number of sisters to pursue their vocation with joy and enthusiasm. Right here in St. Aidan Parish, Sister Mary Pat serves as a lector at Holy Mass and works in the RCIA. (This is a process for people who wish to become Catholics.) To be a religious means to be bound to Christ and the Church by the beautiful vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Religious are a unique sign of the presence of Christ in the world. With humility, dedication and unfailing perseverance they do the work of Christ in our midst. Often enough, all that they do may go unrecognized, but it is known by God. All that they do is for God. They do not look for applause, but seek happiness and satisfaction in working for the salvation of souls. All Dominicans have the letters O.P. after their names. O.P. means Order of Preachers. That is precisely what Sister Mary Pat and all Dominicans do preach the Lord Jesus Christ. Sister has an MA in Speech and Educational Theatre, Post Graduate Studies in Social Work and a Doctorate in Higher Education. She is one accomplished lady. Nevertheless, all this education is for the purpose of the preaching. If you go to the Motherhouse in Amityville, you will find a sign that says Let the Preaching Continue. And that is exactly what she has done. Sister Mary Pat has cried the Gospel with the holiness, joy and splendor of her religious life. In her own words she says: These years were enriched by our generous God by the wonderful people of God, family and friends and by the joys and sorrows encountered in everyday living. A favorite Dominican hymn is Lumen Ecclesiae (Light of the Church.) Actually it refers to St. Dominic, but it applies as well to Sister Mary Pat. Truly she has lit up the Church and brightened and enhanced the lives of so many. Sister Mary Pat, Thank God for you. Sister Mary Pat will be Prioress for 6 years ( ).

Are you or someone you know seeking to complete the sacraments? Do you know someone that wishes to join the Catholic Church? Do you question your Catholic faith at this time in your life? You are invited to a Get Together! Come and explore your needs and hopes in a prayerful way. Ask a friend that might be seeking a faith, a way to get closer to Jesus. Spend an hour with the RCIA Team (Right of Christian Initiation for Adults.) Talk about what you desire at this time of your life, perhaps what Jesus is calling you to. You or your friend will not make any commitments, just coffee and conversation. Reflections from people that have experienced the RCIA Process: I joined the RCIA program at St. Aidan s Church, September 2008 and was Confirmed a Roman Catholic on Easter of For me, it was a rewarding experience every week that I attended the session. The teachers each week brought such committed feelings and strength to each one of us. I so enjoyed attending and looked forward to coming each week. I have met such wonderful people at St. Aidan s. I am forever grateful for the RCIA program and the dedicated teachers who gave of their time so I could enter the Catholic Church. Thank you to all! Love, Meredyth Scesney I felt a strong pull to the Church and was excited to begin the process of becoming a Catholic. I spoke to Monsignor McDonald who arranged for the leader of RCIA, Gloria to get in touch with me. As I soon found out at the first meeting, the RCIA is based on fellowship: here was a group of friendly, outreaching people that made sure that I felt welcomed and was comfortable with them and the process. The Church is a community and RCIA was the introduction to it. The meetings usually centered on Scripture readings. After some reflection and prayer, most times we read the scriptures for the coming Sunday and talked about them in the group. The readings were framed in the context of the events that were occurring at the time of the readings or the theme of the underlying message linking the readings. There were no right or wrong answers in the discussion, just an exploration of how the passages spoke to us individually. I found the prior review of the Scriptures led to a much fuller understanding of the Word when it was read during the Sunday service. We also discussed Church doctrine - what the Church believes and why it believes it. This wasn t presented as a set of rules, but discussed so that understanding how adhering to them helps bring us closer to God and ignoring them puts a barrier between us and God. The discussions around getting closer to God and how to be open to the Holy Spirit were some of my favorites. The group shared techniques and suggestions for prayer and meditation. All of this combined to helping me evolve into someone who has a daily relationship with God and who will use the Church to strengthen my faith and commune with others. I thank all of the RCIA members for teaching me what it means to be Catholic and for helping me to live a life that demonstrates these beliefs. The fellowship they showed me was a fine example to follow. Regards, Homer Culley Welcome to all! When: Tuesday, September, 24 th Where: The Finamore Center (across from the church) Time: 7:30 PM

Friends of Saint Aidan (FOSA) Give the Hope and Dream of a Catholic Education to a Child Friends of Saint Aidan (FOSA) is a fund established with the sole purpose of providing tuition assistance to those families who are not able to pay for Catholic Education at Saint Aidan School only. These are members of our Saint Aidan School family that are being faced with the difficult decision of leaving the school because of a traumatic event (job loss, family problems, etc.) in their lives that makes paying for a Catholic Education impossible. The reason we established FOSA is due to two factors; 1) The Diocese Tomorrow s Hope Fund has been depleted and more families are looking toward it than ever before to help pay for Catholic Education. 2) We can no longer pass the burden on to the other families in the school. Perhaps you might consider a donation as a memorial to a loved one. At a time of loss many families inquire about memorial donations to our school and our parish. This is a wonderful opportunity to memorialize a loved one. We have memorial cards that are sent to the families of the person for whom the memorial has been purchased acknowledging the gift. The funds we raise will only go to those families in need as determined by the Pastor and Principal. Next weekend s second collection is for FOSA (September 28th/29th). Additional donations envelopes are available in the church and in the rectory office. For information please call Lynn Przeniczny at (516) x9104. If you can t feed a hundred people, than feed just one Mother Theresa Why not sponsor a student in St. Aidan School. Make a difference! Make the hope and dream of Catholic Education a reality! Make a donation. Thank you and God Bless!

Prayer and Witness in the Public Square Rosary Rally For Religious Liberty & the Preservation of Catholic Healthcare The way of the Lord may be difficult to discern in Catholic health care today, but the obligation the need to find him and to build for, with, and through him, remains stronger than ever. Pope Francis concluded his first homily as the Bishop of Rome by invoking the Holy Spirit to grant the entire Church a fundamental grace, which is essential to the mission and identity of Catholic health care in particular: to walk, to build, to profess Jesus Christ crucified. John A. Di Camillo, Be.L. As of Jan.1, 2014, the HHS (Health and Human Services) Mandate imposes crushing fines on Catholic hospitals if they do not provide health insurance which covers products and services in direct violation of church teachings. Join us to pray the rosary for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin in preserving freedom of conscience and protecting Catholic healthcare. Also, hear speakers with the latest news on the imminent threat to Catholic Healthcare. Saturday, October 5th from 10:00-11:30 AM at Good Samaritan Hospital, 1000 Montauk Hwy; West Islip. 13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This week, here in the Parish, we started a Scriptural Study on Angels, the messengers of God which are all around us. It is so interesting how God created these spiritual beings to be our guides and guardians, helpers and teachers. Angels are personal beings, although invisible, each angel is an individual person created by God, and as persons, angels have intelligence and free will! Both the New and the Old Testament carry scriptural stories that involve angels. Every Sunday, at Mass, we mention their existence many times; in the Creed we profess our faith in God who created all things visible and invisible. We confess our sins all the angels and saints. We sing hymns about angels Holy God, We Praise Your Name, On Eagle s Wings. Hymns that we have learned from Angels: The Gloria and the Sanctus. Angels were made immortal (that is never to die), human race suffers death, and as we read in Psalm 8: 4, 5, we are made a little lower than the angels. Pray to these spiritual beings, since they bear God s messages to us and carry our petitions. If you want to know more about these awesome spiritual beings, every Tuesday morning and or evening, you could join the Scriptural Study. This week we have new CDs: a new one by Matthew Kelly, The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic. In this talk he answers the question of why we find highly engaged Catholics and others massively disengaged, and why? If we want to invigorate parish life, we must first discover the answer to what drives Catholics to one way or the other. Detox by Jason Evert, is a CD suitable to share about the reality and dangers of pornography, and it deals with adult content. Evert discusses the strategies necessary to win the war against this vice. No Imitations by Chris Stefanick discusses chastity beyond the usual just say NO and offer something to say YES to: health, happiness, authentic relationships, and love. Everything else is just an Imitation! Perfect talk for young people. Pass it on to your children and family!! Thank you again for your help to this ministry, it is an important part of the Church s plan to evangelize, and your generosity to pay for the CDs enable us to bring more new titles. May God bless you! Toti Conforti SPIRITUALITY FOR SINGLES The monthly Singles Gathering will be held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 8:30 PM in the Upper School Cafeteria.
