1 FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT Order of Worship March 10, :00 am Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) 3014 McKinley St NE, Minneapolis, MN website: 1

2 Welcome to God s House today!!! A special welcome to visitors and guests; we are pleased that you have joined us today! If you have no church family, and if we can be of any help to you, please speak with the pastor after the service. We pray you will feel God s love for you and be empowered to live as God s child this week. Today s Focus Jesus Christ Is Our Champion Against the Devil Jesus Christ, our champion against the devil, endures and overcomes every temptation (Luke 4:13) on our behalf. He worships the Lord, His God, and serves Him only by trusting the Word of His Father: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased (Luke 3:22). Jesus victory is now ours through His gracious Word, which is not far away but near us in our mouth and in our heart, in the proclamation of repentance and faith. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved (Rom. 10:10). Our confession of Christ includes the prayer of faith, which is not disappointed, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Rom. 10:13). The Lord is not oblivious to our affliction, our toil, and our oppression (Deut. 26:7), but has mercy upon us. He has brought us out of bondage through the signs and wonders of Holy Baptism, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm (Deut. 26:8), and now He leads us by His Spirit even in the wilderness. Children are welcome in worship! If childcare is needed, an unattended nursery is open during worship services. It is located across from the restrooms next to the Church Offices. Is there something you d like us to pray for today? Prayer Request cards are in each pew. Please hand your request to an usher before the service or during the offering. They will give them to the pastor to include in the prayers for today. The Lord s Supper is celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. We joyfully share our conviction that this is The Lord's Table. We receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, together with the bread and wine in a manner our human reason cannot understand. (Real Presence) By communing together with our Lord: - we express the belief that Jesus is the Son of God and Son of Man; - that Jesus is our Savior and only way for salvation; - that Jesus offers us His Body and Blood in a mysterious yet real way; - that Christ's sacrificial death grants the forgiveness of our sins; - and that God is strengthening us in this Sacrament to live a more godly; life and to amend with the help of the Holy Spirit, those areas not in conformity with God s will. We declare these statements because it is our concern for people to not be hypocritical between their faith and celebrate the blessings of God's Table at the Altar. Persons unable to approach the Altar may be communed in the pew, please notify the Pastor or Elder if you wish this service. The white wine is denatured (alcohol removed) 2

3 FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT WORDS OF PREPARATION Satan tempted Jesus repeatedly with the words, "If You are the Son of God..." Even now, Satan deceptively questions our own identity as God's precious sons and daughters, claimed by God in baptism. But as Jesus resisted temptation, rebuking Satan with God's powerful Word, so must we. With this in mind, we begin this Lenten season, a time of struggle and testing, a time in which we remember our baptismal covenant, Christ's passion, and ultimately His resurrection victory. 4 TODAY S LUTHERAN HOUR March 10 "Through Another's Eyes" (John 9:1-41) Speaker: Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler Art helps us to better see the world. John's Gospel, which is both history and art, puts the world in proper focus NEXT WEEK ON THE LUTHERAN HOUR March 17 "Ba-a-ah" (John 10) Speaker: Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler Strikingly, Jesus refers to his people both as "sheep" and as "gods" (Psalm 82). How does that work? On Sunday mornings, listen on 830 AM WCCO AM at 6:05 am, or 1110 AM, Omaha, at 6:30 am, or XM 170 Satellite Radio on Sundays at noon or listen anytime at STEWARDSHIP: March 10: Lent 1 Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered him, It is written Isn t it interesting that Jesus does not defeat Satan with His power as God but rather by His perfect obedience in His perfect humanity? Jesus defeats Satan not by miracles but by quoting the Scriptures and living according to it. This should cause us great joy for two reasons. First, because we see Jesus win the victory for us. Second, because here Jesus shows us how to stand in that victory on the Word of God alone. Let us build our lives on the sure rock of this Word! LUTHERANS FOR LIFE: March 10 People with disabilities and their families have much to offer the Body of Christ, but often the Church sees them as needy as a mercy ministry not as valued contributing members. Look for ways for each of them to serve, including the person with disability. Mona Fuerstenau, Bethesda Lutheran Communities ANNUAL SPRING KITCHEN/FELLOWSHIP HALL CLEANING Our kitchen and our tables/chairs need their yearly cleaning. 7 WORSHIP SCHEDULE FOR LENT Midweek Series: The God Given Senses Even today, we encounter God and God s salvation in embodied ways -- in our bodies abilities to perceive familiar realities and to interpret new ones. Lent provides opportunities to acknowledge this. The season begins with smelly and greasy ash as a stark liturgical reminder of our flesh s dusty finitude. It will end with our feet washed in cool water or a bittersweet taste of wine in our mouths as we imagine the horrible sight of a man s body mangled on a cross. In between, Lent allows us to consider together who we are and how we encounter an incarnate God. 9 Catechesis Note for the Week "What is the meaning of Lent?" Lent is a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial observed by Christians. It begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. The length of the Lenten fast was established in the 4th century as 46 days (40 days, not counting Sundays). During Lent, participants eat sparingly or give up a particular food or habit. It is six weeks of self-discipline. Lent began as a way for Christians to remind themselves of the value of repentance. The austerity of the Lenten season was seen as similar to how people in the Old Testament fasted and repented in sackcloth and ashes (Esther 4:1-3; Jeremiah 6:26; Daniel 9:3). Many Christians believe that giving something up for Lent is a way to attain God s blessing. But the Bible teaches that grace cannot be earned; grace is the gift of righteousness (Romans 5:17). Also, Jesus taught that fasting should be done discreetly: When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen (Matthew 6:16-18) If a Christian wishes to observe Lent, he or she is free to do so. The key is to focus on repenting of sin and consecrating oneself to God. Lent should not be a time of boasting of one s sacrifice or trying to earn God's favor or increasing His love. God s love for us could not be any greater than it already is. Thinking about God is what Lent s about. Lent doesn t always mean forbidding ourselves some pleasure. It can be an opportunity to seek the pleasure of God s presence. While fasting can be a good thing, and God is pleased when we repent of sinful habits. There s absolutely nothing wrong with setting aside some time to focus on Jesus' death and resurrection. However, repenting of sin is something we should be doing every day of the year, not just for the 46 days of Lent. 9

10 Today s Scripture Readings Deuteronomy 26:1-11: The first fruit offerings of the Children of Israel were given to the Lord in thanksgiving for His having redeemed them from slavery in Egypt. These offerings did not earn God s favor, but were part of their confession of faith that the Lord had kept His promise of grace to them. In the same way, we give our offerings in thankfulness for our salvation in Christ a salvation that we could not earn, but which He freely gave to us. Romans 10:8b-13: By the Word of God we are called to faith and by the Word of God we call upon the Lord for salvation. It is the Word of the Gospel that has been preached and believed that is in our hearts and upon our lips. It is the Word of the Gospel alone that gives us the certainty of our salvation and the assurance that we belong to Christ. Luke 4:1-13: The temptation of Our Lord is the traditionally appointed Gospel reading for the First Sunday in Lent. This year we hear the account from the evangelist Luke. The 40 day period of the Lenten preparation for Easter are based upon this 40 day period in which Jesus fasted, prayed, and was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. We learn from Jesus that God s Word alone is the strength of our faith in the struggle against Satan because in God s Word we receive the very Savior Himself who was victorious in His battle against Satan for us. During Lent we too follow the pattern of our Savior, denying ourselves, crying out to God in fervent prayer, and depending upon God s sure and certain promises of deliverance. Next Week s Readings 2nd Sunday in Lent Jeremiah 26:8-15; Psalm 4; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 13:
