2 Thanksgiving! By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation It has pleased Almighty God to prolong our national life another year, defending us with His guardian care against unfriendly designs from abroad and vouchsafing to us in His mercy many and signal victories over the enemy, who is of our own household. It has also pleased our Heavenly Father to favor as well our citizens in their homes as our soldiers in their camps and our sailors on the rivers and seas with unusual health. He has largely augmented our free population by emancipation and by immigration, while He has opened to us new sources of wealth and has crowned the labor of our workingmen in every department of industry with abundant rewards. Moreover, He has been pleased to animate and inspire our minds and hearts with fortitude, courage, and resolution sufficient for the great trial of civil war into which we have been brought by our adherence as a nation to the cause of freedom and humanity, and to afford to us reasonable hopes of an ultimate and happy deliverance from all our dangers and afflictions: Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe. And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the city of Washington, this 20th day of October, A.D. 1864, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty-ninth. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. By the President: WILLIAM H. SEWARD, Secretary of State. ~~~~~ I have been fond of Lincoln s Thanksgiving Day Proclamation for many years, sometimes using it as part of a Thanksgiving service. Recognizing that the original was probably drafted by William Seward, I especially appreciate the idea that [God] has been pleased to animate and inspire our minds and hearts with fortitude, courage, and resolution While civil and religious wars continue to plague our world, I am grateful that the people of AHLC have been animated and inspired in mind and spirit for the cause of freedom and humanity. Moreover, the Almighty continues to afford to us reasonable hopes of an ultimate and happy deliverance of ourselves and our neighbors from fear, racism, poverty, and any injustice. For that I give thanks and ask that we continue to grow into those hopes shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors. May our Thanksgiving tables abound with such gratitude and hope! Pastor Roger 2

3 God Never Blinks Please read Genesis 45: 1 3 and 50: One of the reasons for blinking is adjusting our eyes to a bright light. God probably doesn t have to blink for that purpose. What are other reasons for blinking? GOD NEVER BLINKS is the title of a book by Regina Brett, a columnist for the Cleveland, Ohio, Plain Dealer. The book contains 50 of her columns, which she refers to as Lessons. The title of the book is also the title of Lesson 15 (pages 70 73). According to Ms. Brett s comments is it good that God never blinks, or would we prefer that he occasionally did? The reader is challenged to read pages 57 through 59 without shedding tears. Two of the Lessons, 7 and 12, contain the word cry in their titles. On page 33, in Lesson 7, Ms Brett states All my life I ve been a crier. She quotes (on page 36) Saint Ignatius list of gifts that his tendency to cry has brought him: humility, intimacy with God, greater devotion, peace and strength. Can you quote the verse in which Jesus cried? Can you find it? There are concordances on the book cart for locating Bible verses. Many online Bibles have features for searching for verses. Do you remember the context that resulted in Jesus tears? Did he cry in private or publically? A Post-It note is attached to page 36 giving the passage. The verses from chapters 45 and 50 of Genesis contain incidents in which tears were shed. If the causes of those tears were neither pain nor sorrow, what was their cause? This book is filled with practical advice. Lesson 1, Life Isn t Fair, but It s Still Good (pages 7 9) includes quotation by Patrick, an acquaintance of Ms. Brett. He is a get to person. He doesn t have to go to work, he gets to go. He doesn t have to shop for food, he gets to. He doesn t have to take his son to baseball practice, he gets to. Lesson 1 includes descriptions of how that attitude resulted in effective coping with unfair situations. Are there actions that you get to do instead of have to do? The title of Lesson 29 is What Other People Think of You Is None of Your Business (pages ). On page 135 Ms. Brett states the secret to freedom from gossip, judgment, criticism and other negative opinions can be expressed in is one word. What do you think it is? Do you need a suggestion for a gift for one of the milestone birthdays, especially a 50th or 60th birthday? A clever idea is described on pages That gift takes weeks to prepare so start early. This suggestion is included in Lesson 32, which has the lengthy title: Your Job Won t Take Care of You When You Are Sick, but Your Friends Will. Stay in Touch with Them. The title of Lesson 40 is: We All Put Our Problems in a Pile and Got a Look at Everyone Else s, We d Want to Keep Our Own. Ms. Brett provides anecdotes in pages to support this outrageous statement. She quotes a familiar passage from Isaiah to support the belief that each of us is unique, that God created just one of each of us. Can you quote that passage, Can you find it? A Post-It note is attached to page 187 that states the location of that verse. More newspaper columns by Ms. Brett can be found by googling Regina Brett and choosing the website of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. A copy of the book GOD NEVER BLINKS is on the book cart in the gathering area. Please return materials that you take with you as soon as you have finished with them. Others might be waiting for them. Thanks Clair

10 FIRST DAY A lot going on in a small space was my first thought when the Alley Shoppe opened that morning. People were flooding in and things started to move extremely fast. It was amazing to see how everyone left the team meeting and knew exactly where to go and what to do, and how to do it exceptionally well. Everyone was in control of their situations and people were moving swiftly. I was surprised at how many people knew little to no English. Having to communicate with mostly pointing and gestures was a new experience. The best part was struggling to find something for someone who wasn't sure what I was saying because when we were finally on the same page, there was a light in their eyes. I knew that I was doing something good and this was the beginning of a very special semester. Sure, it's a lot going on in a small space, but that's exactly it. A lot of people are getting what they need, a lot of people are eating a meal, a lot of people are doing service, and a lot of people are bettering their lives in a small, yet big, space. Lula Hussein (Intern from St. Kate s) Lula will be working with the Alley Shoppe until December. Lula s a senior at St. Kate s with a major in Social Work and plans on graduating in June. FINANCIAL UPDATE 2014 Monthly budget amount needed = $36, Month Amount Monthly Monthly Net Year-to-Date 2014 Received Expenses (Shortage) Net (Shortage) Sept $27, $34, ($6,568.37) ($64,060.74) October $16, $26, ($9,642.24) as of 10/15/2014 Thank you for your continued support to the ministry and mission of Arlington Hills Lutheran Church.
