August 2013 ISSUE 8 LXV111 State Fair Fundraiser Once again, our brothers and sisters from Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church have invited us to help staff their State Fair Parking fundraiser. If we can enlist four volunteers for each of the 12 days of the Fair, G.A. will contribute $1000 to our congregation! Volunteers will help guide the parking and direct fair-goers to the bus stop from 12:00 p.m. -4:00 p.m. OR 4:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. depending on the days. Would you be willing to sign up for a few days with a group of friends from church, family, or neighbors? We think it would be a nice way to get to know other church members or to catch up with family and friends. Sign up is in the church office. Steve Johnson ANNUAL CHURCH PICNIC at the Phalen Park Pavilion. Lunch will be served at 11:30, following the worship service. Bring a salad or dessert to share. Meat, corn on the cob, and beverages provided. Hope to see everyone there!
Page 2 Issue 8 Volume LXVIII A TOWN WITHOUT CHURCHES? Pr. Sarah Semmler Smith in the Metro Lutheran (July 3, 2013) asks, Can we imagine a town without a church? I ve traveled through most of the towns in SW Minnesota and many of the towns in upstate New York, and I d have to say that nearly every one of those towns has a church. So it is hard to imagine, but wait. That question does sound familiar, doesn t it? Can you imagine a town without a church? That sounds a bit like me describing our vision at an Imagine the Possibilities Campaign lunch. Many of you have heard me describe the Payne-Maryland Project as a community center that has no dedicated space for a sanctuary, Sunday school rooms, nursery, fellowship hall or chapel: spaces we normally associate with a church building and activities. Those spaces will be available for our use when we need them, but we will lease them and share them, not own them and maintain them. Of course, I had to read on! As it happens, Pr. Smith can imagine a town without a church, because she reads the Bible. When I read Revelation, that seems to be exactly what the author is doing. After 20 or so chapters of judgment, with too many monsters and metaphors to count, the New Jerusalem is envisioned descending to earth, the embodiment of God s healing and hope for creation. The ruler of the city is this ironic Lamb, and New Jerusalem is perfect in structure and provision with its golden gates and river of life, fruit trees that never stop producing. All things are being made new in the New Jerusalem but, unlike what we read in Ezekiel, in this city there is no temple. This has always struck me like Uptown in Minneapolis without a coffee shop or Green Bay without Lambeau Field. You would think, in God s city there would be a house of God, right? Yet in this New Jerusalem, there is no temple. In John s vision of God s dream for the world, there is no church! How many times have I preached on the New Jerusalem text and not thought of it as describing a town without a church? Many times in the past, but never again! I especially appreciated Pr. Smith s practical application to doing church in today s world. the challenge could be to get out of the shadow of our buildings, to unhinge ourselves from quarter million dollar mortgages and creatively decline the job of keeping up historic real estate. The point of the church has never been to be church for its own sake. The point, as I understand it, is to make manifest the reign of God not inside a brick building, but out there to those who do mourn and cry and are in pain and who don t know this Jesus. In the New Jerusalem there is no church because the whole city is the holy of holies, where the divine presence is directly, intimately available God with us, radically among us, through us. You know that I can only say Amen! Where is the church in the Payne-Maryland Project? The whole project is the church! Let us work together to create a community center where the love of God s people can work like leaven within the busy cross-roads of this neighborhood: a place where the Holy Spirit can more effectively give rise to the rule of God in the lives of all our neighbors. Pr. Roger
Page 3 Issue 8 Volume LXVIII Book Nook News By Clair Haberman 100 Ideas that Changed the World Please read Deuteronomy 12: 2-7: Joshua 24: and Matthew 22: IDEAS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD is the title of a book published by Time Books and available on the book cart. The ideas are arranged chronologically beginning with the Ancient World, followed by The Middle Ages, The Renaissance, The Age of Enlightenment and concluding with Modern Times. About 200 words, utilizing a half page, are devoted to each idea. Most of the explanations are accompanied by an illustration. The first idea is "Prehistoric Man Imagines a World Inhabited by Spirits" (page10). Anthropologists have uncovered (literarily) evidence that prehistoric cultures believed that they could communicate with spirits that controlled their lives. Over long periods of time these beliefs became polytheistic religions. According to Bible commentaries the book of Joshua was written during the 5th or 6th century BC about events that occurred approximately eight centuries earlier. The passage from the 24th chapter of Joshua refers to gods. Apparently those people were still under the impression that there were spirits that controlled their lives and which could be appeased. The second idea is "A Multitude of Gods Give Way to One God Almighty". This did not occur at a particular moment. When you read pages 10 and 11 you'll learn about a person (possibly the first person) who created a religion that worshiped one god. Does the quotation from Deuteronomy refer to an event in the growth of monotheism? The third idea (page 12) continues the development of beliefs about God with a description of geometry, including the statement "God is a geometer." The fourth idea is "Mankind Envisions Life After Death" (page 13). That is an important idea in Christianity. Would you have expected that idea to have originated as a Christian belief? Some information about its source is included in this article. There are several ideas from the fourth through the forty third that refer to religion. As you encounter them try to determine if there is a trend toward increasing sophistication of religious beliefs. Idea forty three is "The Power of Kings Originates From God" (page 63). This is usually called The Divine Right of Kings. Did that idea originate from the meditations of a theologian? Does the passage from Matthew support that idea? The title of Pastor Allmendinger's sermon on July 7, 2013 was Peace and Wealth. He began by citing statistics about the world's population and the world's wealth which can be summarized by stating: "A small number of people own a large part of the wealth". The unfairness of that allocation and methods of correcting it are the subjects of these ideas mentioned in 100 IDEAS: "Capitalism" (pages 76 and 77), "Laborers Unite for Better Pay and Working Conditions" (page 89), "Marx and Engels Analyze the Capitalist System" (page 92) and "Keynesian Economics" (page 113). A CD of the 8:30 am worship service which includes the sermon, is available in the church office. Please return materials when you have finished reading them so they are available for others. Clair
Page 4 Issue 8 Volume LXVIII Good News! This story was featured on KSTP and occurred in our parking lot! St. Paul Woman Spreads Flavor of Kindness this 4th of July The average cost of a picnic this Fourth of July is $5.72 per person, but to some that meal is priceless. This holiday, Helen Green of St. Paul, spread a flavor of kindness by hosting a barbecue for veterans and the homeless. "Society is not a bad place. It really isn't. It's what you make it. You live, you be strong, and you just have to have love in your heart," Green said. For nearly 20 years, Green has lived in a home built by Habitat for Humanity."It went up in 18 days. People from all around the world came there to build that home and it was such a wonderful site to see. And I'll never forget that day. Ever," Green said. The idea to have a community barbecue this holiday started in her garage. "My 17- year-old Donell, was like 'Mom, you know, lets do something different,'" Green said. Green spent what she could. Her neighbors and even strangers chipped in. There were hundreds of brats, burgers, ribs and chicken, enough food for 200 people. Volunteers helped cook the food which Green prepared with her own recipes. This way here at least I know I was a part of giving somebody a smile," said volunteer Pat Kieffer while grilling a slab of ribs. Green has three children and now works as a painter. She hopes her kindness this holiday means more than a meal to those in need. "This is one of the most precious things you can do for somebody in this world that needs it the most," said Stephanie Williams of St. Paul at Thursday's barbecue. "People like these people that came here to help today, it's what makes me even stronger, it makes me know that you are doing the right thing. No matter what the outcome is. This is the right thing that I was supposed to do. I was supposed to do this today," Green said. Green hopes to host an even larger Fourth of July barbecue next year. Helen Green will again be spreading a flavor of kindness in our parking lot. Helen is a neighborhood resident that is interested in giving back to the community. When her original venue fell through for her July 4 th BBQ Arlington Hills said YES to her request to use our parking lot for the event. She felt that it was so successful that she did not want to wait another year to host another event. So on Labor Day AHLC and Helen will be having a parking lot BBQ complete with food, fun and games. Please join us in the parking lot on Sept. 2 beginning at 1:00.

We know that many families are unable to provide the tools that kids need to start the year off on the right foot. Supplies can be dropped off anytime in the church office. Things we need: Color crayons notebooks folders glue sticks, pencils/pens, markers and colored pencils. Offering a prayer for the children as you purchase the supplies is another wonderful way to support them as they begin their school year.
