REFLECTIONS FROM WILSON HOUSE Advent and Christmas 2014 What is Advent? Society tends to understand a little of the true meaning of Christmas but virtually nothing about Advent. The danger as Christians is that we can end up doing the same. In our rush to get to the manger, we are tempted to downplay or ignore the Advent themes that the church has long believed are necessary so that we can come to the cradle in the right way. Advent means Coming. The Advent season includes the 4 Sundays leading up to Christmas morning. During these 4 weeks candles are lit to remind us of God s promise to send Jesus, the light of the world. A fifth candle is lit on Christmas morning to remind us of the wonderful day of Jesus birth- God taking on human flesh and living among us. As well as these things, traditionally Advent has also been a time to focus on another promise of God- the promise that His Son Jesus Christ will come to earth from heaven a Second time as the King and Judge of all the earth. Therefore advent is a time for us to reflect on the truth that Jesus is coming back and to ask ourselves questions like- If He came today would I be ready? and How can I be ready for Jesus Second coming? 2 nd Sunday in Advent Traditionally on the second Sunday of Advent the church will remember John the Baptist, the man who came to get everybody ready for the first coming of Jesus. John was a preacher. His message was simple but unpopular. He told people, God s King is coming, you need to get ready- you need to repent (change your attitude towards God and change your lifestyle in light of that). Why does the church do this? The most important reason Jesus came to earth was to die on the cross to take the judgement that we deserve for all the wrong things we say and think and do and because we often live without any reference to God (Sin). By listening to John the Baptist and by reflecting on our own sin, we will appreciate more fully why Jesus came to earth and died. We will also be more prepared to meet Him if He should come back in our lifetime or when our earthly life comes to an end. 3 rd and 4 th Sundays in Advent Traditionally the Third and Fourth Sundays of Advent focus on the unfolding story of God s promise to send Jesus being fulfilled in the lives of the characters in the Christmas story. This might be the angel visiting Mary and telling her she will become pregnant with the Christ child. It might be the angel coming to Joseph and telling him the same story! It might be the angel appearing to Simeon and

telling him that his wife will give birth to a boy called John who will prepare the way for Jesus- the great King who will come to rescue people from their sin. Why does the church do this? It is only as we reflect on these themes (Jesus Christ is coming again to judge the earth, we need to repent in order to be ready, Jesus came to die to take the judgement for our sin so that we can be God s friends) that we can celebrate Christmas in the right way. If we have understood these things and if as a result we have cried out to Jesus to rescue us from our sins we will be able to sing Joy to the world the Lord has come! with real meaning, real hope and real joy. That is my hope and prayer for us all this Christmas! What will Advent and Christmas look like in Fisherwick? Over the next 3 Sunday mornings we will be reflecting on these Advent themes in our services. We will also be creating a few opportunities where we can share this great news with our family and friends who perhaps haven t yet fully grasped these things. On the 7 th December we will be hosting the Marie Curie carol service at 3pm. On the 14 th December our children and young people will lead us in a special all-age Advent service about Mary. On the 21 st December we will be having a special all-age Christingle service where we ll all get to make a Christmas decoration, which reminds us of the good news about Jesus. On Sunday evenings we will be thinking about the Songs of Christmas that we find in the bible. On the evening of the 14th December there will be an SNL Christmas special. On the evening of the 21 st December Neale and the Choir will be leading us in our Festival of Carols and Lessons. On Christmas Eve there will be opportunity to celebrate a midnight communion. All of this will climax on Christmas morning when we celebrate the birth of our Saviour in a short all- age service starting at 10.00am. On the 28 th December Seth will be preaching on the theme of looking back and looking forward. On January 4 th, as we begin 2015 and think about our New Year s Resolutions we will begin two New Series. In the mornings we will be doing a series called, Back to Basics in which we will examine various topics including, What is a Christian? How can I be sure? What is a Quiet time? How can I read the bible for all its worth? Why can the Christian life be tough? How does God guide us? In the evenings we will be working our way through one of the most significant letters ever written in human history- Paul s letter to the Romans. Let me encourage you to pray for friends and family and to invite them to join you at one of these special services over the Christmas period. Thank You and Happy Christmas! May I also take this opportunity to thank you all for helping Emma, Erin, Patrick, Conor and myself to settle in and for your warm and friendly welcome. Thank you all sincerely for your commitment to our Sunday services, your prayers and encouragement, and your active participation in all the different aspects of church life. It is a joy for me to have such a willing band of colleagues, each playing their

own part in enabling church life to function happily and effectively. I look forward in anticipation to see what God will do through us as we work together. I hope you all have a very, very happy Christmas. Rev Michael Congratulations to Robert and Diana Carson who are celebrating 50 years of marriage

Pray for each volunteer who will give up time and energy to collect, sort and pack the food for the hampers. May they find their service joyful and be blessed by it. Pray for Michelle as she speaks at the Girls Brigade Enrolment in Ballyclare on 14 December. Part of her role is to form relationships with the parents who wait

in the Crosslink area while their daughters are at GB. Many of them are not believers, so please pray that they will be convicted of their need for Christ and will have the confidence to chat to Michelle about it. MISSION OVERSEAS From MISSION OVERSEAS PRAYERLINE WORLD DEVELOPMENT Seeking justice, showing compassion: the Board of Mission Overseas, through its World Development Committee (WDC), enables PCI to share in God s creative and just purposes for all human communities, in the building of justice and the active practice of compassion for all God has made, to the end that all peoples might know their fullness of life which is in Christ Jesus. WDC plans, promotes and oversees the annual World Development Appeal which funds development projects through PCI s partners, Christian Aid and Tearfund. The 2014 Appeal Building Hope focuses on new models for the reconstruction of communities in the wake of climate disaster, political upheaval, and continuing economic poverty. The highlighted projects are in Haiti (rebuilding whole communities after the earthquake and Burma / Myanmar (creating new structures of inclusion for people with disabilities). Give thanks for generous giving to the World Development Appeal and pray that this would continue. Pray for PCI s partners, Christian Aid and Tearfund as they support local development projects amongst the poor and most vulnerable. ROMANIA Csaba and Ilona Veres report that the first of IKE s Waiting for the Lord advent festivals of 2014 has taken place in Udvarhely. Over 200 young people came together to worship and listen to teaching on spiritual preparation for celebrating the birth of our Lord and Saviour. During the Advent period the Diakonia Mission in Mera where Ilona works, is holding a Bible club every Friday for the children. Out of their 45 children, only a few attend church and Sunday school, so most have little Bible knowledge or spiritual input outside of the Diakonia. The teaching at Bible club will be on the theme Following Jesus, and staff hope to challenge the children with clear teaching and a time of open prayer. The Veres family are due to arrive in Ireland later this month for Christmas. Csaba and the girls are due to return to Romania at the beginning of January, with Ilona staying on in Ireland for a few weeks to undertake deputation in January. Give thanks for the first Waiting for the Lord worship event and pray for the other three yet to come: 6th December in Cluj; 13th December in Ordongozosfuzes; and 20th December in Sepsiszentgyorgy.

Pray that young people to attend the events will be challenged to seek the Lord during this advent season and be inspired by the worship from the bands. Pray that many of the children attending the Bible club in Mera will be challenged to repent and follow Christ. Pray that the Veres family will have a safe and trouble-free journey to Ireland. Remember the girls as they finish their half-term exams in the next two weeks. KENYA Stephen Cowan writes, It is now December and the circumcision time has come round again throughout Kenya. The government has issued a press statement publicly calling FGM a vice. There is a desire to protect the girls. Sadly some of the girls here in Samburu are keen to be circumcised. Singing filled the air at the end of last week as a secondary school girl had her ceremony. The December youth camps are due to begin on 8th December. A team from Eldoret Polytech will lead the camp again, assisted by two graduate volunteers who are based in Baragoi this year. Pray for all the young people coming in from the villages. Pray that the message of the Gospel and the need to repent and turn to the Lord will be clear. Pray that traditional ceremonies will not prevent any young people attending the camps. Continue to pray for the ongoing construction of the girls dormitory at Seren. This week a team of young people and some builders are working there hoping to get the building to ring beam height, before senior youth camp begins. The Leremore family have all been unwell over the past couple of weeks and would value prayer for complete healing. Remember Thomas especially as he recuperates following a short stay in hospital. Pray they will be able to take time off to rest over the holiday period. MALAWI Neil Kennedy reports that a key member of the Blantyre One-Stop Centre team has resigned to move to a much better paid job. The Ministry of Health has notoriously low pay rates, which results in a constant threat to the team. Pray for a suitable replacement to be found quickly. Pray for wisdom for one of the Christian trainees who has a difficult career choice to make. Volker and JinHyeog Glissmann share prayer topics for the ministry of Theological Education by Extension in Malawi (TEEM). Following the conference in Ethiopia, plans for a regional meeting of Southern African TEE programmes are taking shape. The different TEE

programmes across Africa share an educational approach to theological education, but otherwise are completely independent from each other. So far, the ongoing conversations have already helped to sharpen joint thinking about important issues affecting TEEM s programmes. Give thanks to God for these unexpected and very positive developments. Pray for a number of TEEM staff who are undertaking examinations for courses that will help them in their professional development. Give thanks for the coming school holidays and for all who pray for Lina s commute to school in Blantyre. This month, Diane Cusick will be writing project proposals as they look for some income to support the Early Childhood Development programme. It is hoped that 25 more Trainer of Trainers can be trained early in 2015, which will require funding. In December, the offices will close over the Christmas break to give staff time to renew and refresh themselves before the New Year and the beginning of a new school term. Give thanks that Gerrie Kasbergen has arrived from the Netherlands to assist the Early Childhood Development programme. Pray for the planning for 2015 and that funding might become available. Pray that staff might have a rest over the Christmas break and be refreshed for the coming year. Penjani Sichinga, the Medical Officer in Charge of the David Gordon Memorial Hospital (DGMH) in Livingstonia is leaving to study Medicine in Zambia. During his absence Lyn Dowds, will take on the additional responsibilities of Medical Officer in Charge of DGMH as well as continuing her medical work there. She will endeavour to continue to develop the hospital and its services. Currently the financial standing of the hospital is poor, with increasing debt which needs to be cleared, as well as the purchase of other necessary equipment and general supplies to ensure all the hospital s vehicles continue running well. In the old building at the hospital, plans are being finalised for the female toilet block, and there are many other areas needing to be fixed or replaced. The Maternity department remains unusually busy with almost 100 babies being born each month for the past few months. Plans for further extension will need to be considered if numbers remain as high as they currently are. Pray for Lyn as she takes on the extra responsibilities at the hospital. Pray for the Hospital staff and for wisdom as difficult decisions need to be made regarding the debt, staff housing and further development. PAKISTAN Ron and Hilary McCartney report that December is a month of examinations at Forman Christian College. Also this month, some Christian students at the College will be presenting a Christmas play, which always attracts many students. Pray for students under the pressure of examinations and pray that the examinations will be conducted with integrity and for fair decision-making.

Pray that the message of the Word becoming flesh will impact the lives of students and staff. INDIA Christopher and Nivedita Benjamin are due to return to the UK on Monday (8th) following a seven-week home assignment in Gujarat. Christopher has been speaking in a number of congregations of the Church of North India in Gujarat sharing about their ministry in London. Give thanks for their home assignment and the opportunities they have had. Pray for safe and trouble-free travel back to London. NEPAL Peter Lockwood, along with colleagues is involved in working on the production of United Mission to Nepal s operational plan for the period Valerie continues her part-time work at UMN in the Human Resources Department where she is specifically involved in expatriate recruitment. Give thanks for the recent successful conference with the technical teams on the continuing development of the new operational plan. Pray for Peter as he attends the Board meeting and AGM of Himal Hydro in December. (UMN set this company up in 1978). Pray for Peter as he travels to UMN Rukum cluster this month to carry out a review of Community Focus Programmes, conduct Project Management training and observe some of the cluster work. SAT-7 Christian festivals impact thousands in Egypt. 'Draw me after you and I will run' was the theme of a major Christian festival in Egypt attended by 10,000 people and broadcast live by SAT-7. Onething, which is organised by the country s largest Evangelical Church, Kasr el Dobara, is aimed at committed Christians who are seeking greater depth in their relationship with God. The festival took place between 23rd and 25th October with each day featuring three teaching and worship sessions. Nancy, a blogger in Egypt for SAT-7's sister website Wazala, reported on the festival, What a blessing it is to be able to worship the Lord amongst thousands physically and millions via satellite and YouTube in a nation that lies in the heart of a region in despair! Christians in our neighbouring countries are being forced out of their homes or killed for the sake of Christ and we are still blessed to be able to worship amongst thousands! Onething clearly grabbed people s interest on SAT-7, attracting more than 650,000 responses on their social media pages. The event comes hot off the heels of the Count it Right festival, which is also in Egypt but has broader appeal; it is aimed more at nominal Christians and those from non-christian backgrounds. This festival, which took place between 3rd to 7th October, attracted around 10,000 people on each of the four days with hundreds coming to faith in Christ. SAT-7 also broadcast from Count it Right and posted videos and

photos of the event on YouTube and Facebook, which provoked over 1.1 million interactions. Give thanks for the impact of both the Onething and Count it Right festivals in Egypt. Pray that the teaching people received will continue to bear fruit in their lives over the months ahead.
