3 It is 500 years ago since Martin Luther pinned his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, sparking what would come to be known as the Protestant Reformation - an anniversary to be marked around the world on 31 October Martin Luther ( ) was not only a theologian and a reformer, he was also a musician and a composer. He believed music was a gift of God s creation and indeed bore the Word of God. God has the Gospel preached through the medium of music. Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music. What Luther, a professor of theology, really wanted was for God to be made accessible to everyone and for worship to be more intimate, more direct. In the reform of the liturgy, he gave congregational singing a renewed role. He composed over thirty chorales and with other musicians, a hymn book. Hymns were to be sung in the vernacular and the singing of hymns taught in schools. Many of Luther s hymns survive and are still sung today - the most famous being Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A mighty Fortress is our God). The role Luther wanted music to have contributed to the incredible development of this art in German speaking countries. Heinrich Schütz ( ), Dietrich Buxtehude ( ), Johann-Sebastian Bach ( ) and many others regularly used Lutheran themes in their cantatas, oratorios and organ music. Each of them developed his own musical language and his instrumentation, but among them Johann-Sebastian Bach gave that language a creative power that had rarely been equalled. To mark this anniversary and to celebrate its musical legacy, the organ voluntaries concluding the services in October will be pieces based on Eine Feste Burg, by different composers. On Sunday 5 November, (the Sunday nearest to Reformation Day ) we will also hear and sing some of the great music of the Reformation as part of our service. CHURCH DATES & ACTIVITIES Neale Agnew If you would like more information on any of these, please speak to any member of staff or leader of the Organisation or Group if you know them or simply office@fisherwick.net, telephone and we will be happy to help you.
