2 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 14 October 2018 Adult Education Opportunities The Catholic Catechism Marianist study will be offering a monthly discussion group led by Msgr. Brovey for those who have finished the first test, on the last Tuesday of the month, 30 October at 7:00pm in the Lower Church. Thursday Book Study: The next book study of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist by Brant Pitre will be Thursday 25 October at 6:30pm in the lower Cathedral. Wine and/or snack to share optional! Sunday mornings with Sr. Margaret: Adult Education classes with Sr. Margaret are held at 10:15am in the parish hall. This Sunday s topic, Lectio Divina, will be taught by Sr. Jennifer Tecla Hyatt. Classes will also meet on 28 October, 4 &11 November, 9 December. One of Charleston Catholic School s core values is academic excellence. This year, 77% of our 8th graders qualified to take the PSAT by scoring in the 90th percentile or higher in Math or Reading on a recent national achievement standardized test. Friday, 19 October is CCS s annual Walk-a-Thon at 12:30pm at Hampton Park benefitting CCS athletic programs and our PTO. All CCS families are invited to participate in this event. Students and families are encouraged to seek sponsors to make pledges in support of our wonderful school. Christian Formation Meetings: Advent Pageant Planning Meeting will be Sunday, 28 October at 10:15 am 1st floor classroom next to choir room. Wednesday Adoration & Confession Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration 12:30-8pm: The new Wednesday schedule is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament following the 12:05 pm Mass until 8pm. Adoration will conclude with Night Prayer and Benediction at 7:50 pm. Everyone is encouraged to sign up for a Holy Hour each Wednesday. Prayerfully consider signing up as a family to pray together before the Blessed Sacrament. Many blessings have been given to those who have made the commitment of a weekly Holy Hour before Our Lord s Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament. A sign up sheet may be found near the elevator. Confessions: offered on Wednesdays at 12:45pm and 7pm in the upper Cathedral. There will no longer be 11:15 am Wednesday Confessions. First Choral Mass at 11:15 am this Sunday Josef Gabriel Rheinberger ( ) an organist and composer, was born in Liechtenstein residing for most of his life in Germany. He showed exceptional musical talent at an early age. Rheinberger married his former pupil, Fanny who wrote much of the texts for her husband s vocal work. He was appointed court conductor, responsible for music for the royal chapel. Rheinberger was appointed Royal Professor of organ and composition for the Munich Conservatorium, a post he held for the remainder of his life. He was a prolific composer. His religious works include 12 Masses, a Requiem and a Stabat Mater. Other works include operas, symphonies, chamber music and choral works. This Sunday, the Cathedral Choir will sing his Missa Brevis.

The Cathedral Women s Club will be selling the republished cookbook (from 2010) beginning this weekend after all Masses in front of the church. Active Membership Various facilities and services are available to our active members. This includes use of the church for Baptisms, Weddings and other Sacramental events, Godparent/Sponsor letters, and includes parishioner status in parochial schools. Active Membership is determined by four things: Being properly registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time. Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Use of the envelope system in support of the parish. Being active in at least one parish program, ministry or organization. Sacrament of Marriage Either the bride or the groom must be a practicing Catholic and registered at the Cathedral for at least twelve months before scheduling a wedding date and beginning the six month marriage preparation. The bride/groom must be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, and use of the envelope system in support of the parish.
