Contact Karen with questions The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, 3 September in observance of Labor Day. Mass will be at 10:00 am on Labor Day, 3 September instead of 12:05 pm. Blessing of the Basil 8/9 September In anticipation of Exaltation of the Holy Cross! (14 September) The herb, basil, has long been associated with the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The word basil is related to basileios, from the Greek word for king. According to liturgical legend, the Empress Saint Helena found the location of the True Cross by digging for it under a colony of basil. Basil plants were reputed to have sprung up at the foot of the Cross where fell the Precious Blood of Christ and the tears of the Mother of Sorrows. A sprig of basil was said to have been found growing from the wood of the True Cross. Bring your sprigs of basil to be blessed the weekend of 8-9 September and place them on the table at the side altar before Mass to be used at your family meal on 14 September. Brovey s book study on Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper by Brant Pitre on Thursdays at 6:30 pm in the lower Cathedral: September 13 & 27 October 11 & 25 A Home Study program using Marian Catechist Apostolate will be offered monthly on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm starting with an informational meeting on 18 September. This is a course that will help you in your prayer life, grow in your knowledge and love for the teachings of the Church and provide fellowship through the monthly discussion groups. Please Msgr. Brovey if you would like to reserve a set of books for the course (more can be ordered, if needed). Join the Interior Life Study Group! This group is for individuals interested in deepening their spiritual life through the practice of mental prayer based on classical works by Carmelite Doctors of the Church and more. There will be weekly reading assignments. Starting with an in-depth study of True Devotion to Mary, based on St. Louis de Montfort. Meeting Mondays, beginning September 10, from 6:30-7:30pm at 105 Queen Street 2nd floor meeting room. Karen McLaurin, O.C.D.S., will be facilitating. 3 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Newsletter Sent to Parish Friday, 24 August 2018 Dear Parishioners: I wanted to update everyone on the private study of the Catholic Catechism that will be offered at the Cathedral parish this Fall as part of our Adult Education program. On Tuesday 18 September at 7pm in the lower Cathedral, I will be offering an informational meeting about the course. The program that we will be using is the Marian Catechist Apostolate. You can find more information about the course at mariancatechist.com. One of the great things about the program is you study at your own pace. However, I will be offering a monthly discussion group to review each chapter at 7pm on the last Tuesday of each month. This is not a new program but a way to respond to the call to holiness through a commitment to prayer and study of the Faith so that we may be authentic witnesses of Christ in our daily lives. And so, it is a program for every Catholic! If you are parents, teach Sunday School, are new to the Catholic Church and/or truly want to know your Catholic Faith better so that you can explain and teach the Faith to others, I would encourage you to sign up. It is a course that will help you in your prayer life, grow in your knowledge and love for the teachings of the Church and provide fellowship through the monthly discussion groups. Please prayerfully consider signing up for the course. I will have 25 sets of the course (the Catechism Course, the Catholic Catechism and a Catholic Dictionary) at the information meeting on Tuesday 18 September. Please me if you would like to reserve a set (more can be ordered, if needed). Many of our parish groups resumed last Sunday after the summer break. I want to welcome back all our Sunday School children as classes resumed last Sunday and our Cathedral Choir as they resumed singing at the 11:15 am Solemn Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity to dive into the true meaning of stewardship and what it means for us as disciples of Jesus Christ. Family Honor will host a Real Love & Real Life parent-child chastity program in Charleston on Saturday, 20 October from 8:30 am-4:00 pm at the Diocesan Meeting Facility, 901 Orange Grove Rd. The program, for parents to attend with their 8 th grade son or daughter, promotes effective family communication about chastity and gives parents resources to help their teen navigate the turbulent waters of our current culture. Pre-registration required, but there is no registration fee; donations will be accepted at the program, however. We expect the program to be full, and space is limited, so please register early. Active Membership Various facilities and services are available to our active members. This includes use of the church for Baptisms, Weddings and other Sacramental events, Godparent/Sponsor letters, and includes parishioner status in parochial schools. Active Membership is determined by four things: Being properly registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time. Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Use of the envelope system in support of the parish. Being active in at least one parish program, ministry or organization. Sacrament of Marriage Either the bride or the groom must be a practicing Catholic and registered at the Cathedral for at least twelve months before scheduling a wedding date and beginning the six month marriage preparation. The bride/groom must be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, and use of the envelope system in support of the parish.
