2 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 11 February 2018 Engaging the Word of God GREAT LENTEN OPPORTUNITY! Sr. Margaret Kerry from Pauline Books & Media will present 3 scripture study classes. This is not Biblical apologetics. It will provide an opportunity for each person to read and pray with the bible, to deepen their Worship and relationship with God and equip each person to be an evangelizer of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Classes are held Sundays at 10:05 am in the Parish Hall on the following dates: 25 February 4 March 11 March All parishioners are welcome! These classes are required attendance for the 1st/2nd Grade Parents Class. Sr. Margaret has been a daughter of St. Paul for 40 years. Originally form New Orleans, Sr. Margaret received her Masters in Pastoral Theology from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. Ushers are needed for the 6:00 pm Mass. Ash Wednesday Lent begins 14 February Mass Times are 12:05 pm and 6:00 pm Stations of the Cross & Benediction Fridays of Lent at 6:30 pm 23 February. 2 March. 9 March. 16 March. 23 March. Catholic Lenten Practices Abstinence: Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all. Fast: Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their sixtieth year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken. Rite of Election Please pray for all our candidates who will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Rite of Election will take place on 18 February 2018 at 2:30 pm. The Parish Office is will be closed 19 February in observance of President s Day. It will reopen on 20 February. In your kindness, you are asked to pray for the happy repose of the soul of Karen Mack, mother of parishioner Teresa Jackson, who died last week. May God grant her eternal rest and may the Lord s consolation be with her family. Severe Flu/Cold Season Due to the severity of the flu/cold season, both the common chalice and the sign of peace will be suspended at all Masses.

3 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time 21 February 2018 at 7 pm Please plan to attend an open Parish Meeting regarding the repainting of the Cathedral interior on Wednesday 21 February at 7pm. Conrad Schmitt Studios will present two color schemes and new lighting proposal. Please plan to attend and offer your comments about the much needed repainting of the Cathedral. Much fun was had by all! Charleston Catholic celebrated Catholic Schools Week Jan. 29Feb. 2. Our students participated in costume theme days including Patriotic Day, Mathlete v. Athlete Day, Crazy Hat & Sock Day, Dress like a 100 year-old Day, and Spirit Day. We also had three guest speakers: Citadel Cadet Cesar Reyes, Sydney Ramsey with Gold Humanism Honor Society, and BE Campus Minister Edson Moya. CCS is most grateful for the prayers and financial gifts from parishioners of our downtown parishes. Thank you for supporting our community of Saints!

4 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 11 February 2018 Due to the generosity of our parishioners, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of downtown Charleston was able to assist the following number of families on the peninsula during the month of January January Assistance: Housing $1, Families SCE&G Bills $4, Families Water $ Family Food 11 People The next campaign runs from 14 February to 25 March For more info visit: Catholic KidzCamp is scheduled this summer for June. The theme this year will be Saints & Virtues. Karen McLaurin is looking for a core team of at least 4 volunteers to commit themselves to organizing this wonderful religious camp alternative for our parish children. She will purchase supplies, organize meetings and help facilitate but a dedicated core team is necessary in order for the camp to take place. Active Membership Various facilities and services are available to our active members. This includes use of the church for Baptisms, Weddings and other Sacramental events, Godparent/Sponsor letters, and includes parishioner status in parochial schools. Active Membership is determined by four things: Being properly registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time. Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Use of the envelope system in support of the parish. Being active in at least one parish program, ministry or organization. Sacrament of Marriage Either the bride or the groom must be a practicing Catholic and registered at the Cathedral for at least twelve months before scheduling a wedding date and beginning the six month marriage preparation. The bride/groom must be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, and use of the envelope system in support of the parish.
