On the 11th of October 1954, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of the Queenship of Mary to be celebrated throughout the world, and commanded that on that day each year, the world should renew its consecration to her. In the future the Feast came to be celebrated on 22nd of August. The purpose of the Feast is that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and motherly sovereignty of her who bore God in her womb (Ven. Pius XII, Ad. Coeli Reginam). On the day of her Assumption, Mary our Mother was solemnly crowned by Christ and received by the whole court of Heaven as Queen. What Christ has done in Heaven and the Church has done on our behalf we should now do individually, that is, we should recognize Mary s Queenship, enthrone her in our homes, consecrate ourselves to her and, by this means, establish in our lives the reign of Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe. 2 Website: Cathedral Music Ministry The Cathedral Choir is taking a welldeserved break for the summer months. Rehearsals will resume in September when the choir will also begin singing the Solemn High Mass each week on Sunday morning at 11:15. They will be also performing on the Cathedral Music Series throughout the year and will include the annual Bishop s Concert with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. If you have ever given thought to possibly joining the Cathedral Choir, now is the perfect time to do so! We currently have openings in each section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) and would welcome any new members. NEW!!! This past year we established the Cathedral Girl Choristers. The Choristers provided musical leadership for the 9:00am Sunday Mass, which has traditionally been a family orientated Liturgy. The girls enjoyed singing and the parishioners enjoyed hearing their music throughout the year. We are looking forward to another exciting year. The Cathedral Girl Choristers will rehearse each Tuesday afternoon from 3:00pm-4:00pm and will be singing at least twice a month. The choristers will learn about vocal production, music theory and history, sight-singing, and there will also be fun musical activities!! He went to the Jesuit college at Caen when he was 14, and despite his parents wish that he marry, joined the Congregation of the Oratory of France in He studied at Paris and at Aubervilliers, was ordained in 1625, and worked as a volunteer, caring for the victims of the plagues that struck Normandy in 1625 and 1631, and spent the next decade giving Missions, building a reputation as an outstanding preacher and confessor and for his opposition to Jansenism. He became interested in helping fallen women, and in 1641, with Madeleine Lamy, founded a refuge for them in Caen under the direction of the Visitandines. John founded seminaries at Lisieux in 1653 and Rouen in 1659 and was unsuccessful in another attempt to secure Papal approval of his congregation, but in 1666 the Refuge sisters received Pope Alexander III s approval as an institute to reclaim and care for penitent wayward women. John continued giving missions and established new seminaries at Evreux in 1666 and Rennes in He shared with St. Mary Margaret Alacoque the honor of initiating devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (he composed the Mass for the Sacred Heart in 1668) and the Holy Heart of Mary, popularizing the devotions with his The Devotion to the Adorable Heart of Jesus (1670) and The Admirable Heart of the Most Holy Mother of God, which he finished a month before his death at Caen on August 19th. He was canonized in Saint Pius X, Pope (Feast day 21 August) On June 2, 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto saw the light of earth at Riesi, Province of Treviso, in Venice; on August 20, 1914, he saw the light of heaven; and on May 29, 1954, he who had become the two hundred fifty-ninth pope was canonized St. Pius X. Two of the most outstanding accomplishments of this saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renewal and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He also waged an unwavering war against the heresy and evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His overriding concern was to renew all things in Christ. Above all, his holiness shone forth conspicuously. From St. Pius X we learn again that the folly of the Cross, simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest wisdom and the indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness. His last will and testament bears the striking sentence: I was born poor, I have lived in poverty, and I wish to die poor.

Middle school is an important time as students are growing into young adults and preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation--we need loving, passionate teachers who can help them understand and appreciate their Catholic faith! Attention Citadel Family: As Matriculation Day for the Class of 2019 at The Citadel is coming soon there is a need for 4th Class sponsor families for International and American cadets from far away. The Citadel has loads of incoming knobs requesting host families but does not have enough sponsors to accommodate everyone. There is a particular need for Catholic Sponsor families for Catholic freshmen. These cadets could really benefit from having a place where they might decompress and have a home away from home. If you are willing and able to serve as a surrogate parent, here is your chance to make a big difference in the life of a lowly knob. -School of Christian Formation Classes begin Sunday, 20 September, 10:05-11:05 a.m. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry is in need of a large upright freezer. If you are moving or just have an extra working freezer, please consider a donation to the food pantry. You can do as much or as little with a sponsor knob as you can. Some families invite their knobbies to their home every weekend. Some visit with their knobbies once per month. Your knobs can truly become part of your family and their family yours. Meaningful bonds are created each year and you could have that as well. This program is designed to help knobs that live further away than South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia and those that live the furthest away are the first to be matched. You can request a knob from a certain cadet company, or from a particular state, or a specific major, or a knob who likes fishing! If you are interested in serving as a 4th Class Sponsor, drop an to shelton.milner@citadel.edu and she will send you the application form to complete. You will need three (3) references to apply. If so, Sidewalk Advocates for Life training is for you! This new sidewalk counseling program employs a compassionate, womancentered approach to take the crisis out of crisis pregnancies and thereby save babies lives. This is not about judging women: the program focuses instead on extending Christ s love through education, conversation, and practical help (i.e. connecting women to local pregnancy centers for further support). The next two-day training session will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Goose Creek on Friday, August 21st, from 6:30 to 10 PM and Saturday, 22 August, from 1 PM to 5 PM. Registration (payable at the door) is $15 and includes course materials and refreshments. The only pre-requisites are a humble desire to reach out in love and a willingness to donate two hours a month of volunteer outreach time on the sidewalk at the abortion clinic after training is completed.
