2 Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 12 November 2017 Jesus is Coming! Let s get ready! Come start the season! At The Parish Advent Festival! 3 December After the 9:00 am Mass. Advent Wreath Making! Food! Music! Outdoors under a tent! Family Event! You may reserve a wreath for $12 or bring your own. Greens will be provided. Please consider donating your time and talent to help make the Advent Festival an enjoyable event for all. We are looking for volunteers for hospitality in set up, providing food, and clean up. There are two ways to sign up 1) at the Fellowship Coffee after 9:00 am Mass or online at SignUp Genius found -advent. The sign up deadline is 20 November. Thanksgiving Week Mass on Thanksgiving Day, 23 November 2017 will be at 10:00 am. There will be NO Mass on Friday, 24 November. The Parish Offices will be closed Wednesday, 22 November Friday, 24 November for the Thanksgiving holiday. On Sunday, 19 November, Pope Francis will celebrate a special Mass to honor World Day of the Poor. The Holy Father has asked all parishes to participate in some manner. In cooperation with Pope Francis intentions that day, we ask that all parishioners bring a non-perishable food item to fill up our St. Vincent de Paul pantry, which is needed especially as we approach the holiday season. World Day of the Poor was established as an initiative rising from the Year of Mercy as a way to encourage encounters, friendship, solidarity and concrete assistance to the poor. SVDP Food Pantry: In preparation of Thanksgiving the Food Pantry asks for your consideration donating the following items: Jars of Gravy, Stuffing Mixes, Canned tuna, Chef Boyardee, Chili, Stew, Canned Chicken, Grape Jelly, Cereal Boxes, Green Beans, Pancake Mix, Vienna Sausage, Detergents and Cleaning Supplies. Due to the generosity of our parishioners, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of downtown Charleston was able to assist the following number of families on the peninsula during the month of October October Assistance: Housing $ families SCE&G Bills $8, families Transportation $ families Food 6 families Ushers are greatly needed for the Sunday, 6 pm Mass. All Confirmation Students are required to attend. Many thanks to our Confirmation students for all their work in making our All Saints Day party a great success and fun for everyone! Awesome homemade cookies, wonderful games, and those who served at Mass made for a wonderful day! Thanks also to the Cathedral Women s Club for providing the pizza, and also to those members who helped set up and decorate. Finally, to all who stayed after to clean up, many thanks for your time. Holy City Messiah George Frederic Handel s Messiah 7 December 2017 at 7:30 pm Cathedral of St. John the Baptist The concert will feature Part the First and selections from Parts the Second and Third. Tickets at are available for $40 adults and seniors and $10 students (ages 6-22). Help Decorate the Cathedral for Christmas! We are beginning to plan now! Help is needed collecting the free Christmas tree cuttings available from local merchants and putting them in buckets of water until needed. We need tons of cuttings! We also need other greenery including magnolia leaves, long leaf pine, cedar, podacarpus/yew, holly leaves and berries, boxwood, and any other greenery that will last after being cut. All cuttings need to be kept in water and can be dropped off at the church during office hours through 18 December. Solemn Vespers: 21 January 2018 at 4:00 pm the Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist will host the combined choirs of Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and Grace Episcopal Cathedral as they sing Solemn Vespers in observance of the Week of Christian Unity. Monsignor Steven Brovey, Rector of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and The Very Reverend J. Michael A. Wright, Rector and Dean of Grace Cathedral, will preside. Active Membership Various facilities and services are available to our active members. This includes use of the church for Baptisms, Weddings and other Sacramental events, Godparent/Sponsor letters, and includes parishioner status in parochial schools. Active Membership is determined by four things: Being properly registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time. Faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Use of the envelope system in support of the parish. Being active in at least one parish program, ministry or organization. Sacrament of Marriage Either the bride or the groom must be a practicing Catholic and registered at the Cathedral for at least twelve months before scheduling a wedding date and beginning the six month marriage preparation. The bride/groom must be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, and use of the envelope system in support of the parish.
