Praem Sunday Assistance MISSION STATEMENT We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION On the First Friday of each month we gather in prayer and praise before the Blessed Sacrament. Following the 8 a.m. Mass and concluding at 8 p.m. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Parents of infants requesting information about Baptism may contact Father Ken in the parish office. Infant baptisms are celebrated on the second Saturday of the month. CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIAN FUNERALS At the time of death, a family member should contact the parish office, as soon as possible, to arrange the date and time for the Funeral Liturgy. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Couples must begin preparation for their Sacrament at least six months prior to their proposed wedding date. Please call the parish office for more information. SACRAMENT OF THE SICK The third Saturday of each month after the 8:00 a.m. Mass. 3 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15, 2017 Page 3 At Our Parish Behold Our God To Whom We Looked To Save Us This week we experienced the horror of the mass shooting and senseless massacre of people in Las Vegas. As Las Vegas is a destination venue for people across the country, the shock, trauma and sadness was widespread. We all feel the impact. This horrific destruction of life may call us back to more reliance on God, to remember that we do not save ourselves. We might invite some friends to return to church with us. This destruction may also challenge our attitude toward weapons of destruction. If we are adamant about NO RESTRICTIONS on owning guns are we then in some way complicit when such massacres occur? Along with the death, injuries, suffering in families and communities we also witnessed a heroic outpouring of love, personal care and support. Many sacrificed their own safety to protect others. This care, compassion, kindness and sacrifice for others may indeed be the wedding garment missing from todays banquet (see Gospel). That gospel reflects the situation of the early church. The Christian movement attracted gentiles and fallen-away Jews, but generally not the Jewish leadership. This puzzled Matthew (himself a faithful Jew). He claims that the leadership were the first to receive the invitation to the banquet but rejected it as we also may do. In today s readings God is presented as a generous and gracious host who offers the best feast. He invites (but does not compel) people to attend, even those off the streets. Joy is an essential element of the feast. God is the one in whom we rejoice because He has saved us (Isaiah). The psalmist reveals God as our shepherd, our guide and our strength, God s goodness and kindness follow us as we dwell in God s house all our days. No massacre can take this away. Jesus models this invitation by God. He was known for his fellowship meals with those ordinarily excluded and through his disciples this table fellowship was extended to the Gentiles. We ought not be party poopers but accept God s invitation. There is an added passage to the gospel about the guest with no wedding garment. The garment may not be clothing. One has to be gracious, generous, compassionate, forgiving and loving to belong at the feast. Only those attired as Christ is, (Paul: clothe yourselves in Christ Jesus ) i.e., with a love like Christ s will be able to enjoy the feast. Happy Feasting, Father Delahunty

John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, and Companions Friday: St. Paul of the Cross Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us RSVP to God s invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 9 Vigésimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 15 de octubre de 2017 Page 9 Lecturas y Noticias EL BANQUETE CELESTIAL El monte del Señor descrito en la primera lectura de hoy es un lugar donde no hay más hambre, ni llanto, ni ningún tipo de división. Necesitamos detenernos y pensar sobre estas imágenes de cuando en cuando, especialmente dado el hecho de que vivimos en un mundo tan fragmentado. El salmo responsorial continúa pintando el cuadro de un lugar donde sólo florecen la bondad y la generosidad. Estas lecturas describen el banquete celestial, al que Dios nos llama mediante el bautismo y continúa llamándonos a lo largo de nuestra vida. Respondamos a la invitación de Dios y vivamos nuestra vida conforme a los valores del Evangelio para que un día seamos bienvenidos a la mesa del banquete en el Reino. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 2006, en la plaza de Taos se erigió una estatua de bronce que conmemora al cura de Taos, Antonio José Martínez, un sacerdote recordado como controversial ante varios gobiernos por defender a su pueblo. Él fue sacerdote en Taos, Nuevo México cuando era territorio español, luego mexicano y finalmente cuando pasa a manos de EE. UU. Durante la época española y mexicana Antonio estableció escuelas para niños y niñas y fundó un seminario para preparar un clero nativo. En 1830 empezó a imprimir libros y estableció el primer periódico Nuevo Mexicano. De esta manera estableció Taos como un centro de educación. En 1851 llegaron los representantes del gobierno estadounidense con la intención de americanizar a los nuevos mexicanos prohibiéndoles sus tradiciones declarando que eran ignorantes y supersticiosas. Antonio José contradijo este movimiento convirtiendo su seminario en una escuela de leyes. Decía que el gobierno de EE. UU es un burro que debe ser montado por abogados. Muchos se opusieron a su obra pero él continuó luchando por su pueblo hasta su muerte en Su tumba lo declara: La honra de su país.
