Tom This weekend in the Church we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. Traditionally this feast has been celebrated on January 6. In the Collect (opening Prayer of the Mass) for the Mass during the day, we hear the words, O God who on this day revealed Your only begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star The Communion Antiphon continues, we have seen his star in the East and have come with gifts to adore the Lord. These beautiful words really make one reflect on the beauty of this feast and the entire Christmas Season, when God became man so that mankind could become like God. Epiphany means manifestation, a showing. In many countries, especially eastern countries, this feast is celebrated with greater solemnity than Christmas itself. In fact, the Feast of the Epiphany is also called Little Christmas. On Christmas, the Christ Child revealed himself to the Jewish people, however, on the Feast of Epiphany, He reveals Himself to the Gentile world, in the person of the Magi. But who were the Magi? Magi was the word used to describe men from the East. These Magi were mature scientists, students of the stars. They were men of mystery; they were not Jews. It has been said, they were of a median tribe that lived a nomadic life somewhere in Persia. It is interesting to note that in all of Sacred Scripture, these Magi, these wise men, speak only two sentences and nothing more. Their knowledge about the Christ Child s birth and His association with the star is not known for sure but most likely given to them by a direct divine revelation. Their journey must have been a long, arduous one, certainly not easy. Surely they encountered hardships, danger and had to make sacrifices. But once they received the revelation about the birth of the Christ Child, they were determined! The star they followed, as a guide, was no ordinary star. Their stay in Bethlehem was probably brief and then they returned home by another route. They quickly disappear from the pages of Sacred Scripture just as they entered them. We hear from them no more. Their visit is a true revelation that the world s long awaited Savior had come to save all mankind. What can you and I learn from these Magi, these wise men, who gaze at stars? As these wise men left everything and went in search of the Christ Child, we too should go and adore the Lord Jesus truly present in the Tabernacle, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. As they honored the Christ Child with gifts, we should honor Him with the gold of our lives and good works, our charity, love and service to others. They gave Him frankincense; we too must give our worship to Him as God. They offered myrrh; we should offer our sorrow for sins committed against Him. We can express our joy since Christ revealed Himself to each of us, this manifestation, this epiphany will have true meaning in our lives as well! Have a Blessed Little Christmas. We hope you enjoyed the decorations so tastefully arranged (which included our NOEL signs handmade by the late Deacon John Coffey.) The décor was the result of the generous contributions of the members of our parish family as well as the creative efforts of our volunteers. Bingo on Tuesdays!! BINGO is back every Tuesday evening beginning with the Early Bird Special at 7:15 p.m. and Game 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Msgr. Walsh Hall. Food is also available. If anyone is interested in volunteering at BINGO, please call the Parish Center. Volunteers are needed for the Bingo kitchen. Recycle Your Old Christmas Cards Don t throw out your old Christmas cards when you are done with them. First they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we presume to present our gifts to the Lord.
