Then he said to the crowd, Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. Lk 12:13-15 From the Pastor s Desk Often in our life we accumulate many things and in today s gospel Jesus reminds us of this fact. Jesus knew that our human heart tends to desire worldly things, lusting after human flesh, money, power, and prestige. Jesus knows our rapacious hearts and that given the chance we will seek to acquire more and more things. Oh Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, all is vanity and so Jesus sees the need to remind us of the reading from Qoheleth. This is because he knows that our human nature tends to stray towards worldly things, but what good does it do for us if we never get to enjoy them truly as God has meant them to be enjoyed. Certainly God does not mean we cannot be rich or possess things, but when they become the center of our lives then our thoughts become eschewed. I can say for myself that I must always keep my eye on the prize as they say. I love technology and if I had my way I would buy every new electronic devise that comes out, but that would be selfish and selfcentered, in a way pushing God out of my life and worshiping idol gods (stuff). We can often be pulled at both ends and lose focus, that is why prayer and reflection is so important in our faith life. Without prayer and reflection we can be easily drawn into a secular attitude. As Jesus reminds us what good can it do us if we accumulate things since we do not know when our life will be demanded of us at a time we cannot predict. I have a priest friend who is a scholar and is loved by all the people he serves. When he gets gifts from them he immediately gives them away. When I questioned him, he told me first why would I burden someone with the task of sorting through the many gifts I received over the years when I die, and secondly and more importantly there s someone out there that could use them more then I can. To this day he continues to live by this. Someone bought him a high definition large screen TV, the next day it was gone. So the moral of our story is to get our priorities in life in the right order, so that our lives are not selfcentered and about me, myself and I. God wants us to enjoy life but not at the sacrifice of others. May we truly and faithfully live out our Christian discipleship. God Bless! Fr. Ernie 1

Singers will perform modern and classical church music in English and Latin. All young cantors will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist during church services and other events at St. Mary s. Last year s Christmas Pageant was successfully performed during two shows. We invite back all actors who made their debut in 2009 and anyone else who may be interested to try their acting/singing/dancing talents to perform in our 2010 Christmas Musical. We hope you will join us: A Special Invitation: Join Us at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena Wednesdays, at 7 pm St. Mary s Church All are invited to participate in the beautiful novena and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which is moderated by Fr. George each Wednesday evening. Come, with your special needs and cares and find some comfort and peace through prayers and songs. The Power of the Picture According to th e Catholic Encyclopedia, the original picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is painted on wood, with a background of gold. It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century. It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present before Him the instruments of His Passion. Over the figures in the actual picture are some Greek letters, which form the abbreviated words Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael, and Archangel Gabriel, respectively. It was brought to Rome toward the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant, who, dying there, ordered by his will that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration. A facsimile of the Holy Picture is on display in St. Mary s Church and is placed in front of the altar for the Wednesday novenas. Devotion to the Divine Mercy Every Thursday Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in 1931 and told her that she was to prepare the world for his return. Devotion to the Divine Mercy can help us embrace this hope of salvation. Come and join us every Thursday at 7:00 pm in St. Mary s Chapel (in the Parish Center). There will be exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. For additional information, please call Deacon Rey or Edna Trinidad at Bingo on Tuesdays in the Summer!
