Rosary Society News The next meeting of the St. Mary s Rosary Society will be held on Monday, Sept. 14 th at 7:30 PM in the school hall. All Women of the Parish are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Catholic Daughters Meetings will resume on Monday, September 21 st at 5 PM for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Gratia #751. We will have a raffle drawing following the business meeting. Interested in Singing? If you like to sing classical works of joy, the Chorus of Communities welcomes you to join our group of supportive and talented musicians. We will practice on Monday evenings in Grace Church, in Nutley, for our upcoming Christmas Concert. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Pastor s Note: After I arrived at Saint Mary s in August of 2013, I became aware there were four pending projects which had not been completed. These were restoration of the Church Bell, The Divine Mercy Shrine and the Blessed Mother Shrine, both in the Church, and the St. Francis Garden in the main parking lot. The Church Bell: The church bell is currently on display in front of the bell tower. The bell was removed from the bell tower in September of 2010, due to its weight of 1200 pounds and poor flooring in the tower. The bell dates to 1882 and has the inscription of Sancta Maria, indicating that the bell was made specifically for St. Mary s Parish. Last year the bell was added to the pad with the help of the Nutley Volunteer Rescue Squad. This project was completed with a generous donation from the Rosary Society and the dedication and hard work of our late beloved parishioner, Jim Paulson. The Divine Mercy Shrine: Deacon Rey and Edna Trinidad worked very hard to help bring this beautiful shrine to completion. The generosity of many parishioners and non-parishioners helped to fund and complete this project. Blessed Mother Shrine and Saint Francis Garden: Both of these projects are the result of the generosity of our Rosary Society and many parishioners over the past few years. In a special way, I would like to thank the Rosary Society for their good works for our parish. Their generosity along with many of our parishioners have helped to preserve and enhance the proud tradition of Saint Mary s Church. With that in mind, I ask for your support of their Fall Festival Tricky Tray to be held Friday, October 23rd, 2015 at 6pm in Monsignor Walsh Hall. Thank you and God Bless, Fr. 4 The 23rd Sunday in ordinary time presents the second of five portions of the book of James. James warns the Christian community to which he speaks to not treat people based on their status. (You may recall a similar story known as the Parable of the Wedding Feast from Matthew 22 and Luke 14.) We also hear a portion of Isaiah which is also read on the third Sunday of advent in cycle a. I am sure you will find many of the images in this Isaiah reading to be familiar. Two of these; the ears of the deaf cleared and the tongue of the mute singing form a daisy chain linking the Isaiah reading to today's gospel. In the gospel, Jesus touches the tongue and puts mud in the ears of a deaf mute. The man immediately begins to hear and speak. Despite Jesus' directions to the people not to tell anyone, the word spread quickly. I trust you will find many connections between today's music selections and these scripture readings. Instead I will pose two questions for you to ponder based on the scripture: 1. In what ways do I turn a deaf ear or a silent tongue to God's call to be a doer of the word? 2. Do I consider myself unworthy of being a minister of God's love to others. I hope you will share some of your thoughts with me. (My is listed below.) I will not share anything you write publicly. At your musical service, Bruce Religious Education News First day of Religious Education classes: Ø Sunday, September 13 Ø Tuesday, September 15 During our first day of classes, parents are invited to Walsh Hall for coffee, while our students spend some time in their classroom. We will end the first class with an assembly and prayer service. A welcome packet was mailed this past week with information about our first day of class, guidelines and calendar for the year. If you haven't yet registered, please do so today. Save the Date! Saturday, September 26 following the 5:30 PM Mass Family Fest - This September, the Holy Father, Pope Francis will be visiting the United States for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. In celebration of his Papal visit, we will be having our own Gathering of Families for our Religious Ed families in Walsh Hall. We will have food, crafts and family activities. St. Mary s Food Pantry will be running a food drive and collecting non-perishable food items on Sunday, October 4 th from 12 NOON to 4 PM in front of the Nutley ShopRite. This drive is a part of the Annual Food Drive through Mend (part of Catholic Charities). Volunteers are needed for 1 hour time slots to hand out flyers with food items. All foods collected will be given to our Parish Pantry. Please call the Parish Center at between the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM to volunteer. Someone will call you to make arrangements. Thank you for your help! - Pantry Coordinator Knights of Columbus Membership The Knights of Columbus invite all members of the congregation to join them in celebrating the installation of new officers.
