McDowall US Bishops Response to Inaccurate Statements During the Vice Presidential Debate WASHINGTON The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following statement, October 12. Full text follows: Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees: "With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact." This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain "religious employers." That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to "Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital," or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served. HHS has proposed an additional "accommodation" for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as "non-exempt." That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation "to pay for contraception" and "to be a vehicle to get contraception." They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries. USCCB continues to urge HHS, in the strongest possible terms, actually to eliminate the various infringements on religious freedom imposed by the mandate. Hosts For every Mass have been donated by the Rosary Society For more details, please see USCCB's regulatory comments filed on May 15 regarding the proposed "accommodation": 15.pdf 1

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the Truth and will be diverted to myths. (2Tim. 4:1-4) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Year of Faith, declared by our Holy Father Pope Benedict the XVII, has begun. As mentioned in previous bulletins, a plenary indulgence has been attached to this year, and information on how to obtain this indulgence is found in a flyer at the back of the church. In order to assist you in your efforts to participate in the Year of Faith through study and prayer, we have available for you some resources such as the booklet Outlines of the Catholic Faith, which is based on the four pillars of our churches teaching. In addition, we have a number of rosaries and medals blessed by the Holy Father during my recent trip to Rome for your use during prayer that you can pick up at the parish center or from one of the priests for a small donation to defray the cost of purchase for the parish. We will keep you updated on the programs that we are planning throughout the year in response to our Holy Father s request. We hope these progams and devotions will help rekindle the faith in our hearts as well as help others to draw closer to Christ. Know that the priests will keep you, our parish family, continually in our prayers. 2 St. Mary s Food Pantry Action Against Hunger Food Drive (Catholic Charities) The 19th Annual Listed below are things the St. Mary s Food Pantry are in need of: cereal pasta marinara sauce apple juice tea bags Jell-O corn muffin mix tuna fish soup macaroni & cheese You can be part of our drive by dropping contributions in the vestibule of church. 3 A Note from the Choirmaster As Fr. Ernie said last week, we ll have a series of articles on music in the liturgy to discuss the nature of liturgical music, its role, and to keep you informed about our growing music program. We ll begin with the latter. You may have noticed several modifications to the way music is made in the church during Masses. These have been made after much deliberation and discussion, and are such to facilitate your musical participation. For example, the cantors now sing primarily from the rear balcony. This adjustment is due to our church s size, organ, sound system, and reverberant acoustics (which wonderfully carry music). The cantor singing with the organ in the balcony not only allows both cantor and organist to be much more together and less confusing to you, it allows the cantor to lead more from within the congregation rather than at the congregation, not to mention a greater ease of logistics between musicians. Less use of the microphone on congregational parts, too, allows the beautiful voices of our cantors to lead naturally, rather than as an artificially amplified voice filling the entire church with little room for anyone else s voice. As our music program continues to grow, so do the number of choirs. This is an exciting development! It is common for larger, more comprehensive music programs to encompass several different choirs, partly to allow as many people as possible to participate and because our living musical heritage is enormous with contrasting demands. I m greatly pleased with our parish choir and their progress. I think we will continue to find their leadership and contributions to the 10:30 Mass highly valuable. While plans are in the works for a children s choir program, this year, we are fortunate to add a new choir called the Schola Cantorum to the parish. They have made their home at the 12:00 Mass, and cultivate a specific kind of sacred choral music called polyphony. While I ll write more about this later, suffice to say now that this style of musical composition grew directly from the sung liturgy itself, and is a major part of our musical heritage as Catholics. Because of the time period most of polyphony was written, much of it is in Latin, thus, you will find English translations in the liturgy leaflet. Speaking of the liturgy leaflet, we are printing these weekly to aid your participation in the musical portions of Mass. Many, many hours have been spent creating these leaflets, and I hope you find them helpful. All page and hymn numbers refer to the missalette in the pews. Lastly, it is a pleasure to serve you and St. Mary s! Jonathan Ryan Liturgy Leaflets We have begun using our new Liturgy Leaflets. Designed to aid your participation in Mass, they include all the musical selections, Missalette numbers, choral, and organ selections. We hope you will find them helpful. Please return them after Mass for use at the next Mass. St. Mary s Annual Turkey Drive St. Mary's is holding its Annual Turkey Drive. Frozen turkeys are being collected for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and will be distributed to needy families in our area. The frozen turkeys will be collected in the St. Mary's parking lot (between the school and the Parish Center) on Sat., Nov. 17 between 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and on Sun., Nov. 18 between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
