1 Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal This year's Appeal, Sharing God's Blessings is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God s generosity to us and to share the blessings we have been given in those around us. This year, our Parish goal is $49, This year's Annual Appeal will continue to support the many good works at the ministries throughout the Archdiocese. We are often reminded by our Holy Father Pope Francis and sacred scripture that in order to love one another we must share the blessings which God has provided to us, We are called to similarly share what is granted to us by God and return it to Him so that not one of our brothers and sisters goes without; without the gifts of faith, without the essential human needs, and without a personal relationship with Our Lord. The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO programs available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most important, brings Christ's Good News to the people of the Archdiocese. Thousands of people in the four counties served by the Archdiocese of Newark are assisted each year through various programs and ministries funded by the Appeal. Our Parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if we exceed our goal. Attention: Parishioners Celebrating a 5 th, 25 th or 50 th Wedding Anniversary Please come to or call the Parish Center to register for a special Mass to be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph Tobin in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark. The Mass for those celebrating a 5 th or 25 th Anniversary will be at 3 PM on April 30 th, Registration is due April 14 th. The Mass for those celebrating a 50 th Anniversary will be at 3 PM on May 7 th, Registration is due April 21. During Lent, we are called to pray, fast and give alms, so that we may prepare our hearts to receive full the joy of Easter. Operation Rice Bowl is a great way to work on all three of those parts of Lent! If you or your family decides to give up those stops at McDonald's you could use that to benefit others too. The fasting (or skipping) that fast food run will save you money and you could put those savings into the Operation Rice Bowl box. Now of course you still need to eat, but maybe instead of a quick meal, everyone helps to make dinner. When you sit down to eat, try praying together to thank God and to pray for those who are in need. If you did that once a week for the 6 weeks of Lent, just think of how much different your Lent will be! You will grow closer as a family, pray together, and help others ($20 per meal for a family x 6 weeks = $120). The money raised through Operation Rice Bowl will go to feed the hungry in the US and around the world. Now that is a life changing Lent! Facebook Saint Joseph Regional HS Craft Shows Ireland and New Jersey: From History to Heritage Celebrate St. Patrick s Month with the Pirates of Irish Persuasion & Extraction (PIPE) Alumni Club and Seton Hall University Alumni Relations at a presentation titled Ireland and New Jersey: From History to Heritage. Our featured speaker at this event, which is part of PIPE s Irish Studies Discussion Series, will be Dr. Dermot Quinn, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History at Seton Hall University. Dr. Quinn, author of The Irish in New Jersey: Four Centuries of American Life, has received much recognition in the Irish-American and scholarly communities, and is a sought-after commentator on the Irish experience in New Jersey. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Nursing Amphitheater on the ground level of the Caroline D. 5 Wandering, Awareness and Tapping into God Have you given up chocolate for Lent? Fr. Rich told me not to and I do everything he tells me. (At least 50% of this statement is true.) In this morning s segment of Best Lent Ever, Matthew Kelly talks about being aware of God s call. (A quick reminder: I am writing this on the Monday before you are reading it.) What God wants to give us it s an extraordinary gift really is the gift of present moment awareness. He wants us to be aware of things while they re actually happening. So right now, you re experiencing this message. Are you here? Are you thinking about what you have to do today? Are you thinking about something that has already happened today? Or are you here? Am I here? Yes. Wait, there s a blizzard coming. What time will I pick up my daughter from school? OK, I m back now. Will one of the novenas be cancelled? Got to stop wandering! OK, back. Maybe we ll be snowed in tomorrow. That sounds like fun. We can play games, watch movies and make pizza. Come on mind, stop wandering! I hate to admit it, but it gets worse. A little while later I am at daily mass. The priest is beginning to bless the bread and wine and I m thinking about what I need to do before the bus comes at 3:15. Help! Me, Lord! In the beginning of today s first reading from the book of Genesis the Israelites are wandering through the desert and have no water. They conclude that God has abandoned them. You and I know the truth. God and the water were nearby all the time. The Israelites just weren t aware of it. Perhaps water in is a good analogy for God. It can be incredibly powerful; like a flood. It can also be incredibly persistent; like that leak that starts each time it rains. In the case of today s reading God is like the latter. God is close by whether we are aware of it or wandering through a desert of distractions. God is waiting patiently, calling us quietly, yet persistently. Like water in the rock; waiting to be tapped. If today you hear God s voice, harden not your hearts.
