Sniscak Intention of his Family, Liv ing & Deceased Chapel Lamp In Memory of Molly Coogan Hosts For every Mass have been donated by the Rosary Society From the Pastor s Desk Archbishop Myers has appointed Father Ernest Rush, currently a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Bayonne, to be the pastor of St. Mary s as of July 1, as many of you know by now. Even after I got the letter saying this was so, I wanted to wait until The Catholic Advocate carried the official announcement before mentioning it in this space. Father Ernie and I have already had several extended meetings to plan a smooth transition. Although I knew who he was (especially since he has served as a master of ceremonies for bishops administering Confirmation, including here), I didn t know him personally, and so was very curious about what he was like. I have found him to be very kind and friendly, and enormously approachable, fine qualities for a pastor to have. He has also asked any number of questions that indicate he is a level-headed person of good judgment. Most important of all, his dedication to the ways of Christ is very apparent and this is the one quality that, in the end, makes all the difference that counts. Father Ernie is forty-four, and has been a priest for eight years. I think we can surmise the Archbishop s confidence in him from the fact that priests are normally expected to have ten years of experience before they are given a parish to run. Besides, he is being appointed pastor from the outset of his work here. (Those who head parishes for the first time are often initially named administrators, and then, after they have demonstrated their capability, are given the title pastor.) Some of you may know Father Ernie from his days before he studied to be a priest, when he was a paramedic and an educator of nurses at Clara Maass Medical Center. This previous work means not only that he is familiar with our area, but also that he is used to working with people in even the most challenging situations they have to face. For a number of weeks I ve been in great suspense about the identity of my successor. But now I couldn t be more confident that St. Mary s will be in the care of a pastor under whose direction it will flourish. I think the parish will be entering a wonderful era with the arrival of Father Ernest Rush. My new assignment, also to begin July 1, will be as the spiritual director of the college seminary at Seton Hall. I was very surprised, and honored, to be asked to do this work, and am looking forward to it immensely. Bishop Arthur Serratelli will ordain our parishioner Steve Sniscak a priest for the Diocese of Paterson next Saturday morning at 10:30 at St. John s Cathedral. Father Steve will celebrate his first Mass here next Sunday, at our regularly scheduled 12:00 Mass. I hope you will be able to attend both the Mass and the reception that will follow it in Monsignor Walsh Hall, where you can meet Father Steve and enjoy light refreshments. We need more good priests, and Father Steve will surely be one of them. Pray for him. Msgr. David Hubba 1

3 Parish Registration Why is it so important that we register in a parish? Isn't it good enough that we go to Mass? Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses, confessions and devotions are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission. Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish Liturgical Publications Inc. If you are new to the parish and would like to register or if you currently attend Mass at St. Mary s but are not yet a registered parishioner and would like to become one, please stop by the office at the back of the church and fill out a registration card or contact the Parish Center. Also, if you have a change of address or will be moving, please let us know. Marriage Enrichment Weekend As summer approaches, our thoughts turn to vacations and the rejuvenation they bring. Would you like to bring that same refreshment and rejuvenation to that special relationship we call marriage? Why not join us for a weekend for the two of you to nourish and refresh your marriage July 23 25? It may seem like a long time away, but space is limited so sign up now. To register or for more info, call Sal & Sylvia Vassallo at or at sylviav12@aol.com. This special weekend is brought to you by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, strengthening marriages for over 40 years! New Co-Adjutor Bishop Named For Trenton It has been announced that the Holy Father has named Vincentian Father David O Connell, up to now President of the Catholic University of America, Co-Adjutor Bishop of Trenton, New Jersey. As Co-Adjutor, Bishop-Elect O Connell will automatically succeed Bishop John M. Smith of Trenton upon his retirement. See What Good You Can Do! If you have eyeglasses you no longer use, why not donate them to Eyes for the Needy. It s as easy as dropping them off in the collection basket in the vestibule of the Church. Thank you for your generosity and for helping those in need. 3 Children s Summer Programs St. Mary s Vacation Bible School Egypt: Joseph s Journey from Prison to Palace will be held from Aug. 2 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Msgr. 4 Ordination of Deacon Steve Sniscak The people of our Parish congratulate our parishioner, Father Steve Sniscak, on his ordination to the priesthood on June 19, He will celebrate his first Mass at St. Mary s at 12 Noon on Sunday, June 20. We invite all to attend the Mass and a reception to be held in Msgr. Walsh Hall immediately following the Mass. Ordination Blessing Dear Lord, bless these servants who go forth to do your will. As Melchizedek, your priest-king of Jerusalem, sealed his covenant with bread and wine, bless these who will renew your covenant with us through the celebration of the Eucharist. As prayer, anointing, and laying on of hands made kings in ancient Israel, may these chosen ones, after their anointing, imitate the King of all kings in their service to your people. As the apostles were sent by Christ to make followers of all nations, inspire your shepherds to lead all they encounter into the loving arms of your universal family and faith. Amen. 4

5 No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves. Amelia Earhart Scriptural Reflection on Stewardship When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet. Luke 7:44 Today s Gospel calls us to consider how we serve God. Do we consume like the Pharisee who simply reclines at the table and expects to be served? Or do we contribute like the woman who kneels before Jesus and washes His feet? Every day we must make a choice. Take or give? Consume or contribute? Recline or serve? Holy Father s Prayer Intention for June That every national and transnational institution may strive to guarantee respect for human life from conception to natural death. MASS Just a reminder that even though our Religious Education program is finished for the summer, we will continue to have our Sunday 10:30 Family Mass in Msgr. Walsh Hall through the summer.
