If you or someone you know would consider being a kidney donor, please call the Parish Center at Many people who need transplants of organs and tissues cannot get them because of a shortage of donations. Every month, more than 2,000 new names are added to the national waiting list for organ transplants, and about 18 people die every day while waiting for an organ transplant in the U.S. Organ and tissue donation helps others by giving them a second chance at life. 3 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Found" is a great word! It can have so many levels of meaning. Obviously it means having recovered something that was misplaced or lost. My aged mother is forever "finding" her glasses, even though they are usually on the table under the mail or the newspaper. Found can also mean to begin something or to set something up. The parish I worship at, like the one you belong to, had a founding pastor who organized the beginning of community in response to the bishop's request or the call of the people in the area. Anyone who works with molten material also knows that to found means casting that metal or glass object in a place called (of course!) a foundry. Jesus tells the story today of a woman who has ten coins and lost one. All three meanings of the word "found" are part of parable. The coin was found (that is cast) by a treasury, either the emperor's or that of a local realm. Having lost the coin, the woman found (that is recovered) it after searching the whole house. The recovery of the coin occasioned the founding (that is the initiation) of her rejoicing. The parable of the lost coin is truly about founding. Like that coin, we may be lost at times, but God finds us. He recovers us from whatever has separated us from him, whether that is sin, the distractions of life, or the fragility of our faith. In finding us, God renews us. He remolds us and forms us more and more into people with a lively faith. Like that molten metal that is founded into a coin, the love of God purifies us and remakes us anew, casting us into the image of Christ. By asking God's forgiveness and by praying for a renewal of faith, we gain a new foundation and so can begin again, living the way Christ has taught us, filled with the love of God and love for our brothers and sisters. Holy Father s Prayer Intention for September We pray that people today, often overwhelmed by noise, may rediscover the value of silence and listen to the voice of God and their brothers and sisters. We also pray that Christians suffering persecution in many parts of the world may by their witness be prophets of Christ's love. Word of Life The threat to religious freedom is larger than any single case or issue. It has its roots in the growing secularism of our culture, a secularism that seeks to marginalize the Church from culture and society. [ ] The right to religious freedom is founded upon the intrinsic dignity of the human person. This is an issue of justice since the human person has a right to religious freedom. As Catholics, we must not waver in our defense of this sacred right. Most Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, The Right to Religious Freedom, Today s Catholic News, June 26, 2013 Weekly Scripture Quote Living Christ's Mission: Maria and Roberto Maria was a simple, hard-working woman who had escaped the war in El Salvador. She requested that I accompany her to translate the test results from the doctor treating her treasured four-year-old son, Roberto. Roberto's angelic face belied the debilitating disease that had attacked his body from birth. The doctor painfully presented the test results in a devastating litany of "will nevers": Roberto will never be able to walk, talk, reason, and be independent. Maria turned to me with eyes pleading to understand his English words. While her heart cried when I translated the results, Maria looked at Roberto resting on her lap, with endearing love. Clearly, Maria saw past his disease to the beauty of her son. Regardless of whatever problems the future would hold, she would be at his side. Maria then requested that I ask the doctor a question. " Él va a poder sonreír un día?" "One day will he be able to smile?" Jesus shares our human nature. He knows firsthand that all of us, like Roberto, suffer from incapacities and sin. Like Maria, his response is not to turn away from us because of our faults and failings, but to embrace us and remain always at our sides. He gave his life for us not because of our perfection, but because of our need for redemption. Jesus wants us to be able to smile eternally in the boundless joy of heaven. Stewardship is founded on gratitude. How grateful are we to our God who sees past our many shortcomings to our beauty? Do we thank our God who has planned from the beginning of time a paradise for us all? How committed are we, his stewards, to see past the failings of others and give them our lives, as he gave his for all of us? May God bless you! 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc 3 Four Key Elements of Faith (Part IV): Lessons from Mary In the last segment of this four part series, we contemplate the Assumption of Mary and learn more deeply four key elements of faith as elaborated in The Light of Faith, the encyclical from Pope Francis. We can feel ourselves so weak and inconstant before a privilege as great as our faith. God, who is Mercy, has shown Himself always attracted to weakness, to littleness, to the poor ones. In our poverty we have a special claim to His love. Thus He has provided us with a way to this faith, which is more than knowledge, this faith which is life, which is engagement with a God who walks with us and transforms us, this faith which radiates from us into the world. Faith needs a setting in which it can be witnessed to and communicated for transmitting a purely doctrinal content, an idea might suffice, or perhaps a book, or the repetition of a spoken message. But what is communicated in the Church, what is handed down in her living Tradition, is the new light born of an encounter with the true God, a light which touches us at the core of our being and engages our minds, wills and emotions, opening us to relationships lived in communion. There is a special means for passing down this fullness, capable of engaging the entire person, body and spirit, interior life and relationships with others. It is the sacraments, celebrated in the Church s liturgy (no. 40) Sr. Kathryn J. Hermes, FSP Daughters of Saint Paul Strength for Your Day Blog
