3 Religious Education Program We are down to our last few weeks of class for Grades K-8 for the school year. A few updates and reminders as we wind down the year: Rice Bowl boxes should be returned this week. All of the funds that are collected will be sent to Catholic Relief Services to help provide food for those most in need. Registration forms will not be handed out at the final class. We will update you on the process for registering for classes for in the next week. We will be sending an home and posting the information here and in the bulletin. Formal Religious Education should begin in Grade 1 and continue through Confirmation in Grade 9. Faith formation deepens each year, so that by the time our students are preparing for Confirmation, they will have gained the knowledge needed for them to live as true disciples of Christ. We are looking for volunteers for next year. We need your help to keep our program strong. Each year, we are looking to do more for our children, but we need your help. Being a catechist gives you the opportunity to deepen your own faith and live out your call to share the good news of Jesus with the children of our parish. You do not need to be a theologian, you just need a servants heart and a desire to serve, we can help you with the rest! If you are nervous about doing it alone ask a friend and you can teach together as a team! Social Concerns Team St. Mary's is planning an evening to find out more about participating in the Archdiocesan plan to help resettle refugees. Call the parish center or b.mauro1@yahoo.com to be on the social concerns list. K of C Rosary Service St. Mary's Council # 2346 invite all members of our parish to join Father Thomas Nicastro, our chaplain, and our members in recitation of the Rosary to honor our Blessed Virgin Mary on Monday night, May 8, 2017, at 7:00 pm at our Knights of Columbus Hall (150 Chestnut Street, Nutley). Refreshments to follow. We look forward to your participation as we celebrate the month of Mary and the rosary. Final Report on the 3rd Annual Otto Allen Beyer Memorial Dinner German Knight 2017 The January 28th Knights of Columbus fundraiser exceeded all expectations. Guests were serenaded by the St. Mary s Family Mass Band, whose members are: Brothers Bill Arndt and Rob Ciocco, with Andrew DeCotiis-Mauro, and John Loprieato. Brother James Kosior refreshed the guests with their choice of three draught beers, wine and/or soda. The tables were decorated with patriotic colors, donated bottles of Poland Spring Water and Terra Chips and with Information about the VFW Support Program that the memorial would benefit. Grand Knight John Wlosek welcomed all and introduced the council Chaplin, Father Tom Nicastro, who said the opening prayer and blessed the food. The guests were served fine German food by Joseph, Katie and Liz Mauro. All are past Council Scholarship Award (EAC) recipients and the grandchildren of Mr. Beyer. The menu consisted of German favorites like Kassler Rippchen (smoked pork chops), Weiner schnitzel (breaded pork cutlets) knockwurst, bratwurst, German frankfurters, sauerkraut, sweet and sour red cabbage, german and regular potato salads, brown gravy with egg noodles and also classics like chicken francese, chicken murphy, stuffed shells and penne with vodka sauce. Dessert was a fine apple filled crumb cake, assorted cookies and coffee or tea. The food was prepared by Brothers Noel Connor, Bill Waddleton and Kevin Mauro. Thank you to Brother Phil Urso and those other Knights that helped with the hall. During the evening, Grand Knight John Wlosek presented a $ check to the council s sponsored seminarian, Diego Navarro. This annual stipend is to be used to offset his expenses while becoming a priest. As I stated in the opening, the event was a charitable financial success. Ticket donations exceeded expectations and the council also donated $ towards the effort. A check for $ 3, was sent in honor of Otto Allen Beyer and the council to the VFW Veterans and Military Support Program. Over the past 3 years, our council has donated over $6,250 to veteran programs. Respectfully submitted, Kevin J. Mauro PGK German Knight 2017 Event Chairman 656 Page 4

5 Last summer, a reading from Paul's letter to the Hebrews inspired my writing a series of 3 bulletin articles. Paul's counsel; that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses prompted me to consider: "Who is St. Mary s? My conclusion was a paraphrase of the words of St. Theresa of Calcutta: St. Mary's is women and men, lay and ordained, living and deceased who have made a great impact "by doing many little things with great love." The liturgies of this past weekend caused me to return to these thoughts. On Holy Thursday twelve parishioners were selected to represent our ministries and have their feet washed. I began playing the processional hymn and heard the voices of the singers coming clearly out of the speaker set right behind the organ bench. Simultaneously, another sound, equally strong began to compete for my attention. It was the many "little" voices of the congregation coming together to make one great sound. As the weekend unfolded I came to see Easter as a great Christian family reunion. Present were: The babies God has blessed us with in the past year. (A few of whom wearing bunny ears). The beautiful girls in bonnets and boys in shirts and ties who were babies of Easters past. The wonderful young men and ladies who served on the altar or choir loft. The compendium of greeters, lectors and eucharistic ministers from each of our 5 weekend liturgies (some of whom served together at the Sacred Triduum). Just like in every family, there were new friends and family members we haven't seen in a while and some who may have been away this Easter. All of these, including you and me are St. Mary's. Together we are called and doing great things in Christ's name as we do many little things with great love. Blessed to be serving at St. Mary's, P.S.: I am grateful for the welcome extended to myself and the singers by those who regularly attend the 7:30 a.m. liturgy. It was wonderful to be with you! Care Ministry Update Maria Biancheri, an employee of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark will be making a presentation on the Archdiocesan plan to resettle refugees to the NJ area. The event will take place in Walsh Hall Wednesday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. Our care ministry will also be cooking at the Nutley-Belleville care kitchen on Saturday, April 22. b.mauro1@yahoo.com to be on our care ministry list. Knights of Columbus Membership The St. Mary s Knights of Columbus Council #2346 always welcomes new members to join. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Men s fraternal organization dedicated to upholding its four key principles: charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Those who are interested in more information should call the Council at (973) or stmaryscouncil2346@gmail.com. Meetings are held the 2 nd and 4 th Mondays at 7:30 PM. The Knights of Columbus Hall is also available for rental; please call with any inquires. The Hall is a great space for repasts, anniversaries and baby/bridal showers! 656 Page 5
