Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. These words we speak at Mass prior to receiving Holy Communion speaks volumes to us as we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi (the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ) our Lord and God. The Feast celebrates the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist; body, blood, soul, and divinty. This is not just symbolic for us as Catholics, but a doctrine of reality in which each time we celebrate Mass, we pray that what we consume may consume us completely. This Feast was primarily due to the petition of a thirteenth-century Augustinian Nun, Juliana of Liege. Juliana also petitioned the learned Dominican Hugh of St-Cher, Jacques Pantaléon (Archdeacon of Liège who later became Pope Urban IV) and Robert de Thorete, Bishop of Liège. At that time, bishops could order feasts in their dioceses, so in 1246 Bishop Robert convened a synod and ordered a celebration of Corpus Christi to be held each year thereafter. St. Thomas Aquinas composed a new liturgy for the feast. This liturgy is used as a votive Mass of the Blessed Sacrament, which could be celebrated even on days of the liturgical year other than that of the solemnity. Aquinas composed for Vespers of Corpus Christi, Pange Lingua. The last two verses of the Pange Lingua are also used as a separate hymn, the Tantum Ergo, which is sung at the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. O Salutaris Hostia, is another hymn sung at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Aquinas also composed the propers for the Mass of Corpus Christi. When Pope Pius V revised the General Roman Calendar of the Tridentine Calendar, Corpus Christi was one of only two "feasts of devotion" that he kept, the other being Trinity Sunday. From 1849 until 1969, a separate Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ was assigned originally to the first Sunday in July. Now we celebrate these feasts as one since whether we receive the consecrated host or the consecrated wine we receive Christ fully under either species. Refreshments will be served. Bethlehem Handicrafts Christian artisans from Bethlehem, the birthplace of our Lord, seek your support through the sale of their handmade olive wood products. These religious articles will be displayed in the church vestibule after this weekend s masses. Your support can and will make a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ who live in Bethlehem. Rosary Society Baby Shower Don t forget... Saint Mary s Rosary Society will be holding their Annual Baby Shower to benefit the Good Counsel Homes Shelters this Mon., June 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Cafeteria. We hope you will join us for this enjoyable evening! Parish Super 50/50 Raffle Congratulations to all the winners! Thank You from the Raffle Committee We have just concluded another successful Super 50/50 Raffle. The three lucky winners are as follows: 1 st Prize (25%) Regina McGuire $5, nd Prize (15%) Lillian Kassel $3, rd Prize (10%) Walter Kyzima $2, (All three winners are Saint Mary s parishioners) The raffle had several challenges this year. Our super salesman, John Colamarco, retired leaving a void. Our challenge was to find equally super sales people. The following stepped forward and used their time and talents to help make the raffle a success: Jim Paulson, Joe French, Mary & Jim Smith, Pat Rush, Allen Beyer, Joe Glogoza, Kim Donohoe, Gen McCutcheon, Joe Jannuzzelli, John Saar. I was very fortunate to have such giving people come forward. My deepest gratitude to you all. Over the years, I have been blessed with many helpers. This year I was fortunate to have the assistance of quite an unassuming individual who did the job without fanfare; Joanne Dunleavy, thank you for making my job and life easier. The sale in the vestibule was manned by many reliable people; Ellen Corrigan, Mike Cox and Margaret Peters who were faithful and successful every weekend. Last, the parish receptionist, Caroline Brooks, whose daily work was added to by mailing requested raffle books, a hearty thank you. We at St. Mary s are unaware of the hidden treasures that man the Parish Center daily. The staff makes our work easier by their giving nature. Thank you to all. Holy Father s Prayer Intention for June That believers may recognize in the Eucharist the living presence of the Risen One who accompanies them in daily life. Annulment Information Evening An Annulment Information Evening is scheduled for Wed., June 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Saint Bernard of Clairvaux/Saint Stanislaus Kostka (368 Sumner Avenue, Plainfield). A staff member of the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Newark will provide basic information about annulments; the requirements for annulments and how to begin the process of petitioning for an annulment. There will be an opportunity for questions at the end of the session. Preregistration is not necessary, but for directions, please call the parish at RETIRED???
