6 July 31, 2011 The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 PLAYGROUND ON THE PARISH GROUNDS As you know, we have a small outdoor playground at St. Matthew s. Each year, the ground covering has to be refilled as the small chips blow away and become depleted. In addition, the slide and swing set is worn, very splintery and in poor condition. Hence, we need to replace them and install a safe, permanent ground covering. We, including Father Hewes, have looked at various playgrounds and have had bids to do the job. As we try to be responsible stewards, we want the most durable and the most cost effective equipment. To achieve this, we need your help. We appreciate any help that you donate for this. No amount is too small or too big! We have about 4,800 registered families. If each family contributed $10, we can do this. However, we ll surely accept more than $10 a family! It is when everyone tries to contribute, as small as it may be, that we can achieve our goals. I m hoping for a 100% response. Please make your checks out to St. Matthew s. Of course, we ll also accept cash. Please put PLAYGROUND on the outside envelope. Truly, you the Parishioners of St. Matthew s have always been very generous and have always cherished our children. We are very grateful to you. The beautiful painting above the playground pictures Jesus bringing the children to Him. My hope and prayer is that the children come to our Church and also enjoy the playground and other facilities at our Parish Center. Thank you and God bless you, Sister Kay McCarthy THANK YOU FOR THE FOOD DONATIONS As soon as a request for food was placed in the Bulletin, you responded so generously. We now have enough food to assist the many people and families who come to us for food and other basic needs. Truly, you the Parishioners of St. Matthew s are wonderful and are always willing to help when we ask you. It is because of you that we can assist others. In one of his Encyclical s as far back as 1988, Pope John Paul II wrote the following. Because of our love of preference for the poor, we cannot but embrace the immense multitudes of the hungry, the needy, the homeless, those without medical care and above all those without hope of a better future. It is impossible not to take account of the existence of these realities. To ignore them would mean becoming like the rich man who pretended not to know the beggar Lazarus lying at his gate. Thank you and God bless you for being so kind and compassionate to our poor people. You not only didn t ignore them but you also donated abundantly to them. Sister Kay McCarthy The next Respect Life meeting will be August 16, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mirror Room. Everyone is welcome. Don t Forget Your Baby Bottle! On the weekend of August 6 th & 7 th, Saint Matthew will be hosting a Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit The Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center is a crisis pregnancy center that counsels women and men who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. They provide maternity housing, medical care, referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. We are asking that you pick up a baby bottle and fill it with your change. Most importantly, we are asking you to recite the prayer on the bottle. The prayer attached to the bottle will enable the counselors at The Life Center to say just the right words a mother or father may need to hear. It especially opens a mother s heart to accept the truth. We believe these prayers lead abortion-minded women to call The Life Center in the first place. Let us pray with our whole heart for the lives of our unborn children.

8 July 31, 2011 The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 8 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the Gospel, Jesus says: There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves, and taking the five loaves and two fish, he blest them and gave them to the disciples to feed the crowd. Like the story of the loaves and fish, this month through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families, providing food and money for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You! The Next Family Rosary Group meeting will be on August 12th at 8:30 p.m. in the Chapel All are welcome SAVE THE DATE...BLOOD DRIVE July 31, 2011 Our Blood Drive is soon.
