3 June 19, Page 3 FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHRIST The great fifty-day celebration of Easter has concluded, as have the feasts honoring the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized "have clothed yourselves with Christ" (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church's baptism ritual when we sing, "You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized." This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today's Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, follow in the footsteps of Christ. A prayer for All Graduates HAPPY FATHER S DAY TO ALL Fathers, father-in-law, grand-fathers, godfathers, husbands, sons, uncles, brothers, friends, or anyone who will be taking the role of a father in someone s life. 4 The Beginning June 19, Page 4 SUMMER TRIVIA SERIES James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, designated Reverend Michael Collins to shepherd the Catholics of Santa Ana in1962. Fr. Michael came as an Assistant Pastor at Incarnation Parish of Glendale and St. Gregory of Los Angeles. He was now ready for the role of Pastor which meant transforming a ten acre tomato patch at Euclid and McFadden into a living Faith Community. It would take time to build the facilities, but that didn t mean mass couldn t begin in a rented facility. Mass indeed was held at the Garden Grove Elks Lodge as the first two school buildings of St. Barbara were built. In September of 1963, the first classes began in the two buildings. The west end of the south building served as the parish church for two years. The rectory which started on Wisteria Avenue moved to Maxine Avenue just as Fr. Michael s first assistant arrived. At that time he was the recently ordained Fr. Frank Buckman. The new Church was opened on September 24, 1965, fol lowed by the Rectory and a parish Hall- Gymnasium. In the background of faith development was the feed to provide for sportsmanship and physical development. St. Barbra has facilities baseball, football, soccer, basketball and volleyball. A Parent s Association works to support the Catholic School Program. Questions for the week The Early Years Fr. Michael eventually added a second helper, Reverend Erwin Bauer, SVD. The team of priests oversaw the development of the faith-life of the parish through a Catholic School program. Religious Education and adult formation classes. The Poor Clare Missionary Sisters were the first teaching Order at St. Barbara School and our first Principal was Sister Rose Mary Uribe. The Early Years continues 1. 5 Chúa Nhật Năm C Tuần XII Phúc Âm: Lc 9, "Thầy là Đấng Kitô của Thiên Chúa. Con Người phải chịu nhiều đau khổ". Suy Niệm: Ngày xưa, Đức Giêsu đã hỏi các môn đệ Ngài là ai đối với họ. Chắc chắn hôm nay Ngài cũng đang đặt câu hỏi đó với mỗi người chúng ta. Chúng ta thử nghĩ xem, chúng ta sẽ trả lời Ngài như thế nào? Chúng ta có tin rằng Đức Giêsu là Thiên Chúa, là Đấng làm chủ cuộc đời chúng ta không? Chúng ta có sẵn sàng sống cho Ngài và theo Ngài không? Đức Giêsu có chiếm vị trí quan trọng trong cuộc sống của chúng ta không? Hay chỉ có vật chất, lợi lộc, hưởng thụ mới là điều quan trọng? Cầu Nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giêsu, thế giới ngày nay đang đưa con người vào cuộc sống tiến bộ vượt bậc: giàu sang, văn minh, hưởng thụ, tiện nghi... thế nên, con người mải mê chạy theo nó và quên mất Chúa, loại Chúa ra khỏi cuộc đời của mình. Xin Chúa thức tỉnh và canh tân nhân loại chúng con. Chỉ có Chúa mới là hạnh phúc đích thực mà trần gian này không thể cho chúng con được. Xin cho cuộc sống của chúng con luôn hướng về Chúa trong tâm tình yêu mến, phụng sự và tín thác. Amen. Thánh Rômuađô, Viện phụ Vác thập giá của mình? Khi đọc bài Phúc âm ngày hôm nay, để đi theo Chúa Kitô, ta phải từ bỏ chính mình và hằng ngày, vác thập giá của mình mà theo... Chương trình gì mà buồn thế! Chúng ta chớ quên rằng khi ta loan báo về Chúa Giêsu, trước hết đó là một Tin mừng. Nhưng rồi, Chúa muốn nói gì với ta khi Ngài mời gọi ta từ bỏ bản thân mình? Chắc chắn không phải là từ bỏ hạnh phúc của mình: Thiên Chúa không phải là một Đấng tạo hoá tai quái, thúc đẩy chúng ta lựa chọn một cách thiếu cân nhắc điều khiến ta phải buồn lòng và đau khổ. Từ bỏ chính mình, trước hết là từ bỏ phần tối tăm nơi ta, nó ngăn cản chúng ta trở nên điều mà Chúa mong muốn chúng ta trở thành. Chúng ta biết rằng tâm hồn ta bị giằng co: chúng ta muốn yêu mến nhưng ta cứ hay dấn mình vào ngõ cụt của lòng ích kỷ. Từ bỏ chính mình là ra khỏi bản thân, học cách không xem mình là trung tâm, vì chỉ có sự chuyển hướng sang tha nhân mới cho chúng ta tìm được chính mình. Vác thập giá của mình là chấp nhận đi con đường gian nan của sự chuyển hướng về phía tha nhân, nơi Chúa ẩn mình và chờ đợi ta. Bấy giờ, thập giá chúng ta đang mang sẽ trở nên cây nở hoa trái phục sinh của chính chúng ta. SEGUIR LOS PASOS A CRISTO La gran celebración de cincuenta días de la Pascua ha concluido, al igual que las fiestas en honor a la Santísima Trinidad y al Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. La semana pasada comenzamos el largo tramo del Tiempo Ordinario que nos llevará hasta el final de noviembre. San Pablo nos dice hoy que los que han sido bautizados "se han revestido de Cristo" (Gálatas 3:27). Este mensaje es inspirador y al mismo tiempo nos alecciona, ya que en el Evangelio de hoy, vamos al centro de lo que significa estar revestidos de Cristo. El Señor nos dice, "si alguno quiere acompañarme, que no se busque a sí mismo, que tome su cruz de cada día y me siga" (Lucas 9:23). Durante las veinte y dos semanas que siguen somos llamados a tomar la cruz y, con san Lucas como guía, seguir en los pasos a Cristo. Ellos se espantaron creyendo que era un fantasma de algún pescador pero él los calmó diciendo " Ánimo!, que soy yo; no teman". Debió ser impactante ver al Señor caminar sobre las aguas, especialmente en una época donde las aguas venían consideradas como el caos. En varias partes de latinoamerica los fieles celebran a distintos santos con procesiones de barcos sobre ríos o mares. En el Puerto de Paita, Perú se llevan a los santos Pedro y Pablo en una procesión acuática. San Pedro, que fue pescador, está en casa sobre la barca, ya que normalmente son barcas de pescadores las que forman la procesión. Esta procesión reconoce el caos del mar reconociendo a los pescadores, que durante el año perdieron sus vidas en el mar, con guirnaldas lanzadas a la bahía. BARBARA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR The 5th 8th graders presented their science projects at the science fair. The students were required to explain the projects, show how they ran their experiments, and discuss the results. The adults and students who came to see were allowed to ask questions and do some hands-on experimenting of their own from racing 5th grades cars, to exploding balloons and bottles, and even the younger students playing with samples of slime and making airplanes, everyone had a great time learning! Great job, students!
