2 May Jesus touch us! As Jesus goes through one of these crowds today there is a woman who has hemorrhaged for 12 years. Imagine the money she has spent and the pain she has experienced at the hands of countless doctors as she has searched for a healing in vain. From her house she hears a loud crowd. Interested she goes into the street to see what the commotion is about. Someone tells her a miracle worker is in their midst! Today it still takes courage for us to reach out to Jesus. People tell us Jesus is not real. People tell us religion is for the weak minded. It takes courage to reach out for the healing touch of Jesus. This woman is our model of reaching out to Jesus with courage, despite what those around us think. Do we have the courage to reach out to Jesus? If we do perhaps we will hear the same words he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction." We also see the healing of the daughter of Jairus. He is a synagogue official and perhaps he sees Jesus as a threat to the synagogue. He may even see Jesus as an adversary. But his daughter is at the point of death so he is desperate. He goes to Jesus. It is so important that he does not send a messenger. He goes personally. Jesus goes with him to the house where they are informed that the daughter has died. Jesus goes in and brings her back to life. There is a lesson in the story. It is especially a lesson for parents. Parents are called to bring their children to Jesus. Some parents choose not to do this. Some parents try to lead their children to Jesus but the children rebel. St. Mark shows us what to do when we are desperate; bring Jesus to our children! It may even appear to us that our children are dead. Perhaps they mired deeply in an addiction, perhaps they are living a sinful lifestyle, or perhaps they are wrapped up in the world of materialism. Even if they appear dead Jesus can break through. Jesus said to the father and would say to us, "Fear is useless; what is needed is trust." Have faith that Jesus can heal. Have faith that Jesus can move mountains. Have faith that Jesus can bring the dead back to life. "The child is not dead but asleep." And they ridiculed him "little girl, I say to you, arise!" The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. You may feel like giving up. You may have the crowds tell you to give up. "Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?" Jesus would say, "Do not be afraid; just have faith." Jesus can do the same in the lives of our children today. Certainly he can bring physical healing but more importantly he can bring spiritual healing. We have heard that we need to bring our children to Jesus but sometimes we need to bring Jesus to our children. When they are too weak to ask for him themselves we can bring Jesus to them. A good way to do this is by offering our Holy Communion for our children. Perhaps we have grown children who have fallen away from the church. Each time we go to communion we can offer the graces of that communion for their soul. In this way we imitate Jairus who came into the presence of Jesus and asked nothing for himself but only a healing for his daughter. Our Lord is ready to respond to this type of selfless prayer. You can be sure your prayers will be heard. The answer may not come as quickly as you would like. Imagine the horror of this father when he returns home and is told his daughter has died. He thinks Jesus has come too late. As Jesus brings this girl back to life he reminds us that no situation is so dead that he cannot work in it. Through these two stories of healing, St. Mark shows us that Jesus is our hope, Jesus is our rock. The woman with a hemorrhage desires only to touch Jesus. The synagogue official wants to bring Jesus to his daughter. They are both at desperate moments of their lives and they know that only Jesus will bring peace. This is the lesson of St. Mark. Whatever your situation today, no matter how seemingly hopeless, Jesus is the answer. "Fear is useless what is needed is trust." -Fr. Tim McKeown July 4 Mass will be at Noon. Chris Hassel! We are excited to have you at St. Francis Xavier and Nativity of Our Lady! Prayerful, Careful Driving Summer is a big time for vacations and road trips. The Sacred Heart Auto League promotes careful, prayerful driving. By the front doors are some envelopes with a medal for your car and a prayer card and some information about the Auto League. You may decide to enroll/join the Sacred Heart Auto League but there is no obligation to do so. Be safe on the roads this summer! Fr. Tim will lead a trip to the Holy Land from March If you are interested in going please take a flyer from the back table. The cost of the trip will be $3,899 from Atlanta and will include time in Jerusalem and time around the Sea of Galilee. 150 th Anniversary We still have golf shirts available in men s and women s sizes. We will have a table in front of the church on Sunday. Shirts are $30 each. First Friday Adoration is scheduled for July 6th in the Church from 2 to 8 p.m. Please sign-up for a one hour slot. 6 St. Francis Xavier Catholic School is looking for a parttime school counselor and art teacher. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): We had a great catechetical year and are now on summer break. We will begin the year on Aug 19 th. Registrations will begin next month, so please watch the bulletin. PSR meets Sunday Mornings during the academic school year, 9:30 10:40am, for children Pre-K - 8 th Grade. We could use a few teachers and substitutes. You need not be a theologian, just someone practicing the Faith and willing to share that Faith. Come join us in spreading the Good News of Jesus to our young people. First Eucharist: Normally received in the 2 nd Grade. Parents should contact the Director of Religious Education. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacraments. Confirmation: Normally received in the 8 th Grade. Parents should contact Director of Religious Education. Anointing of the Sick: Please contact the pastor or church office to schedule. St Francis Xavier School is asking for donations of supplies. In the upcoming weeks and apple tree will be placed on the main bulletin board of the Church. If you would like to donate an item or two, take an apple and return it with the items you are donating. Donation lists will also be available on the tables for people who would like to donate more than 1 item. Please place your donations under the back tables of the Church or in the boxes designated Apple Tree. INQUIRY CLASS FOR NON-CATHOLICS Do you go to Church with your spouse and are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith? Do you have questions about what Catholics believe? Is the Catholic Church a right fit for you and your family? Consider joining us for RCIA Inquiry Classes beginning Monday, September 10.
