3 In November, We Remember Them Death can easily consume a family with grief and sadness, but for Catholics, death is also a time of remembrance and communal celebration of life. The month of November has been held as the month when we pray for our faithful departed and for the souls in purgatory. The first two days of November are marked by two special feast days, All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2). During the month of November, the bulletin boards and the tables will be decorated so as to commemorate those who have passed. People who have passed away still need our prayers. We know that the souls in purgatory rely on our intercessory prayers to assist them. Our prayers help them rest in the peace of God. As Christian Catholics, we use physical signs to convey something of the interior and spiritual life. The Sacraments are just that, physical signs that point to and convey a spiritual reality. Carrying this over, during the month of November, we will have the opportunity to write the names of those who have passed within the Book of the Dead; write their names on little cards to place on the bulletin boards and/ or bring in a copy of the picture of someone who has passed away. Last year, I know that for myself, having the names on the boards on either side of me as I walked into the church gave me a surreal sense of those who have died were still present. As I looked at a few names, I was still able to pray for them. I added my own family members on the board...and yet, it was like these other faithful departed were also part of a family that I didn't know. I was able to gather from various people that even though they wrote the names of the people that they knew, they were moved to also pray for those others they didn't know on the board. It united us, in a way, to pray for the eternal peace of our dead. This year, I asked if we could embrace a little more of the Mexican with respect to All Souls Day. All Souls Day, or rather "Dia de los Muertos" (literally day of the dead) will be celebrated on a Wednesday. A little altar decorated with marigold flowers; candles; vigil candles; Mexican sugar skulls; images of some of the deceased; and holy images of the saints will be present that Wednesday night. The decor will be present at the entrance on the bulletin boards and the tables. We would like to honor and remember the faithful departed in two ways: by writing their names down but also by posting a photo of them. We would like to invite the community to participate in writing the names down on little cards and leaving us a copy of a photo of someone who has passed away. It is my hope that we will be able to keep our loved ones in mind as we walk into mass to pray. -Fr. We will post any pictures that you would like on the board. There will be a box on the back table for you to place your pictures. Please put the name of the deceased, your name and phone number on the back of the picture. If you just want their name on the board, there will be colored paper squares available for you to write on. Southern Cross We have a Diocesan biweekly newspaper called the Southern Cross. As a registered member of the parish it should be delivered to your home. The yearly subscription is $15. We are billed from the diocese for this. With 600 families our bill this year will be $9,000. Each year we take up a collection to defray that cost. Please take a moment and make out a check to SFX for $15 and memo it Southern Cross. Thank you. The first National Collection for the Archdiocese of Military Services was timed to coincide with Veterans Day November 2013 and raised more than $8.2 million from collections taken by 179 dioceses. The second National Collection will be taken in most dioceses and parishes across the country at weekend Masses November 5-6, There are many organizations that support U.S. military and their families, but there is no other diocese or nonprofit organization like the AMS. The AMS provides the same pastoral care and services as any other Catholic diocese, to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Guam, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop's collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is slated for November 23-24, the weekend before Thanksgiving. The collection is taken up in parishes and dioceses nationwide. The theme of this year's collection is: "Defend Human Dignity. Take Poverty Off the Map." This annual national collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD's anti-poverty grants and education programs. These programs enable lowincome people to join together to identify problems, make decisions and improve their communities. For over 40 years, CCHD has funded organizations that address the root causes of poverty, providing lasting solutions for the future. Pew update: We are working on picking out the stain color for the new pews. The company rep will come for a visit with recommendations. He will also see if the old pews have resale value. If not, we will look at donating them to a local church. We will soon have a sample pew to display in the church. Thus far we have collected about half of the cost of the pews through people who have sponsored a pew. Please consider making a gift of $50, 100, 200 or 500 to help complete the project. The current church building was dedicated in December It will be nice to have new pews for the next 50 years!

Dear All, As we continue to recover and assist people in our own Diocese from the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew, we are mindful of the people of Haiti and areas of our country which were devastated by this hurricane. To assist in these efforts, the USCCB has asked that each diocese take up a collection. In the Diocese of Savannah, we will take up the collection on the weekend of November This should give each parish time to notify the parishioners about the collection.
