2 Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. Today is also the end of the Christmas season and we will start Ordinary Time tomorrow. Though this does not mean we should not continue to celebrate the meaning of Christmas in our lives each and every day throughout the year. However, today we focus on Christ s baptism; his baptism in the Jordan river by John the Baptist. We have been hearing from John the Baptist at various points in Advent and Christmas and now we have John not only pointing our Christ but baptizing Christ in the waters of the Jordan. In this we see the establishment of the Sacrament of Baptism. Jesus shows us the way we are to follow, so that we can enter into eternal life. As St. Augustine said, The Lord desired to be baptized, so that he might freely proclaim through his humility what for us was a necessity. In baptism, though for many of us we are too young to remember our baptisms, the priest or deacon blesses the water with a long prayer. The prayer reflects how important water is in the history of our faith, how important it is to our faith, and what it means for our faith. The prayer over the baptismal water begins as follows: Father, you give us grace through sacramental signs, which tell us of the wonders of your unseen power. In Baptism we use your gift of water, which you have made a rich symbol of the grace you give us in this sacrament. At the very dawn of creation your Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the wellspring of all holiness. The waters of the Great flood you made a sign of the waters of Baptism, that make an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness. Through the waters of the Red Sea you led Israel out of slavery, to be an image of God s holy people, set free from sin by Baptism. In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. Your Son willed that water and blood should flow from his side as he hung upon the cross. After his resurrection he told his disciples: Go out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We see through this prayer that water has been a sign of freedom, of liberating from sin. Baptism frees us from Original Sin and brings us into life in Christ. We enter into the Body of Christ in baptism. As St. Leo the Great said, Thanks to the Sacrament of Baptism you have been turned into a temple of the Holy Spirit. Through our baptism, entering into the Body of Christ we enter into the responsibilities that we have as a member of that Body, as being temples of the Holy Spirit. To, Go out and teach all nations, to live out our faith in the world, to follow the commandments, and to bring others to the faith by our words and our actions. We are called to live out the faith, the faith that we profess in each Mass when we say the Creed, the faith that, for most of us, our parents professed during our baptism, the faith that we professed at our own Confirmation. We live our faith out each and every day so that at the end of our lives, as adopted sons and daughters of God through our baptism, we will be able to hear that which Christ heard spoken at his baptism in the Jordan. You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. That we are God s beloved Son or Daughter and that He is well pleased. The Knights of Columbus will host a blood drive on Sunday, January 13th from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Xavier Hall. Please consider giving a pint of your precious gift of life to others. Your donation will remain in the local community. Scheduling an appointment will ensure your time is respected. The Knights of Columbus will provide the volunteers needed for service. 5 School and Youth News Teens in the Spirit meets every Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with Mass to follow. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELI- GION (PSR): PSR meets Sunday Mornings during the academic school year, 9:30 10:40am, for children Pre-K - 8 th Grade. If you have not registered yet, please come over to the school and we will help you get your child registered for this new year. Call Deacon Larry- DRE , X14. PSR starts back this weekend, January 13th. January 28 to February 1 is Catholic Schools Week. We will be celebrating at the school, church and throughout the community. February 1 is Grandparents and Grand-friends day. This day includes a school tour and mass. We hope you can join us. January 27, from 2-4 P.M. and Wednesday, February 6 from 8:30-10:30 A.M. we will be holding school Open Houses. All are welcome and please help us by inviting families you know to come to SFX for our either open house event.
