First Saturday Mass will take place at 7:00 a.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel on June 4 (due the Priestly Ordination that day at the Cathedral). We have now reached 70% of our Bishop's Annual Appeal target. So far, 106 families have made a pledge. If you have not yet made a pledge please use the envelope in the pew or the back tables. Let's finish up our target in the month of June! May 30th is Memorial Day. Mass will be said at 8:00 a.m. The Mass intention is for Seminarian Chris on his journey to the Priesthood. 3 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ by Seminarian Chris Hassel Today we celebrate The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi. This celebration is a reminder of what we believe, that the bread and wine that is consecrated in the Eucharist becomes the Body and Blood of Christ Jesus; that Christ is truly present in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Eucharist was established by Jesus at the Last Supper and is a memorial of His Passion. The opening prayer for Mass today says, O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament have left us a memorial of your Passion, grant us, we pray, so to revere the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood that we may always experience in ourselves the fruits of your redemption. Christ left us a memorial of His Passion for us, which we partake in at every Mass. We believe that we receive the Body and Blood of Christ when we receive communion, not just bread and wine. That is why when we receive communion we respond Amen as members of the Body of Christ, who is the head. If you are the body and members of Christ, then it is your sacrament that is placed on the table of the Lord; it is your sacrament that you receive. To that which you are you respond Amen ( yes, it is true! ) and by responding to it you assent to it. For you hear the words, the Body of Christ and respond Amen. Be then a member of the Body of Christ that your Amen may true (CCC #1396). We respond Amen because we truly believe that we are receiving the Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ our Lord. And as the opening prayer for Mass today stated, in receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus we receive the graces of Christ s redemption. We receive the graces, the spiritual strength so that we can go out into the world bearing Christ s name to all we meet, because we are members of the Body of Christ. We, in receiving Christ in the Eucharist, have Christ within us, we are literally tabernacles for the Lord when we leave Mass. We carry Christ out into the world. And through our lives, our actions, and our deeds, we bring Christ to others in the lives we encounter. This year I have been greatly blessed by being part of this community here. You have provided me with amazing and challenging experiences; experiences that have helped me to grow and minister in ways that will help me now and in my future as a priest. Through the various ministries, programs, groups that make up this ministry I can see the Body of Christ, the CHURCH, working within this community in which we live. You all have shown me how this community receives the Body and Blood of Christ, the true presence, in the Eucharist and then how you then carry Christ out into the community, into the world, helping others, bringing others Christ, showing others through your own lives what it is to be Christians. This has made the year very special in my journey to the priesthood, continuing to confirm my vocation that the Lord has called me to. And though I am sad to leave, I look forward to continuing on so that I can come back and serve the Diocese after ordination. In moving on, many have asked me where and what I will do next or what is next for me on this journey. This summer I will take a little vacation to visit with my family and friends in June. At the end of June I will be working with both vocation camps that the diocese runs (it is not to late to sign up for those rising 7 th -12 th graders!). In July I will go to a program in San Antonio, Texas to continue to work on my Spanish, so in the future, I can better minister to all who are in the Diocese of Savannah. Later in August, I will return to the seminary, where I will continue to study for two more years. In May of 2017, Lord willing, I will be ordained a Deacon and in the spring of 2018, when I have completed my studies at the seminary, I will be ordained to the priesthood to serve the people of the Diocese of Savannah. I will be sure to let Fr. Tim know the dates and information as you are invited to both of those events! 4 DID YOU KNOW? The Catholic Church largely built Western Civilization. Since Peter and Paul targeted Rome as the center for the universal church, the church has provided theology, charity, morality, healthcare, science, art and progressively higher education to enable believers to evolve and unite to serve God and his people on earth. The Catholic Church is a home and family for everyone. A Knights of Columbus fact. The Diocese of Savannah priestly ordination will be held on Saturday June 4 at 10:00 a.m. in the Cathedral. All are welcome to attend. If you have never attended a priestly ordination it is a powerful experience. Vacation Bible School is scheduled for June 13-17, 9 am to 12 pm and is open to Pre-K thru graduated 5 th grade students. Participation fee is $10/child or maximum of $30/family with 3 or more children from the same family. Registration forms are located on the back table. Drop off completed forms in the church office or in the collection basket at Mass. Checks must be made out to SFX. On the memo line write VBS. New Pews Update After announcing the new pews the most common question I received was, Is it possible to sponsor a pew? The answer is yes, you may sponsor a pew in memory of someone (deceased) or in honor of someone (living). Currently we have 23 rows on each side making for 46 pews total. This total may be reduced some as we remove some pews to make some aisles accessible to wheelchairs. The suggested donation to sponsor a pew will be $1,000. In the next week I will mail out some specific information about donating for this project. I will also make information available at the church. 6 We celebrated the accomplishments of our 2016 parish graduates with cake and ice cream Wednesday, May 18 in the hall. We offered our 7 pm Mass for them and sent them off to their next adventure with a blessing. Congratulations to our graduates!
