I believe all of us are interested in going deeper on our spiritual journey. I had a spiritual director who used to say, If you are not holier when you go to bed at night then you were in the morning it was a wasted day! My last year in Rome I read an inspiring book called The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic. It examines how we pray, study, give and evangelize. I mentioned this at the October Knights of Columbus Meeting and the Council voted to purchase a book for each family at Nativity and St. Francis Xavier! The books will be arriving this week along with some study guides. We will have some opportunities within our churches to meet and study together. You also might choose to get with two or three friends and hold your own study group. I will have study questions available via the bulletin and the church websites. More information will be available next week. Please note that we are offering a pilgrimage down to the Shrine of Our Lady of Leche in St. Augustine on Thursday October 29. Please call the church office to reserve a slot! The bus will leave from St. Francis Xavier Church. This Sunday s Gospel speaks about suffering. Our sufferings have value. Padre Pio used to say, "Souls are purchased with the coins of suffering." The Church teaches that "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church." The illnesses we bear, the surgery we must undergo, seeing a loved one encounter an illness, a death in the family, these all have value when we offer them as a prayer and unite them with the sufferings of Jesus. Our sufferings are really like gold coins. They are valuable and we should not just let them fall away unused. Every aspect has significance in our life. The common cold, a long wait in line, or a broken car can become a prayer. St. Paul tells us in Colossians 1, "Even now I find my joy in the suffering I endure for you. In my own flesh I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ for the sake of his body, the church." Does suffering have value? We thank God for the 19 and 20 old young men and women who forfeited their youth and often their lives in foreign countries in the name of freedom and the men and women who serve our country now, often separated from their families, for religious sisters who have given up families that our families might be better, for the North American Martyrs who planted the first seeds of faith in our country before being killed by the Iroquois, for the mothers who carried us for nine months and suffered pains of labor, our parents who made sacrifices that we might have more, and most importantly for a 33 year old sinless man who died for our sins and his sinless mother who stood by him at the foot of the Cross. "Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days; Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53). -Fr. Tim McKeown

We are going to take a bus to the Shrine of Our Lady of Leche in St. Augustine, celebrate mass and have lunch and tour the Cathedral. Thursday Oct. 29: Depart the church at 9:00 a.m. and return by 6:00 p.m. Cost is $10 for the bus. Please reserve a spot with Ann at or sign up in the back of the Church. We will have our first Parish Nite of the fall on Wednesday, October 21st. What is Parish Nite? We are asked to bring a food dish to share to Xavier Hall by 5:15 p.m. (or whenever you can get away from work). We share a meal at 5:30. One of the priests will give a talk at 6:00. Those who wish can stay for 7 p.m. Mass. It is a time for food, fellowship and to learn about our Catholic Faith. It is also a great time to bring guests.

4 In lieu of the collection for World Mission Sunday, the second collection will be sent to aid or brothers and sisters in our neighboring Diocese of Charleston. The recent rain and flooding caused much damage and devastation. Everything collected, even that which comes in via the envelopes labeled for World Mission Sunday, will be sent to the Diocese of Charleston for flood relief. Thank you for your generosity. This annual fundraiser helps cover the cost of educating and enriching students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School. Your support helped us raise $ towards our trip to the National Catholic Youth Conference this November. Family Rosary Crusade. The pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe would like to visit your home. She travels through the year. The goal of the family rosary crusade is to promote praying the rosary in the homes. Pamphlets on how to pray are included. The image stays with your family for a week. When the week is up bring back Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Christian Formation Center. St. Maria Goretti From September to November of this year the major relics of St. Maria Goretti will make a pilgrimage to the United States. Named the Pilgrimage of Mercy, it is the first time that her body travels to the USA. While St. Maria is universally known as the Patroness of Purity, her greatest virtue was her unyielding forgiveness of her attacker even in the midst of horrendous physical suffering, a forgiveness that would completely convert him and set him on a path to personal holiness. We are an interdenominational group. No fees. All types of crafts and ideas are shared. The guild also provides: hats for preemies, hats for cancer patients, leg warmers and lap rugs for nursing homes. Anyone wishing to donate these items is greatly appreciated. Please purchase you raffle tickets from SFX! The Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) meets on Monday Evenings. Classes are relaxed and informational, providing an atmosphere where you can ask questions, discuss beliefs and discern if the Catholic faith is what you have been missing in your life. Perhaps you are a Catholic and wish to learn more about your Faith, come join us each week, or come to just those classes that pique your interest. Our next class is Monday, October 19, 7:00 8:30pm in the St Anne Room of Xavier Hall. Our topic is: Mary: Mother of the Redeemer.
