3 The Rich Man and Lazarus How often after a hurricane, fire or other disaster have we seen someone interviewed who says, I lost everything I own but I am just thankful that all of my family survived? We spend a lot of time thinking about material goods. Our homes are filled with catalogs and we shop on the Internet but in the end all of our possessions are worth nothing when compared to a single human life. How much are our possessions worth when compared to an eternal soul? That is the question of the Gospel this week. What an image Jesus paints in today s Gospel of the rich man and Lazarus. The Gospel today is meant to shake us out of complacency. The Gospel should always make us a bit uncomfortable but it is a high calling. It is always calling us to new heights. As we listen to today's Gospel we might be tempted to think how selfish and shortsighted the rich man was. Then we are trapped! We realize we are that rich man! Jesus tells these parables to shake us to the core of our feet. If we hear the Gospel and think it applies to someone else then we are like the Pharisees. We must stop and think how we treat those who are less fortunate. Are we even aware of them? There are many in need right in our own town. It is has been said that many of us are just one paycheck away from needing help. Do we know there are those in need right around us? Do we help them? God may move us to assist those in our own city or he may have blessed us to the extent that we can help others in far away lands. In the Gospel of Matthew we are told this will be a basis for our judgment. Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers you did it to me. When we help the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, ill, and prisoners we did it for Jesus. Quite literally Lazarus lives outside our door every day. We are called to be pro-active. To look around us, see who is in need, and give accordingly. Complacency creeps into our life and then attacks like a flash flood. This is most true of our spiritual lives. The devil loves nothing better than when we become complacent Catholics. Those who follow God cannot be complacent. We are warned of this by the prophet Amos, "Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches " What an image of complacency, lying upon beds of ivory! We can imagine ancient royalty lying on cool ivory while their servants bring them grapes and fan them. Is charity part of my monthly budget? This is where we are called to cut luxury out of our lives, to use our money for others instead of for self. Here are a few practical questions. Can I cut back on luxury in my life? Do I need the newest, fanciest items, with its accompanying payments? Do I spend more on my cable TV bill each month than I give to charity? Is there excess in my life that I can give away to help a family right now, excess clothes or furniture? Do I give to local charities? Do I contribute to St. Vincent de Paul Society? The rich man didn't do any of this. He lived for himself. When he died he realized the errors of his ways. How he longed to come back and tell others. He is told the people have the law and the prophets. The Word of God is there for us to heed. Abraham says that if they don't heed the Law and the Prophets they will not even heed one who rises from the dead. The sin of the man is not that he was rich. The sin was that he could not see Lazarus. He did not commit evil. He simply did nothing. His many possessions made him blind to others. He was complacent. Do we see the poor today? May our love for Jesus help us to see the needs of others this week. May we not be complacent but may we be loving and generous to those less fortunate. As we go out the doors of the church today may we remember that Lazarus is all around us. Will we see him this week? -Fr. Tim McKeown If your family would like to sign up to be gift bearers for a mass in October please sign up on the clipboard on the table in back of church. Coloring pages for young children are available on the back tables for the weekends. There is a new choice of books on the back table from our lending library.
