This week Jesus asks, Who do you say that I am? What is our view of God? Perhaps some of us see God as the cosmic scorekeeper who keeps track of the good and bad we do. Some see God as the judge who will be swift to punish any wrong. Others look to a God who is akin to a lovable grandfather who is full of love and forgiveness but a little naïve to the modern generation. This becomes manifested in how we live our lives. Some people go through life thinking, Because of the sin I have committed God could never love me. Others go through life with presumption saying, Jesus loves me no matter what I do. We cannot put God in a peg hole. God goes beyond our ability to categorize. We serve a God of justice and mercy, a God with a strict moral code, yet full of forgiveness. At times in our lives perhaps we have experienced God as authoritarian, benevolent, critical and distant. Today and throughout this week we should wrestle with this question, Who do you say that I am? Who is Jesus Christ? The answer to that question will determine why I get out of bed in the morning. Who is Jesus? His Hebrew name is Yeshua meaning God saves. This reveals his identity and mission. Over 500 times in the New Testament he is referred to as the Christ. This means the anointed one and the messiah. He is the Son of the Father, hence the Son of God. He is also the Son of Mary, hence fully human. He is fully divine and thoroughly human. He experienced all you and I do except for sin: he grew hungry and thirsty, he slept, he laughed, and he knew pain. His purpose? In the Creed we say, For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven. He came to redeem us. Most of his life was very plain; we refer to it as the hidden life or quiet years. He lived with Joseph and Mary and worked and prayed in the silence of Nazareth. The Catechism states, During the greater part of his life Jesus shared the condition of the vast majority of human beings: a daily life spent without evident greatness, a life of manual labor. His religious life was that of a Jew obedient to the law of God (CCC531). His was a life of silence and work, a rich lesson in our busy world. He knew temptation but He was the new Adam who would not give in to sin (CCC538). He remained always perfectly obedient to the Father. He would come to be known as the suffering servant and paschal lamb who took our sins away. Christ s whole life expresses his mission: to serve, and give his life as a ransom for the many (CCC 608). The greatest news of all is that Christ our model shows us the way to eternal life! His Resurrection points to the fact that we too shall live forever. Death does not have the last word for Christ has come to open heaven s gates. Today Jesus asks you, Who do you say that I am? How do you answer? -Fr. Mass for Health Care Workers The annual "White Mass" recognizes the ministry of those who protect life and care for the ill and dying, such as physicians, nurses, compassionate care ministers, ministers of consolation, chaplains, mental health workers, and all in the medical profession. In recognition of the dedicated work of Catholic health care professionals, Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv. will extend a special blessing at Mass at the Cathedral in Savannah. Call the family ministry office at extension 12 to schedule your week. She travels through the year. The goal of the family rosary crusade is to promote praying the rosary in the homes. Pamphlets on how to pray the rosary for adults and children travel with her. The pilgrim image stays with your family for a week. When the week is up call our office to let us know when you will be bringing back Our Lady of Guadalupe to the Christian Formation Center. The family that prays together stays together. 6 THINK ABOUT IT MASS: The Liturgy of the Eucharist, Part 3, Blessing The Bread & The Wine Once the presider has been given the bread and the wine, both are taken to the altar. If a deacon is present, he will prepare the chalice (cup) by pouring a drop of water into the wine (if there is no deacon, the priest will do this), while saying a prayer. His prayer requests that we who participate in this Mass may come to share in the divinity oh Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity (symbolized by the drop of water. Blessings said over the bread and wine come from the ancient Jewish prayers still used today celebrating the Sabbath. It is most likely that these prayers are very close to what Jesus would have said when, as the Scriptures tell us, he took bread, and blessed (Mark 14:22). Sometimes the presider will silently pray these prayers over the bread and wine while a hymn is being sung. If he says them aloud, we give our assent (the priest s prayer is our prayer, too) by saying, Blessed be God Forever. Sometimes, at special celebrations of feasts, the gifts are incensed. Incense is made up of grains of material that, when heated, melt and give off a fragrant odor. Incense has been used by almost every world religion as a way of showing reverence to God. It is also a reminder to us that our prayer rises to God just as the smoke rises. We sometimes receive a blessing with incense. Here is how to do it. The priest/presider is incensed first, then priest/concelebrants (if any), then the people. These are recognized because of the Presence of Christ in them the presider and concelebrants because of their priesthood of Holy Orders, the people because of their dignity in their baptismal priesthood. When the deacon or acolyte comes to the center aisle with the thurible (sometimes called the censor) he will raise his arm asking the congregation to rise. He will then bow to the people. Here is what you should do: STAND. BOW BACK TOWARD HIM (this a way to acknowledge him). MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS as he swings the thurible in your direction. REPEAT THE BOW TO HIM (as a way of thanking him). SIT. D.L.
