2 Hunger We have all experienced that hungry feeling around midday as we sit in the classroom or at our desk at work and we think how nice a meal or a snack would be. We also know that we can hunger for more than food. We are a hungry and thirsty people. We hunger for life. It is part of our human condition. There is something good about this. To be human is to hunger, to want to experience life and probe its mysteries. In fact, very often a sign that someone is ill, whether physically or emotionally, is that they lose their hunger for new experiences and withdraw from the world. How have you experienced hunger? In a material way, think of Christmases past. Between the ages of 6-12 you probably fixated on a certain gift each year, perhaps a doll, a game, an action figure a BB gun or a fishing pole. Whatever it was you knew that your life would not be complete without this object. You told your parents and Santa Claus this fact repeatedly. You hungered for this gift. Some years you actually received that special gift. You were in euphoria. Now life would be different! And perhaps it was different for a week or a month or two. But then the prize lost its luster and something else became appealing to us, something that we could not live without. Our hunger was not filled. Hasn't this continued into our adult life? Surely the advertising industry is built on the premise of hunger. Your life is not complete unless have the newest item. We fantasize how it would be to have the newest, latest and greatest. Like Christmas past sometimes we get that item and it is nice, for a time, but it doesn't satiate our hunger. St. Augustine observed over 1,000 years ago. "Our hearts were made for Thee and they are restless until they rest in Thee." St. Augustine was merely observing our human condition of being hungry. But in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit he realized that only God could satiate us. No created object can fully satisfy our hunger, only the Creator. How might we identify our hungers? Look at what you think about all day long. Do I think about food, sex, sports, finances, my children, my work? What dominates my thought life, this will tell me much about my hungers. We all seek to be satiated. We want to be fulfilled. The mystery of life is to find out what will fill us. Is it eating good foods? Having the perfect relationship with another? Having enough money? Having the perfect body? In the end it is not material things that make us happy. How often have we seen people who seemingly have it all, beauty, wealth, a home and they are miserable? They still hunger. Why? True peace begins from being in right relationship with God. This is why Jesus can call Himself the True Bread. He alone will satiate us. If we are at peace with God it is amazing how much we can go without. We can live very simple lives and be happy. If we are not at peace with God we will seek that peace in all the wrong places. This is why we seek comfort in that which fails to satisfy: drink, drugs, sex, materialism. If Jesus is the True Bread, why settle for anything inferior? This is what the crowds in the Gospel are chastised about. Jesus asks them why they are working for food that perishes. To build our lives around that which is emotional or material is to build on sand. Jesus challenges the people to work for the bread from heaven. "Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life " This opens the way for us for the Sacrament of the Eucharist. This is what Jesus is pointing to as He calls Himself the Bread of Life. We all hunger for Jesus. Do we embrace Jesus in the Eucharist? Particularly those of us who are lifelong Catholics need to be sure that we do not take this beautiful gift for granted. Every week the Body and Blood are available to us to feed us and give us strength on our journey. Do we fully appreciate this gift? The people of Moses' day ate manna from heaven but we receive the Bread of Life, they very Body of Christ. We are all on a quest for happiness. We are told that if we would lose pounds then we would finally be happy. When we meet that special person then we will be happy. When we have that dream home then we will be happy. Then we finally retire then we will be happy. There are many things that we can hunger for in life. There are many things that we can thirst for. Let us put our faith in the words of Jesus, "I am the bread of life: whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." -Fr. Tim McKeown
