2 Imitators of God We are very fond of mottoes. We find a saying we like and we print it out and put it in a place we can see it often. You may have mottoes on some of the following places: your refrigerator, office cubicle, corkboard, on the bottom of your s or as your screensaver. I have one on my desk that is by Mother Teresa. It reads, Faithfulness, not success. I have another in my room by runner Steve Prefontaine which reads, To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift. There is an old beaten sign outside the Notre Dame locker room that reads, Play like a champion today. The players all touch this sign as they head out onto the field. Today our readings offer us a saying we can all write down. It comes from St. Paul who wrote invigorating and challenging letters. He writes today, So be imitators of God. How is that for something to tape to your refrigerator, Be imitators of God. Our first reaction is to throw in the towel and say, That is impossible! Me, imitate God? But let us pause and remember this is no mere motivational phrase, it is the inspired Word of God. The Holy Spirit would have us be imitators of God. Our next thought might be that we cannot hurl lightning bolts or carve out the Rocky Mountains so we are disqualified. St. Paul gives us clarification as to how we should live this out. Live in love as Christ loved us The way that we can be imitators of God is to live in love the way Christ did for us. What was it that Christ did for us? He humbled Himself and the Son of God became man. He suffered on the Cross for us to show us the depths of His love. He came and loved us. He handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. Thus, St. Paul is saying that this is how we should live. We should live in love and sacrifice ourselves for each other. A father should give of himself to build up his family. A mother lays down her life for her children. Siblings learn to sacrifice for one another. Single people resist the temptation to selfishness. This is how we imitate God. But I will let you in on a secret. This way of life is not only possible it has been done by millions of Christians throughout the centuries. Yes, great saints like Francis and Clare and St. Maximillian Kolbe but also regular people like you and me: mothers, fathers, business people, farmers and school teachers. In the Gospel today Jesus declares, I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever The secret for most of these people is that their lives centered on the Eucharist, the bread of life. How can we be imitators of God? With the Bread of life! As we continue along this journey God has made sure that we are nourished. Do you know the best way that God feeds us along the journey? He has given us the food par excellence that helps us on earth and that will lead us to eternal life. Jesus has given us the Bread of Life. Jesus speaks amazing words in the Gospel today. He says, I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. We are on a long journey. As with every journey we have a destination, for us it is eternal life with God in heaven. We are going to live with Almighty God forever and ever! We need the Body of Christ to sustain us for this journey. I often think, where would I be without the Eucharist to help me along the way? The Eucharist helps us live for others, to share the sacrificial love of Jesus with our children, family, spouse and co-workers. We become more Christ-like as we receive the Eucharist. We are empowered to live the words, This is my body which will be given up for you. One reason that we come to the Holy Mass is to be challenged. Let us take St. Paul s words to heart this week. Let us strive to be imitators of God. With the Bread of Life to empower us let us seek to live like Jesus this week! -Fr. Tim McKeown

We shall all gather for Holy Mass as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. Mass schedule: Tuesday August 14 at 7:00 pm, Wed. Aug 15 at 8:00 a.m. (school mass and open to all), Noon Mass, and 7:00 pm (in English and Spanish). If you decide to attend the 8 a.m. school mass, please take sit in the back half of the Church, so the students may sit in the front. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR): Classes begin Aug 12 th. PSR meets Sunday Mornings during the academic school year, 9:30 10:40am, for children Pre-K - 8 th Grade. If you have not registered yet, please come over to the school and we will help you get your child registered for this new year. Call Deacon Larry -DRE , X14. Each year we are asked to give to the Bishop s Annual Appeal. This goes to the Diocese of Savannah for expenses that the parish does not pay. One of the main expenses is the education of our seminarians. We are one of the parishes that most directly benefits from the seminarian program. This year we were assigned Fr. Chris Hassel after he completed seminary. Last year we were served by Deacon Patrick May during his pastoral year. Our parish target this year is $57,285. Thus far we have raised about $40,000 of our total. We have had 91 of our 671 families participate. If you have not made a pledge please take an envelope from the pew. You can either put it in the collection basket or mail it directly. Please memo your checks St. Francis Xavier so we are sure to get credit for it. Thank you!

4 This year (beginning the week of Aug 20) we are moving the School Mass to Friday mornings at 8:00 a.m. This means that mass on Wednesday mornings will be in the chapel at 7:00 a.m. Here is the new schedule at a glance (which will begin the week of Aug 20 th ): Monday - Noon (Chapel) Tuesday - 7 a.m. (Chapel) Wednesday - 7 a.m. (Chapel), 7 p.m. (Church) Thursday - 7 a.m. (Chapel) Friday - 8 a.m. (Church) Sacramental Requirements Baptism: Parishioners wishing to have a child baptized should be registered in the parish and should contact a member of the clergy as early as three months before the birth of their child. First Eucharist: Normally received in the 2 nd Grade. Parents should contact the Director of Religious Education. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacraments. Confirmation: Normally received in the 8 th Grade. Parents should contact Director of Religious Education. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacrament. RCIA/Adult Confirmation: Adults interested in becoming Catholic or in need of the sacrament of Confirmation should contact a priest or deacon. Anointing of the Sick: Please contact the pastor or church office to schedule. The Council of Catholic Women would like to invite the ladies of the parish to our first meeting September 10, 6 to 7:20 pm in St Anne s room. We gather for a meal and join together in prayer at each of our meetings.
