While the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Many suffer due to high rates of poverty and unemployment, illiteracy, and poor education. The SFCA supports pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and reconciliation in a continent often marked by division and tension. To learn more, visit Monthly Fatima Rosary will be in the main church on Thursday July 13 at 6:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. The Knights of Columbus will host a blood drive on Sunday, July 16th from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Xavier Hall. Please consider giving a pint of your precious gift of life to others. Your donation will remain in the local community. Scheduling an appointment will ensure your time is respected. The Knights of Columbus will provide the volunteers needed for service. 3 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 11 is one of my favorite Gospels; Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. My yoke is easy and my burden is light. I remember working on the tobacco farm as a boy. We always had tractors by the time I was born; I never had to plow a mule, the old fashioned way. But one year, we had a hurricane that dropped lots of rain; the fields were flooded; the crops were drowning and there was no way a tractor could stand up in the field. It was too heavy. So my dad hired a mule and a one row pull plow, to try to plow up between the rows to help the water evaporate. For the first time in my life, I plowed behind a mule. He had a leather yoke on the harness which fit over his head and on his shoulders perfectly and that mule pulled that plow through that wet dirt with me walking behind, trying to hold that plow straight. It was some of the hardest work I have ever done! That yoke was heavy and the mule was doing most of the work! In Palestine in the time of Jesus, yokes were still made of wood; not leather, and they had to fit very exactly, or they would chafe the shoulders of the oxen. When Jesus says today, My yoke is easy and my burden light, the Greek word which is translated easy could also be translated well fitting. So in the time of Jesus, the ox was brought to the carpenter and measured very precisely. Then the yoke was roughed out of wood and the ox was brought again and measured again. It was carefully adjusted so that it would not gall the neck of the patient beast. It was tailor made to fit. His work was hard enough. At least the yoke should be well fitting and not chafe. There is a lovely legend, that Jesus, who we know was a carpenter, made the best ox yokes in all of Galilee. People came to him from everywhere because his yokes fit so well and they would never chafe the ox. In those days, as now, shops would have a sign above their door, identifying the business. According to the legend, the sign about the carpentry shop of Jesus said, My Yokes Fit Well. (Is that legend true? We don t know, but as my Church history professor always said, If it ain t true, it oughta be. ) Our yokes, the trials and crosses we have, are tailor made for us. God orchestrates this; he knows what is best for us. Pope Benedict once said at World Youth Day: The world offers you comfort. You were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness! So when Jesus says, My yoke is easy; my yoke fits well, what He means is that the life he gives us is not a burden to gall us; our task is tailor made to fit us. He is trying to get us ready for Heaven; to love the way they love in heaven. -Fr. Brett Brannen (Fr. 4 Apple tree The apple tree donations are starting earlier this year. If you are interested in helping buy supplies for the school please take an apple off one of the boards at the exits of the Church. Please return your apple with your donation and place under the tables at the back of the Church no later than August 6th. St. Francis Xavier School is looking for a volleyball coach and a robotic club moderator. Please contact the school at if you are interested in assisting with these activities. Once again, St. Francis Xavier School will be selling car raffle tickets for Davis Love's Friends of the Foundation Challenge. Tickets are $20.00 each and St. Francis Xavier School will receive twenty dollars for every ticket sold! Our goal is to sell 1,500 tickets! There will be other charities selling these tickets throughout the community, but we ask you to support our Catholic school by purchasing your tickets at the church or school office. Thank you for your generous support! Financial News Collections for July 1st & 2nd Due to the holiday, the bulletin was submitted before the weekend. It will be posted next weekend. Thus far we have reached 70% of our Bishop's Annual Appeal goal with just 13% of the parish participating. Let's make a push to reach our goal. Among the ministries the BAA funds is the room, board and tuition of our seminarians, like Deacon Chris Hassel. If you have not made your pledge please do so today. Thank you! 6 Sacrament Requirements Baptism: Parishioners wishing to have a child baptized should be registered in the parish and should contact a member of the clergy as early as three months before the birth of their child. First Penance and Eucharist: Normally received in the 2 nd Grade. Parents should contact the Director of Religious Education. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacraments. Confirmation: Normally received in the 8 th Grade. Parents should contact Director of Religious Education. Enrollment in Catholic School, qualifying home school, or Parish School of Religion (PSR) is required for at least 2 years leading up to the reception of the sacrament. RCIA/Adult Confirmation: Adults interested in becoming Catholic or in need of the sacrament of Confirmation should contact a priest or deacon. Matrimony: A minimum of 6 months preparation is required. Contact a priest or deacon to set up an appointment regarding scheduling and preparation. Anointing of the Sick: Please contact the pastor or church office to schedule. How does our parish attract inquirers each year who consider becoming Catholic? The answer is you! Our parish has several inquirers each, and most of these have been invited by a friend, family member or coworker. You can answer Jesus call to share the Divine message of salvation by inviting your family members, your co-workers, your friends and your neighbors. We thank God for our being open to the Holy Spirit. Let us continue to pray that the Lord will give us the grace and courage to offer someone a gentle and, humble welcome to the Catholic faith. Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15) The RCIA is a journey toward full initiation into the Catholic faith, and it has alternating periods and steps. The four periods prepare participants for the four subsequent steps into the great tradition of the Catholic Church. I. Period of Inquiry Step 1: Rite of Acceptance II. Period of Breaking Open the Word Step 2: Rite of Election III. Period of Purification and Enlightenment Step 3: Celebration of the Easter Sacraments of Catholic Initiation IV. Period of Mystagogy The RCIA is a journey of invitation and initiation not indoctrination. Throughout the journey, you are encouraged to prayerfully discern if God is calling you to continue. The RCIA is intended for: Those who have never been baptized in a faith tradition Those baptized in a faith tradition other than Catholic Those baptized Catholic as infants who have been inactive since that time and have not received the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation You are welcome to explore the RCIA journey at any time.
