Amen. Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Moses said, See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 3

Psalm 119:1-8 Beati immaculate BCP-763 (Anglican Chant Sung by the Choir) 1 Happy are they whose way is blameless, * who walk in the law of the LORD! 2 Happy are they who observe his decrees * and seek him with all their hearts! 3 Who never do any wrong, * but always walk in his ways. 4 You laid down your commandments, * that we should fully keep them. 5 Oh, that my ways were made so direct * that I might keep your statutes! 6 Then I should not be put to shame, * when I regard all your commandments. 7 I will thank you with an unfeigned heart, * when I have learned your righteous judgments. 8 I will keep your statutes; * do not utterly forsake me. 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 Edward John Hopkins Brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for solid food. Even now you are still not ready, for you are still of the flesh. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving according to human inclinations? For when one says, I belong to Paul, and another, I belong to Apollos, are you not merely human? What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each. For we are God s servants, working together; you are God s field, God s building. 4

Gradual Hymn Now that the Daylight Fills the Sky H-4 Verbum supernum prodiens The Gospel (please stand) Matthew 5:21-37 Jesus said, You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, You shall not murder ; and whoever murders shall be liable to judgment. But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, You fool, you will be liable to the hell of fire. So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord. But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be Yes, Yes or No, No ; anything more than this comes from the evil one. Sermon The Nicene Creed The Rev. Sara Lilja BCP-326 5

Post Communion Prayer BCP-365 Prayer for the Election of a Rector BCP-818 Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing Hymn at the Retiring Procession The Dismissal BCP-366 God of Grace and God of Glory H-594 Cwm Rhondda BCP-366 Organ Postlude Festival Finale Malcolm Archer It has long been the custom at St. John s Church for the congregation to be seated and listen to the Organ Postlude. Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. Today s Altar flowers are given by Ron Magill and Philip Correll to the Gloryof God and in loving memory of Ron s parents, Ralph and Lillian Magill, to honor what would have been their 80 th Wedding Anniversary on February 12 th. We welcome today the Rev. Sara Lilja. The Rev. Lilja has been serving as the Director of the Lutheran Office of Government Ministries for the NJ Synod and is representing that Diocese and the Diocese of NJ as well, acting as a faith-based advocate in Trenton for social justice issues shared by New Jersey Episcopalians and Lutherans. The program is LEAMNJ [Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy Ministry of New Jersey]. ANNOUNCEMENTS Music in today s liturgy: Today is the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany. As always at St. John s, all of the music, hymns, anthems, organ music, reflect or amplify the themes found in the lessons and prayers for this day. The Organ Prelude is based on the 7

Gregorian tune of our Gradual Hymn. It is by George Oldroyd ( ) an English organist (St. Michael s, Croydon) and composer of Anglican Church music in the Anglo- Catholic tradition. The choir will sing Psalm 119:1-8 in an Anglican Chant setting by Edward John Hopkins ( ), an English organist (Temple Church, London) and composer of Hymn Tunes and Chants. He was also a co-founder of the Royal School of Church Music. The Choir s Offering Anthem, Ubi Caritas, is a lush Romantic arrangement of an ancient Gregorian Hymn by Maurice Duruflé ( ), a French organist (St. Ettiene du Mont, Paris), composer (organ and sacred choral music) and teacher (Conservatoire de Paris). The Communion Motet, Lord, for Thy Tender Mercy s Sake, is a straight-forward little gem of Tudor style choral music by Richard Farrant ( ) an English organist (Chapel Royale & St. George s Windsor) and founder of The Black Friars theater group. St. John s Choir finds itself, oddly enough, in need of volunteer Sopranos! If you know of good singers, high school age or older, who are not committed to a choir in another Church, and who would be interested in singing regularly very good music in a very good choir, please encourage them to try St. John s. And let Bill Clisham know of anyone who might be contacted with an invitation. Bill s contact information is on the back of the service leaflet. We give free tune-ups. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. This week we served 53 people. February s volunteers are 2/7 Fr. Trull, 2/14 Sue, 2/21 Bonnie and Rick, and 2/28 Aud. On February 28, Shrove Tuesday, at 6:00 p.m. we are having a pancake supper and hosting St. Luke s-woodstown, St. George s-pennsville, and Our Merciful Saviour-Penns Grove. Please sign up in the Parish Hall or by calling the Church Office by Feb 21. For more information, contact Ron Magill. Mark Your Calendars! St; John s will have two Ash Wednesday services on March 1: One at noon and the other at 7:00 p.m. and Deacon Sally will be taking ashes to the hospitals and nursing homes and shut ins during the day. 8
