3 Liturgy Reflections June 19, 2016 year C 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invited everyone to rediscover the value of silence as a prayerful setting. There we should reflect on God s mercy toward us and there make mercy toward others the heart of our lifestyle. Luke repeatedly portrays Jesus praying at decisive moments: baptism, choosing the Twelve, teaching the Lord s Prayer, Transfiguration, Mount of Olives, the Cross. Today s Gospel opens with an image of how to prepare for discipleship Jesus prays. Though praying in solitude, Jesus disciples were with him. Modeling contemplation in action, Jesus physical withdrawal from activity is never spiritual abandonment of others. Contemplative prayer strengthens and focuses active ministry. When Jesus asks, Who do crowds say I am? disciples specify Elijah and John the Baptist. Like Jesus, both blended contemplation and activity. They prayed in solitude, then boldly preached truth, advocated justice, challenged the politically powerful. When Peter declares Jesus the Christ of God, Jesus demands silence so that, hearing Jesus predict the Messiah s suffering, we can learn what authentic discipleship requires. A disciple of Jesus must deny self, embrace daily a personal cross, and follow Jesus self-sacrificing way as our own. As long ago God s fountain of mercy cleansed Zechariah s Jerusalem of sin, so now, Galatians declares, baptism s font makes all of us God s children, clothed in Christ. Belonging to Christ, we are also descendants of Abraham, thus brothers and sisters to all, within and beyond Christianity. So as this Jubilee Year renews our gratitude for God s mercy toward us, we resolve to become selfless instruments of God s mercy toward all. Psalm 16 You are my inheritance, O Lord. 2nd Reading: Galatians 5:1, A proper use of freedom includes service to others, motivated by love. Gospel: Luke 9:51-62 Jesus expects us to leave everything to follow him. In today s Gospel Jesus resolutely begins his journey to Jerusalem. He does this with some urgency, telling his disciples what they must do to follow him. As we hear these words today, perhaps we can examine our own lives to see what we need to set aside and leave behind in order to follow Jesus more closely on the way. Legend tells us that St. Peter asked Jesus this question on the outskirts of Rome. And we know where Jesus went in response to His Father's will. Quo Vadis Days is a 3-day free camp for young Catholic men to learn more about the priesthood, to deepen their faith, and to better discern God's call in their lives. 5 Update on Future Plans for St John Parish and School Many of you attended the Discovery Workshops last winter that were designed to assist in renewing and revising the campuswide 5 Year Plan. Through this process, we have begun to refresh our current plan to reflect progress made to date as well as articulate goals and next steps. Leadership from the many parish and school ministries participated in the workshops facilitated by the architectural firm, Broderick and Associates. Here is a brief update of where we are in the planning process today: Archbishop Sartain has approved our request to proceed with creating a comprehensive plan to renovate, remodel, and/or construct additional building (s) on the campus to accommodate current and future needs and to conduct a feasibility study to determine realistic funding levels. Parish & school leadership are in the process of hiring a Feasibility Consultant. A Feasibility Study will help us to determine whether or not to go forward with a fund-raising campaign. Several plans, developed by Broderick & Associates from the feedback gathered at the Discovery Workshops, will be presented to the community for review in the fall. There will be numerous opportunities for input from the community before going forward with any plan. No decisions have been made at this time. The Feasibility Study is tentatively slated for January 2017.

6 Custodial Staff - Part Time Thursday Friday 7-10pm Saturday 12pm-6:30pm Sunday 8am-1:30pm Part Time Custodial person needed for a large Catholic Parish and School Campus. The successful candidate will provide custodial support as scheduled or assigned. The successful candidate will provide weekend Parking Lot security during Parish Masses. The successful candidate will be fully ready and able to respond appropriately to management and/or community emergencies by assisting as needed. Additional job functions include, but are not limited to: -Security during Masses -Closing down the Church after each Mass -Parking Lot and Campus security -Vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping of flooring and stairs. -Clean and sanitize bathrooms. -Restock supplies in bathrooms. -Empty all trash cans and replace liners, clean receptacles as necessary. -Clean to building standard Qualifications: Minimum of a High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED), at least 3 years related experience and/or training and good communication skills. Prefer an active participating Catholic, but will consider someone of a Christian faith. Valid State Driver's License required. Background check required. Compensation: DOE, Cell phone provided

In recent weeks, we have heard about the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) and how it sustains the central ministries serving our parish and Catholic schools and other organizations around the Archdiocese. Many of you have already made a gift or pledge. Thank you! We are making progress! We have collected $68,000 so far toward our goal of $90,692. We still need to raise another $22,692 to meet our goal! If you haven't made your pledge, please do it today! go to the Seattle Archdiocese and click on the Annual Catholic Appeal and follow the prompts. Thank you! Remember that each parish - and we are one of 175 parishes which cover Western Washington - is asked to contribute to the support of the Church. I am asking you consider a gift to this year's Annual Catholic Appeal. If everyone contributes something, we can make our appeal goal. I fully realize that some people cannot make any contribution however I ask for you to complete a card with a pledge to pray. Once a year, Catholics throughout the Archdiocese are asked to support these ministries through the Catholic Appeal. Their support advances the work of the Church both within and beyond the boundaries of their parishes. Through a shared commitment to the Annual Catholic Appeal, we unite our hearts and hands with one another as the body of Christ in the Archdiocese of Seattle. The Appeal is funded through the generosity and commitment of those who believe in these ministries and want to ensure that they remain strong.

8 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) I thought I already gave this year?! There are two major annual opportunities for giving in our Parish each year. The following points will hopefully help to clarify the differences: Annual Catholic Appeal Occurs in the Spring of each year Archdiocesan campaign (Denominational) Supports over 60 ministries and services throughout Western Washington Pledge to the Archdiocese - May to April Donations processed through Archdiocese Parish Stewardship of Treasure Occurs in the Fall of each year Parish renewal (Congregational) Provides parish ordinary income Yearly pledge to the parish - January to December Here's the Breakdown There are 175 parishes and missions in the Archdiocese, serving 579,500 Catholics. When you give a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal, your money goers to support over 60 ministries and services. Some of the ministries supported include: Catholic Faith Formation * Catholic Youth Organization * Multicultural Ministries * Catholic Schools * Youth and Young Adult Evangelization * Sister's Retirement * Catholic Community Services * Tribunal * Retired Priest's Medical Care & Priest's Pension * Seminarian Formation * Diaconate & Religious Life * Lay Ecclesial Ministry What if We Collect More than Our Goal? Any money we raise over our goal of $90,692, comes back to the Parish to fund a project of our choice. We will be putting that rebate toward the Crispin's Kitchen remodel project. It's a win - win!
