W ELCOME TO ST PAUL S. We are glad that you have come to worship God with us today. If you are a visitor from another parish, or worshipping with us for the first time, please introduce yourself to our parish priest, Fr James Collins, or to anyone wearing a name badge, over a cup of tea or coffee in the parish hall after the service. You ll find it behind the church. 2 First aid kits are located on the wall of the kitchen in the Large Hall behind the church and in the choir vestry. People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form on the inside back cover, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. Children are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. Children s Church runs during Term Time. Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to the sacrament. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. Please do not take photos inside the church or during the services of worship without permission.
My Dear Friends, I hope that you are all well. I was recently looking at a book about the Blackets (The Blackets: An Era of Australian Architecture, Morton Herman, 1963). Here is a beautiful quote: Luck brushes some people unnoticed. Dozens of Governors and their ladies laid the foundation stones of scores of mediocre Australian churches, but it fell to the lot of the Countess of Belmore to lay the foundation stones of the two churches which can be considered the best buildings of Blacket's very best period. We saw that she laid the foundation stone of St Stephen Newtown in November This was only four months after she laid the stone of St Paul Burwood,, for St Paul Burwood is the work of Blacket at his best period, The church is small, not particularly ornate, but the disposition of the parts, the proportions and scale are nearly perfect. The details are of the finest craftsmanship (p. 138) My comments that St. Paul's is the most beautiful Parish Church in Australia are borne out by this quote St. Paul's may be considered the finest of Blacket's buildings and the heritage project has confirmed this. We are truly blessed to be able to worship God in such a beautiful Church. Herman's biography can be found at: P.S. Herman was taught by Professor Wilkinson who designed the Chapel of Our Lord's Passion in the North Transept.
A new Saturday evening Eucharist will be held at St Paul s every Saturday at 5.00 p.m. We will share Holy Communion together and then, if people would like, we can share fellowship together over a simple shared meal. Beginning at 5.00 p.m. will mean that families can come and share worship and a meal and be home in time for children to get to bed. Everyone is welcome. Praise God for yet another opportunity to worship God and to fellowship together. Thank you to the very kind parishioner who has donated the square reader which is a device that accepts credit and debit cards. Thank you to the parishioners who have paid for more kneelers. Birthday greetings to Mr Jeremy Southwood who has celebrated a birthday this week. Many happy returns and every blessing for the coming year.
NEW men s work socks for Life Jacket. Would you like to donate a kneeler as a thank offering to God? These kneelers are $175 each and you can make them yourself or we can get someone to make one for you. We have many people who are looking forward to working some more kneelers. If you would like to order one just speak to Rosemary. In past winters many of you have knitted Teddy s. This winter we would ask you to knit squares that can be sewn together to form blankets. Please use 4mm needles, 8 ply wool and caste on 50 stiches and knit until square. There is plenty of wool available in a tub at the back of the church. Thank you for your compliments following the service on Sunday, 12th June. It was a high and festive occasion in the history of our Parish. I have been encouraged by Fr James, and numerous among you, to continue singing the full Communion Service. Thank you for this. As a result of my discussions with Fr James, I am pleased to tell you that the singing of the full Communion Service will be sung on the Sundays of most months as listed below: Sunday, August 14th Sunday, October 30th Sunday, November 13th Saturday, December 24th (Midnight)
On Sunday, September 11th, Choral Evensong will be sung. The Choir is enjoying a busy year. As well as preparing for Sunday services, we are rehearsing for our Fundraising Concert On Sunday, 21st August at 5.00pm. The proceeds will be given to Church Wardens' Appeal for wonderful restoration. Please invite your friends and family - music followed by delicious refreshments! Sheryl Southwood Music Director We are blessed that Bill Whittle and Syd Farrow, and some new keen gardeners, give so generously of their time and expertise to care for the beautiful grounds around St. Paul's. Is anyone able to give some time to help Bill and Syd to care for our precinct? Please have a chat with Bill or Syd if you can help. Thank you. You can join us on our Facebook page: groups/ /. To go directly to our page: 1. Look up our website: 2. Then scroll down the home page until you come to the blue band at the bottom and click on the f in the circle under Connect with us. Forthcoming events and other interesting news will be posted there! Thank you Margaret Whittaker for your care in administrating our Facebook page. Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul s, Burwood, to be
used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish." If everyone gave electronically it would mean that the Parish would further benefit by receiving giving each week from every person rather than only receiving giving when each person can physically put their financial gift into the collection bag. Why not give it a go? The bank details are: Account name: St Pauls Anglican Church BSB number: Account number: Reference: e.g. offertory, kneelers, parish pantry, choir, organ, church building, etc.. We are urgently in need of the following: Tins of ham, tin of corned beef, Spam, small cans of tuna, creamed rice, pasta, Heinz & Campbell's chunky food, Up & Go, sweet and savoury biscuits and desserts, and fruit drinks. We have plenty of baked beans and spaghetti for a while. Some more washing machine liquid or powder would be appreciated. Thank you for your continuous support and generosity towards the Parish Panty. It could not function without your generous donations. Tickets is now on sale. $2 each or 3 for $5. This will be drawn on Father's Day Sunday 4th of September. Prizes will include a bottle of Grand Marnier, 4 slice toaster and more.
Whilst Edwin Taylor is on leave, we have enjoyed the playing of Fr Michael Deasey OAM, Hamish Wagstaff and David Tagg at our Sunday Services. We are most fortunate to have musicians of their calibre as deputy organists. I am sure you all join me in thanking them very much. Sheryl Southwood Director of Music Two of our artists are giving their services to this recital. This is a very generous of them. I am sure it is not too much to ask everyone to tell at least two friends of this wonderful recital, not forgetting refreshments! Word of mouth is still our best communication. Our Church is unique and its transformation deserves to be admired by many more than our regular parishioners. There will be an opportunity before the concert to have a guided tour of the Church. I will do all I can to promote it, but I need all your help to gather the largest audience we can. How proud we would be to fill the hall! Thank you for your continuing support. 15 Sorrow everywhere. Slaughter everywhere. If babies are not starving someplace, they are starving somewhere else. With flies in their nostrils. But we enjoy our lives because that's what God wants. Otherwise the mornings before summer dawn would not be made so fine. The Bengal tiger would not be fashioned so miraculously well. The poor women at the fountain are laughing together between the suffering they have known and the awfulness in their future, smiling and laughing while somebody in the village is very sick. There is laughter every day in the terrible streets of Calcutta, and the women laugh in the cages of Bombay. If we deny our happiness, resist our satisfaction, we lessen the importance of their deprivation. We must risk delight. We can do without pleasure, but not delight. Not enjoyment. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world. To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil. If the locomotive of the Lord runs us down, we should give thanks that the end had magnitude. We must admit there will be music despite everything. We stand at the prow again of a small ship anchored late at night in the tiny port looking over to the sleeping island: the waterfront is three shuttered cafés and one naked light burning. To hear the faint sound of oars in the silence as a rowboat comes slowly out and then goes back is truly worth all the years of sorrow that are to come. Jack Gilbert, Refusing Heaven
Hosea ; Psalm 85; Colossians (16-19); Luke Jesus was praying and his disciples asked him to tell them how to do. So it is we have the universal Christian Prayer. It has become too well known. We know it by rote and can recite it without even thinking about the words we say. However if we reflect on it with intention, it leads us into an inner place with Jesus, where we can do as he suggested Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you. The psalmist also knew this. The Lord will also give us all that is good: and our land shall yield its plenty. Pray: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial. Give thanks for the Anglican Church of Melanesia, remembering especially today the Church s new archbishop, the Most Rev George Takeli.
