From Fr Ivica Dear Fr James, Many nice greetings from Dunedin. Hope all is well in sunny Sydney. As you would know, I had some extremely hectic weeks here. Anyway, I got a letter of offer today and I responded with my letter of acceptance for the position of Precentor in Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland! The news is yet under embargo, until 16th October, when the Bishop will announce it in Auckland Cathedral. It is an extremely exciting position, as you would imagine. God is good and it is interesting to compare time only 4 years back! I do hope St Paul's is going well. I do keep you constantly in my prayers! I proudly said that I became an Anglican in St Paul's, and that redeemed me, after I told them I am, by Anglican origin, a Sydney Anglican. :-) Are you planning to come any time to Auckland? Maybe now is a good time to make it happen! We have a house on three levels provided, just 3 minutes walk from the Cathedral, in the heart of the City! I will let you know how are things going. If you are willing, please be so kind to ask people of St Paul's on 16th to pray for me in my new ministry. Continued next page

I was so happy when I realised that there were people who, eventually, knew still my name! God bless you all! Please, do stay in touch! Blessings, Ivica Rev'd Ivica Gregurec ACSC Priest Assistant - The Anglican Parish of Dunedin North Chaplain - Ross Home, St Andrew's Home & Hospital, Taieri Court Home Fr James reply to Fr Ivica Dear Ivica, Congratulations! How wonderful and amazing. I am so happy for you and, yes, it's fantastic to think that your new appointment stems back to your being here at St. Paul's just a few years ago and that God is now opening up this door for you to exercise your fine Priestly ministry at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland. I won't say a word to anyone yet but can you please send me a copy of the Bishop's letter or formal notice of appointment so that we can put this in our pew sheet for the 16th (or the 23rd if you would prefer) and announce it here too. Everyone here at St. Paul's will be very excited to hear your wonderful news and please be sure that you will be in our prayers. You are in my prayers and I thank God for you and for your having been appointed as Precentor at Holy Trinity Cathedral. With my love, prayers, and every good wish. Peace, James.

This morning we welcome Olivia Ciantar, Chelsea Rose Falls and Willow Ann Wari (Pattison into the family of God, the Church, through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. Pray for Olivia, Chelsea and Willow, their godparents and parents that they may know God s presence in their lives and be enfolded with God s love. It is our custom in the All Souls' Day service, for the Rector to read the names of our loved ones that we would like remembered. If you would like someone to be remembered at this Service, please add their names to the sheet at the back of the church. It will be available next Sunday. Attached to the sheet is a copy of the list we are currently using for the Years' Minds in our weekly intercessions. The list is alphabetical so it is easy to check that we have the correct information. Each year on the 1st November the Church honours all the saints of God known and unknown. The Feast enables us to give thanks to God for these holy men and women who through the ages have proclaimed the Gospel without fear or favour and enriched the life of the Church they have been an example to us all and their lives have inspired us to be more committed in our own Christian pilgrimage. Thanks be to God for the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Paul and all the saints may we honour them in our worship and in our lives. On Wednesday 2nd of November, we will commemorate All Souls Day when we remember all the holy souls who are now in the fuller presence of our Lord and in the company of the saints the Church triumphant. Join us at 10.30am or 7.00 pm in the Parish Church as we celebrate a Requiem Eucharist for all the departed, now in God s loving care and presence we will remember our family members, our friends and those

who have no one to pray for them. Give rest, O Christ to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. These are the items that we are currently collecting: New men s undies of various sizes Light weight socks - new Sports socks - new Joggers especially large sizes These can be used so long as they are in good condition. You can join us on our Facebook page: groups/ /. Forthcoming events and other interesting news will be posted there! Thank you Margaret Whittaker for your care in administrating our Facebook page. A kind parishioner has already donated 100 torches.

We have had another cushion completed for the Chapel of our Lady. It will not be long before all 6 are in place. Would you like to donate a kneeler as a thank offering to God or in memory of someone or to dedicate one to someone? These kneelers are $175 each and you can make them yourself or we can ask someone to make one for you. We have many people who are looking forward to working some more kneelers. If you would like to order one just speak to Rosemary. Collection given at St Paul s on Sunday 9th of October: $1783 Other collection given: New Life Centre Nepal: $70 Parish Pantry: $20 Bishop of the NT: $100 Votive Candle: $93 General Donation $600 TOTAL: $2666 Thank you for responding to God s generous love. Thank you to those of you who make such very generous donations to the Parish Pantry each week but as Fr James tells us the need keeps growing. Foods always needed are: coffee, tinned ham, spam, cereal, Up and Go & full cream milk. tins of chunky soups, pasta, tins of tuna, spreads and sweet biscuits. We also seem to get through a lot of safety razors. Currently we are also in need of toothbrushes and toothpaste. If you are able to contribute any of the above items it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

After sharing Morning Prayer and a Eucharist with the Franciscans in their delightful Chapel, I headed off early to beat the heat and the crowds to spend the day at Westminster Abbey. It was a lovely walk, crossing the Thames at the Millennium Bridge and then walking beside the Thames along the Victoria Embankment past one impressive building after another. There must have been some military observance today as there was a parade of Grenadiers with their band beside a memorial. As I suspected, the tidal flow of the Thames was reversed this morning with it flowing rapidly in the opposite direction to that which I witnessed yesterday afternoon. Westminster Abbey is glorious, having been founded in 960 by the Benedictine Monks who landed on Thorney Island which in due course become Westminster (where the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben are). The Abbey, Cloisters, and Chapter House are all magnificent, as are the Little Cloister, St. Catherine's Chapel Garden, and the College Garden. The whole precinct, with surrounding buildings for Clergy and the School, is in splendid condition and make a unified whole. My two favourite parts of the Abbey were the Shrine of Edward the Confessor, where I was permitted to enter alone and pray, and the Pyx Chamber, with its two thick doors both of which have three great locks on them, its very thick walls without any windows, and its beautiful cabinets for storing vestments (the one for storing copes is the semi-circular shape of a cope as it would be if it were lying horizontally) and liturgical vessels. This was in effect the strong room in which valuables were kept. There is too much history, too many tombs, too many people to recount, and so much that is so very beautiful to even begin to give an adequate summary.

The overall impression is of indescribable beauty (the ceiling in the Lady Chapel is exquisite) a beauty of holiness, along with a deep sense of history that extends beyond the vast number of tombs and memorials (it was so fitting to see Elizabeth and Mary joined in death in a way that they couldn't be in life) it's more the profound hope that is at the heart of our faith as Christians that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord, not even death itself, which gives meaning to our finite lives in a way that enables us all to contribute to creating a world that is more loving and gentler through our lives of love and care. Before heading back to Southwark, I then visited St. Margaret's Church which is right next door to the Abbey. As it was getting late, I then re-traced my steps back along the Thames to the Millennium Bridge and over the river to Southwark. Oh, and it did get hot here today, being the hottest day of the year, with many Londoners in severe heat distress and not coping with the hot conditions at all well and requiring help from Ambulance officers who were kept busy with people who were experiencing heat stress. There were also far fewer Police on patrol today so maybe there was some threat yesterday which might explain why they were out in such very high numbers. After Evening Prayer, dinner, and Compline I was very happy to get into bed as I had been walking all day. Fr James Collins

Anointing of the Sick is available at any of our Services. In James 5: we read: 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. (NRSV) If you would like to be anointed and to be prayed for then please ask one of the Priests in the Parish so that you can be anointed during any of our Services. The Wednesday mid-week Eucharist includes prayers for healing every week. If everyone gave electronically it would mean that the Parish would further benefit by receiving giving each week from every person rather than only receiving giving when each person can physically put their financial gift into the collection bag. Why not give it a go? The bank details are: Account name: St Pauls Anglican Church BSB number: Account number: Reference: e.g. offertory, kneelers, parish pantry, choir, organ, church building, etc.. Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul s, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish."

Jeremiah ; Psalm ; 2 Timothy ; Luke 18:1-14 The Scriptures, Paul tells Timothy, are the breath of God and it is a powerful image for without breath, there is no life. This echoes Jeremiah who tells Judah that God will write his Law upon their hearts and minds and the Psalmist celebrates the Law as sweet honey. So our encounter with God and his Word is not some dry, intellectual thing. Rather it involves heart and mind, our senses and breath, touching every part of our being. Indeed, it is life itself. Pray that the Bible isn t just for the mind when we sit and read it but may it also be for our lives when we arise and go about our day and as we breathe, may we remember the breath of God. Give thanks for Anglicare-PNG, a community development organization of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea.
