The list is alphabetical so it is our Facebook page. easy to check that we have the correct information. Each year on the 1st November the Church honours all the saints of God known and unknown. The Feast enables us to give thanks to God for these holy men and women who through the ages have proclaimed the Gospel without fear or favour and enriched the life of the Church they have been an example to us all and their lives have inspired us to be more committed in our own Christian pilgrimage. Thanks be to God for the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Paul and all the saints may we honour them in our worship and in our lives.
On Wednesday 2nd of November, we will commemorate All Souls Day when we remember all the holy souls who are now in the fuller presence of our Lord and in the company of the saints the Church triumphant. Join us at 10.30am or 7.00 pm in the Parish Church as we celebrate a Requiem Eucharist for all the departed, now in God s loving care and presence we will remember our family members, our friends and those who have no one to pray for them. Give rest, O Christ to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. Congratulations to Antonia Deasey and Fr Michael Deasey on the birth of their grand daughter Piper. We hope that all is well with Meghan and the baby. Our warmest best wishes to Lady Angela Carrick who has recently celebrated her birthday - we wish her every blessing for much happiness and good health in the coming years enfolded with the love of God. Many happy returns Lady Angela! These are the items that we are currently collecting: New men s undies of various sizes Light weight socks - new Sports socks - new Joggers especially large sizes These can be used so long as they are in good condition. A kind parishioner has already donated 100 torches.
There are very few weeks that we don t have thank yous for something or someone and this week is no exception. Our very genuine thanks go to the following people: The parishioner who keeps us supplied with baptism bears. If you have ever wondered what is in those bags that are given to parents and godparents at each baptism, apart from parish blurb, there is a beautiful Christening Bible and a hand knitted teddy bear with the image of a Baptism candle stitched onto it. Each of these bears are hand made by a parishioner Syd and Bill have been hard at work in the garden. They almost single handedly keep our grounds tidy. Kevin Finnity has been completing his Service for the Duke of Edinburgh Award by helping in the garden. Syd and Bill are very grateful for his help. Thank you to the parishioner who has recently made a substantial financial gift to the parish for refurbishment. Our beautiful church is like a sign to people that we care. Recently we have had several more kneelers paid for which will all add to the beauty of the church. Thank you. There are three cushions finished for the Chapel of Our Lady. Two are in place and the third will be very soon. People keep giving to the Parish Pantry. Where would we be without you? We now have not one or two families but several families who regularly come in for food. The number is steadily increasing which is a real comment on our society. It is becoming harder and harder for families to manage. For every ten people who come in 100 items go out. Parishioners have given flowers in memory of loved ones. What a nice thing to do and we all get the benefit of their beauty. Again it is members of our congregation that so beautifully arrange them. Thank you.
From Fr Ivica Dear Fr James, Many nice greetings from Dunedin. Hope all is well in sunny Sydney. As you would know, I had some extremely hectic weeks here. Anyway, I got a letter of offer today and I responded with my letter of acceptance for the position of Precentor in Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland! The news is yet under embargo, until 16th October, when the Bishop will announce it in Auckland Cathedral. It is an extremely exciting position, as you would imagine. God is good and it is interesting to compare time only 4 years back! I do hope St Paul's is going well. I do keep you constantly in my prayers! I proudly said that I became an Anglican in St Paul's, and that redeemed me, after I told them I am, by Anglican origin, a Sydney Anglican. :-) Are you planning to come any time to Auckland? Maybe now is a good time to make it happen! We have a house on three levels provided, just 3 minutes walk from the Cathedral, in the heart of the City! I will let you know how are things going. If you are willing, please be so kind to ask people of St Paul's on 16th to pray for me in my new ministry. I was so happy when I realised that there were people who, eventually, still knew my name! God bless you all! Please, do stay in touch! Blessings, Ivica Rev'd Ivica Gregurec ACSC Priest Assistant - The Anglican Parish of Dunedin North Chaplain - Ross Home, St Andrew's Home & Hospital, Taieri Court Home

We have had another cushion completed for the Chapel of our Lady. It will not be long before all 6 are in place. Would you like to donate a kneeler as a thank offering to God or in memory of someone or to dedicate one to someone? These kneelers are $175 each and you can make them yourself or we can ask someone to make one for you. We have many people who are looking forward to working some more kneelers. Collection given at St Paul s on Sunday 16th of October: $1668 Other collection given: Baptism Donation : $150 Parish Pantry: $65 Bishop of the NT: $50 St Matthews Zabbabdeh:$ TOTAL: $2033 Thank you for responding to God s generous love. If you would like to order one just speak to Rosemary. Thank you to those of you who make such very generous donations to the Parish Pantry each week but as Fr James tells us the need keeps growing. Currently the urgent need is for Up & Go. Foods always needed are: coffee, tinned ham, spam, cereal, Up and Go & full cream milk. tins of chunky soups, pasta, tins of tuna, spreads and sweet biscuits. We also seem to get through a lot of safety razors. Currently we are also in need of toothbrushes and toothpaste. If you are able to contribute any of the above items it would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Offertory Envelopes for the next 12 months are available today from the back of the Church and come into use from the first Sunday of next month, 6th November. The use of Offertory Envelopes is a systematic means of giving to the work of the Church week by week (even when not present on a particular Sunday) so if you wish please collect a new Set of Envelopes as you leave today. If everyone gave electronically it would mean that the Parish would further benefit by receiving giving each week from every person rather than only receiving giving when each person can physically put their financial gift into the collection bag. Why not give it a go? The bank details are: Account name: St Pauls Anglican Church BSB number: Account number: Reference: e.g. offertory, kneelers, parish pantry, choir, organ, church building, etc.. Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul s, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish."

Task group considering amending clauses in canon law for parishes with small congregations and declining attendance The Church of England is considering dropping its legal requirement to hold weekly Sunday services in churches with small and declining congregations. A paper posted on the C of E website discloses that the simplification task group is considering amending clauses in canon law to relax the requirement for morning and evening prayer in every parish church every Sunday. The task group is part of a wide-ranging programme to modernise the church and stem its falling numbers. Pete Broadbent, the bishop of Willesden, who leads the task group, said the move was intended to bring canon law in line with custom and practice. He said: In rural parishes, no vicar can actually get around all their parishes so technically, they re breaking the law. All we re doing is putting the law in line with what already happens. Rural churches have experienced falling congregations for decades. Most rural vicars have multiple benefices, with some in charge of up to 10 churches. Earlier this year, the C of E synod was told that the church expects its numbers to continue to decline for the next 30 years, with today s figures of 18 people for every 1,000 regularly attending services falling to 10 for every 1,000. Numbers attending church services have fallen by 12% in the past decade to less than half the levels of the 1960s, with attendance at
Sunday services falling to 760,000, according to church statistics. The paper says the task group is considering changes to canons [church decrees] B11 and B14 to relax the requirements for regular worship in parish churches in sparsely populated benefices. Currently, clergy have to maintain regular services even if only a handful of worshippers turn up. Canon B11 says: Morning and evening prayer shall be said or sung in every parish church at least on all Sundays and other principal feast days, and also on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Each service shall be said or sung distinctly, reverently, and in an audible voice. Lay members of the church may be authorised to take services in some circumstances, it adds. Canon B14 says: The holy communion shall be celebrated in every parish church at least on all Sundays and principal feast days, and on Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday. It shall be celebrated distinctly, reverently, and in an audible voice. Broadbent said that dioceses and parishes had been consulted on the proposal to change canon law and the measure would be put to the C of E synod next year. The paper was approved by the archbishops council, a body which formulates and advises on strategic thinking and planning. Our thought and prayers are with our Director of Music, Mrs Sheryl Southwood, as she recovers from a broken wrist. We pray that Sheryl recovers quickly.
A senior Anglican archbishop from the Global South called for the Church to be ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Christ in the face of persecution, restrictions, terrorism, and violence carried out in the name of religion. Archbishop Mouneer Anis of Cairo was addressing archbishops and bishops from some of the most difficult places in the world in which to practise the Christian faith: Sudan, Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Southern Africa, West Africa, Indian Ocean, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South East Asia. More than 100 delegates also discussed the importance of ecumenical and inter-faith dialogue. Guests at the opening session included representatives of the Vatican, Coptic Orthodox Church and Al Azhar University in Cairo, the seat of Sunni learning. The leaders of the Anglican Communion s Global South (the world s third largest Christian denomination, after the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches) which is home to 72 per cent of the worldwide Anglican population, or about 62 million people discussed critical challenges facing them, including poverty, the refugee crisis and religious violence. Archbishop Anis said the Church in the Global South had many challenges and weaknesses, and highlighted the prevalence of disease and polygamy, tribalism, corruption, and harsh treatment of women, as well as false teaching of the prosperity gospel, and the teaching of the Jehovah s Witnesses and Mormons. He also warned of an ideological slavery resulting from some Western churches and organisations us[ing] their wealth and influence to push their own agendas in the Global South. He continued: We need to be aware of this, and resist all kinds of slavery, whether financial or ideological, or else face cultural defeat and captivity.
While the archbishop and other speakers stressed fidelity to the teachings of Christ and criticised provinces they accused of departing from them, Anis added: We cannot continue to focus on the faults of others while neglecting the needs of our own people. A former Bishop of North Africa, Bill Musk, noted that North African Christians were persecuted in the early centuries of Christianity as they are now, and said unity was vital to withstand such challenges. A communiqué from the talks reported: The Arab invasions eventually overwhelmed the Church [in North Africa], but the seeds of its demise were sown long before. Bishop Emeritus Musk also praised the fifth-century Council of Carthage, which took place in what is now Tunisia, at which it was decided that no diocese had the right to discipline leaders in another, despite a deep cultural divide within the Church. Bishop Musk described the Church at that time as being riven between a Latin elite that advocated a compassionate response to Christians who denied their faith under persecution, and local Berbers, who insisted upon faithfulness to Christianity until death. Speakers at the conference emphasised the Church s North African heritage, challenging the view of the Church as a foreign imposition foisted on Europe s former colonies. American Canon Dr. Ashley Null, highlighted the deep dependence of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, one of the architects of Anglicanism, on St. Augustine, whose bishopric of Hippo lies in modern-day Algeria. Dr. Null, who is writing a fivevolume study of the private theological notebooks of Archbishop Cranmer, noted that in his day, Augustine was derided as the son of a Berber who spoke Latin with an African accent. On the second day of the conference, the bishops had a 90-minute audience with President Fatah Al- Sisi, who told them Egypt was keen to guarantee freedom of belief and worship for all its citizens. Egypt s Coptic Christians have complained of targeted attacks worsening again this year.
Joel ; Psalm 65; 2 Timothy 4.6-8, 16-18; Luke Paul s confession in our Epistle reading for today shows how he understood the Christian life. With powerful images he tells Timothy at the end of his life that he fought the good fight, ran the race and kept the faith. He reminds us that the Christian life has to start somewhere but the incredible journey of faith continues throughout our life. We can be encouraged that God is with us every step of the journey giving us strength and standing by our side. Pray that we may persevere in our faith, in God s strength confident that he will never leave us. Give thanks for the work of the Church of the Province of Myanmar s development desk, and the diocesan development desks. Text: Dr Michael Sutton Ordination candidate, Diocese of Anglican Board of Mission, 2016 Anointing of the Sick is available at any of our Services. In James 5: we read: 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. (NRSV) If you would like to be anointed and to be prayed for then please ask one of the Priests in the Parish so that you can be anointed during any of our Services.
