People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form inside the pew sheet, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. Children are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. Children s Church runs during Term Time. Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to the sacrament. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. Please do not take photos inside the church or during the services of worship without permission.

TODAY is ADVENT SUNDAY which marks the beginning of the new Church (Liturgical) year. We enter into Year A in the lectionary cycle with the Gospel of Saint Matthew. Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the coming of Jesus when we celebrate his Holy Nativity at Christmas. The colour for Advent is purple and the ADVENT WREATH is in place with three different coloured candles, there are three purple, one white and one pink (rose). The white candle in the centre is the symbol of Christ s purity and lit at Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve to mark His birth and a pink ( rose) candle which is lit on the Third Sunday known as Gaudate Sunday from the opening words of the Introit - "Rejoice"- which speaks of joy and the move from repentance towards celebration. TODAY the Advent Wreath is blessed then the First Candle is lit. May this Advent be a time for us to truly prepare for the coming of the Lord Jesus in all humility and draw us closer to Himself so that we may be brought to a joyful celebration of His Holy Birth. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Priest All Each Sunday during the singing of the introit hymn, as the choir go to their places, the servers, lay assistants and priest move to the advent wreath for the advent wreath liturgy, the hymn pausing before the last verse. As we begin the season of Advent, we acknowledge the symbols of the great mysteries we celebrate at Christmas. From these the Advent wreath has been made. O God you are our eternal Father, you sent your son to bring us eternal life. Reader We have the evergreens. These evergreens are the sign of eternal All life. They symbolize the eternal life that Jesus brought to us from God. O God may your life in our souls always increase and grow stronger. May it always remain in us and may we live in happiness with you forever. Reader We bring candles. These candles remind us that Jesus, the light of All Priest the world is coming. He is the light that shows us the way. As candlelight sheds warmth and beauty all around so does the light of Jesus fill our lives with love and happiness. Come Jesus be our light. May the light of your goodness and truth shine through us. May it shine through us upon others. O God, by whose word all things are sanctified, pour forth your blessing upon this wreath and grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the coming of your son and may we receive grace from you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lighting Of The First Candle, The Candle Of Hope Priest Light and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord. All Priest Priest All Thanks be to God. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Who made heaven and earth. Come Lord Jesus, light of the world. O God help us to prepare for the coming the coming of your Son. Bring us out of the darkness into light. Bring light to all who are in darkness and in the shadow of death. Amen.

Reader God told Abraham that through him all nations would be blessed Priest because he trusted and put his hope in God. The prophets spoke of the coming of Christ, of how a Saviour would be born, a king in the line of David. He would rule the world wisely and bless all the nations. We too believe in God s promise to send Jesus again to this world to establish his kingdom upon earth. A server lights the first candle. Hope is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at the light of this candle we celebrate the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Let us pray: O Lord, we are waiting. Give us hope and the strength to turn from our sinful ways. Keep us from the things and people who cause us to turn our backs on you. Help always to meet the needs of others. We ask this of you who lives and reigns forever. Amen. The final verse of the hymn is sung immediately after this prayer. The custom of the Advent wreath has been appropriated into the Anglican tradition from Protestant middle-european denominations and is, according to some accounts, a relatively modern innovation from the nineteenth century. In its current form the wreath consists of four small candles of the liturgical colour of each Sunday (usually four violet candles or three violet candles and a rose one) and a large white one. Violet is the colour that the Church employs to symbolize penitence and suffering and it reminds us that we not only look for God s coming into the world as a the Prince of Peace at Christmas (violet also being the colour of royal and imperial power), but his coming to us to be our Saviour through his sufferings, and his coming as our judge at the end of time. Rose is the liturgical colour in the Roman rite for the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday from the first Latin word of the day s opening scriptural sentence (known as the introit). It means rejoice. The third Sunday of Advent anticipates the joy of the Christmas celebrations, so its colour is a mixture of Advent violet and Christmas white. The fifth candle in the Advent wreath, white in colour, the Christ candle, is lit at the Vigil (Midnight) Mass for Christmas.

Thank you to everyone who has been bringing in things for our Advent Packs and for Judith and Rosemary for their time and effort in designing and preparing those packs. The packs are now available at the back of the church. We hope your children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews will enjoy the journey through Advent to prepare for Christ's coming. If you are going to do this with your own children please put aside a shoe box and some toilet roll inners to use as we will not be providing them this year. The tickets are now on sale for the Christmas raffle. The main prize will be a wonderful Christmas hamper. Could we have donations of Christmas fair to fill it with? Suggestions - plum puddings, biscuits, canned fruit, Cranberry sauce, Christmas decorations, smoked oysters, serviettes, anything you might like to use at Christmas. The tickets will be $2 each or 3 for $5. Please place these in the washing basket which will be at the back of the church at each service or give to Pam or leave at the Church Office and mark for Christmas Hamper. It will be drawn after the Lessons & Carols on Saturday 18th of December.

Our worship for the Feast of Christ the King was so very beautiful: the Bell Ringers called us to worship and the Choir sang magnificently. Not only was the Gloria glorious, the Choir sang the Communion Motet marvellously. Our Baptism Services are deeply meaningful as we welcome other fellow pilgrims who are pledging to follow Jesus in the way of self-giving love (those Parishioners who boycott our Baptism Services not only miss out for themselves they also fail in their duty to encourage others in the faith of Christ). Here are some thoughts that I penned on our worship this morning to a friend in the US: The rise of ultra right wing nationalist movements around the world is worrying ("let's make America great again"????? I thought that America was supposed to be the greatest nation on the planet how come the victors are sounding and feeling like the losers?) and it is rather like the inter-war period in Germany after the Treaty of Versailles with the Germans vowing never be pushed around again and all of this creating the environment where Naziism and Hitler could arise. We face a similar problem in our period of world history and it won't end well unless moderates of all persuasions work together for the common good. Nietzsche's will to power once again threatens our world for when people give up on loving God and their neighbour all hell is unleashed. Our worship of Christ the King of love and peace reminds us that the way of self-sacrificing love is the way of life and that the way of power, privilege, and prestige leads to death both spiritual and physical. The way of Christ might look foolish and weak but God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.

Our worship today was wonderful, beautiful, and deeply meaningful. Five were Baptized two of whom are a very special part of our community of faith. How wonderful and how very special. Being in the Diocese of Sydney, most Parishes won't Baptize anyone unless they are regular worshippers so we get a lot of people looking for Baptism for their children because no one else will. We take Baptism seriously and prepare everyone for Baptism but welcome everyone too and the Baptism Service is once a month as a part of our main Eucharist. Unless it's an emergency, I don't do private Baptisms. So we get a lot of people who will probably never link up with us but the seed is sown and the Spirit blows where it will so if we welcome people and have a beautiful Baptism Service for their children then I hope that they or their children might come to worship God some where at some time. It's pretty much guaranteed that if we don't welcome them that they will never worship God any where at any time. Fr James A brief note to thank each one of you who participated in last Sunday s great Festival of Christ our Eternal King. (And those who had us in their thoughts and prayers although unable to be with us.) The Parish Eucharist was a wonderful act of worship to the One we honoured as The King of Kings, the Prince of Peace and as we acknowledged the Sovereignty of Christ, the Eternal King. It is an honour and deep privilege to be able to join together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ to offer Him such a wonderful act of worship. Our thanks to Fr James, our Parish Priest, who enables us to express our worship in such a meaningful manner. To Sheryl, our Director Of Music, we are grateful for her planning and dedication so we are able to meaningfully participate in a great Mass setting sung with such commitment that uplifts our spirits (our thanks Sheryl to each of your choristers) and to our brilliant organist that makes the Davidson

organ hum and to be inspired his playing and today especially by the magnificent Gospel music that one wanted to shout "Halleluiah" as the music filled us with joy and anticipation of the new Jerusalem. The shape of the Liturgy was wonderfully enhanced by the band of the "servants of the sanctuary" - the stoic thurifer, the joyous boat boy, the dignified crucifer, the diligent acolytes and faithful Gospel bearer. Of course we missed Fr Michael who was doing missionary work at Christ Church S. Laurence, resplendent in cope and biretta - a high standard to be maintained!! Thank you Fr James for encouraging such wonderful acts of worship at S. Paul's such as we had for All Saints-tide and today as we concluded another liturgical year (and of course all our services) - the words of the old collect for this Sunday are a fitting reminder as we ask: "Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people: that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thy loving kindness be the more abundantly rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord." Sheryl do keep up the good work being done by you, Edwin and the Choir, which enriches our lives and we look forward to the serving team going on from strength to strength as new and we hope younger blood may swell the ranks..

Again thank you for helping in this important work you each do in the life of the parish and making this old Sacristan's role a lot easier and lighter as after over 60 years helping in so many ways in the sanctuary and chancel it is getting close to the time when I should be hanging up my surplice and cassock!!!! (and some would add my little bell!) What a joy it is to serve Christ our Eternal King. Every blessing, Graham Norman On Friday 18th November, we celebrated Thanksgiving with a Turkey dinner and lots of lovely food. It was a night of good company and much conviviality shared amongst all who came. Thank you to everyone who brought food and a special thank you to the family that cooked the turkey. Sitting around in a circle, sharing what we have been particularly thankful for or something that has been very special to each of us over the last year demonstrated the diversity of those present. This is the second year that we have held a Thanksgiving dinner and no doubt the beginnings of many more. I recommend that you put this in your diary for Last Saturday, Fr James, Dr Jane Carrick, Dr Bob Woods and Rosemary King all attended the opening of the new medical centre at Exodus. It was a special morning with Exodus own band setting the tone. Bill Crews spoke from his heart about the journey that they had been on with Dr Bob s first medical centre being located in an area little bigger than a cupboard. Minister Skinner, the Minister for Health officially opened the centre. Now they have a centre with a medical office, a dentists surgery and offices for staff as well as a waiting room and reception area. The design is very clever with small spaces being used efficiently. It is a good example to us of what can be done on a minimal budget with some very clever planning. It was a privilege to invited to this very special event.

THANK YOU TO THE PARISHIONER who has gifted the parish two new sets of Burse and Veil for the Altar. One is purple and the other white. You will see from the photographs below just how beautiful they are. We have been very blessed by this generosity. This parishioner has also kindly given the parish some more candles and incense.

A big thank you to Pam Brock for organising today s Parish Christmas Luncheon. Thank you to those who put up our Advent Wreath. Manjia Luo's Piano Music was nominated top 5 at Australian Independent Music Awards 2016 in Classical/ Jazz. Well done Manjia! The Advent Gift Tree will be placed in the Church from Sunday, December (Advent II) to place gifts under for those in need this Christmas for distribution by the Exodus Foundation over Christmastide. Wrapped gifts short be labelled indicating the suitable age and gender of the gift. Gifts may be left for two Sundays and until Wednesday 21st December. The Advent Gift Tree becomes our Christmas Tree from the Midnight Mass of Christmas Eve. Dear Peter and Andrew, It was such a wonderful treat to see you this morning at St. Paul's, Andrew and Matt. You are welcome here anytime. Thank you very much for your kindness in coming to St. Paul's and fixing up the audio link to the Bell Tower, adjusting the microphones over the Choir Stalls, and replacing the RØDE headsets and the connecting leads to the wireless belt pack and receiver units. The new RØDE headsets are terrific. Thank you for these beautiful gifts. I am truly grateful to you for you love and care and for your generosity and kindness. I look forward to seeing you again soon. With my love and thanks. Peace, James.

BACKGROUND When Judy Tenzing and I travelled to Nepal last year we assessed what was possible for Rising Nepal to undertake in the terms of Earthquake relief and we came back with 3 projects. 1. Rebuilding different aspects of the village of GYACHCHOK at the first Epicentre. Subsequently many village toilets have been rebuilt and money contributed to the rebuilding of the local hydro electric plant, enabling power for lights to be restored. The next goal is to provide funds for building 11 classrooms for the school. 2. Building and staffing a Health Post for the Village of BHAKANJE. Plans for this are underway. 3. Working in partnership with teachers from SMD School, Kathmandu. A school that educates children from the remote Himalayan regions for free. CURRENT PROJECT Last week Rising Nepal brought Shirley Blair, Director of SMD School, to Australia to set up an in-service program to take to Nepal next year. And what a week it was. In the months since our return from Nepal I have been talking to Barbara Stone (past principal of MLC) regarding a culturally and educationally appropriate in-service program that would benefit the teachers of SMD school. The initial planning has been done and last week saw the first stage put into operation. Barbara has spent a lot of time and much careful thought in planning four amazing days, with appointments lined up with Principals of several of Sydney s leading schools. In 3½ days Barbara Stone, Shirley Blair and myself visited 8 different premier schools in Sydney to present our

proposal to take 10 to 12 outstanding classroom teachers to Nepal after three terms of training in coaching/mentoring teachers. This will be a one on one program where each teacher and their partner have already got to know each other through contact during the year. Then over a period of 6 to 8 days in December 2017 they will walk side by side with their Nepalese partner. This model will be one of sustainability and we already have a strong indication that we will need to run it again in It is one of the most exciting programs that I have been involved in and I look forward to the next stage in its development. 15 Would you like to donate a kneeler as a thank offering to God or in memory of someone or to dedicate one to someone? These kneelers are $175 each and you can make them yourself or we can ask someone to make one for you. We have many people who are looking forward to working some more kneelers. If you would like to order one just speak to Rosemary. Thank you to those of you who make such very generous donations to the Parish Pantry each week but as Fr James tells us the need keeps growing. Currently the urgent need is for coffee & Up & Go. If you are able to contribute any of the above items it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Foods always needed are: Tinned ham, spam, corned beef, cereal, Up and Go. tins of chunky soups, pasta, tins of tuna, spreads and sweet and savoury biscuits. With the hot weather we have run out of juice. If you can please bring poppers of drink/juice. Australia Post has issued this year's Religious Christmas Stamp for Cards sent within Australia - 65 cents (The stamp shows S. Mary tenderly cradling the Infant Christ in her arms). There are 2 other Religious Stamps for overseas mail available. When buying your stamps ask for the Religious 65c stamp (or overseas stamps) and help keep the real meaning of Christmas alive. (some smaller Post Offices are pretending they have not seen them and try to give you secular stamps!!!)

Isaiah 2.1-5; Psalm 122; Romans ; Matthew The Psalmist prays for the peace of Jerusalem while Isaiah sees a day when many peoples from all nations will go up to the mountain of the LORD and to the LORD s house to be taught his word and his ways. May we, this Advent, as we ponder anew the birth of Jesus, wake from our sleep, for our salvation is near, the night is over and the day has come. Let us put on the Lord Jesus Christ and walk in the light. And let us not be found wanting when our Lord returns again. May he find us people of faith, hope, love and peace. Pray that this Advent we may love our neighbours as ourselves, rejoice with and encourage one another with the promises of God in our Lord Jesus Christ. Give thanks for the work of the Anglican Alliance for Development, Relief and Advocacy.
