People needing wheelchair access can enter St Paul s most conveniently by the door at the base of the belltower. Name badges help make St Paul s an inclusive community. If you need a new name badge, fill in the form inside the pew sheet, send it to the parish office, and one will be made and left in church for you. Please turn your mobile phone off or on to silent before the service starts. It ll save you much embarrassment later on. Toilets are available at the entrance to the parish hall, which is located behind the church. Ask a member of the clergy or anyone who s wearing a name badge. We re here to help. Children are welcome in church at any service. There is a selection of children s books and toys at the back of the church near the font and there are also kids activity sheets and pencils available at the back of the church where the pew sheets and prayer books are. Children s Church runs during Term Time. Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 9.30am Eucharist. Please feel free to bring your children to the altar rail to receive a blessing, or to receive Communion if they have been admitted to the sacrament. As you take your place in your pew, please make yourself aware of the route to the nearest emergency exit. Should there be a fire, leave quickly, turn right, and assemble by the roundabout on Burwood Road. Please do not take photos inside the church or during the services of worship without permission.
The AGM will be held today Sunday 18th of March beginning at 11.30/45 a.m. in the large hall. Today we enter into Passiontide - the name given to the last two weeks of Lent beginning today, the 5th Sunday of Lent known as Passion Sunday ending on Holy Saturday (Easter Eve). From today all images - crosses, icons etc - are covered in veils usually violet or black which is called the "veiling" and remain in place until Holy Saturday. Our thoughts now become more concentrated on our Lord's Passion as we journey with Him to His crucifixion - a time to ponder anew on God's love for us culminating with our Lord's death on the Cross. As we come to Holy Week there is an opportunity for us to share that final week with a daily celebration of the Eucharist at 7.00 pm in the Chapel of Our Lord's passion. May these final days of Lent draw us closer to God as we strive to know Him better and seek to serve Him. Much music has been written for Passiontide especially the last days of Holy Week. Passion cantatas have been composed and many settings have been made of the Latin poem, Stabat Mater, which describes Mary standing in front of the Cross watching her son die. Notice that there are special hymns for Palm Sunday, thus hymns for Passiontide may be squeezed out on that day (which is the last Sunday of Lent). At our own Good Friday Liturgy we have the moving rendering of the sung Reproaches after the Veneration of the Cross.
The following is the Lenten Acclamation all join in before and after the Sentence: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. Good Friday is the most solemn day in the calendar of the Church when we solemnly recall the death of our Blessed Lord on Calvary's Cross and try to grasp the outpouring of such tremendous love. Our Good Friday Liturgy reflects this so there will be no morning tea served on this day nor 'meet and greet' at the door. At the end of the Liturgy all are asked to leave Church and grounds and precincts in complete silence the Parish Church will remain open for half an hour or so after the Good Friday Liturgy for those who wish to remain in the bare, darkened Church to pray and meditate in silence before the Crucified Lord. Collection given at St Paul s on Sunday 11th of March: $2153 Other collection given: Parish Pantry: $ 60 Votive Candles: $172 The money raised from all fundraising this year will be put towards obtaining new curtains for the Parish Hall. We have raised approximately $1000 so far but will have a long way to go. NLC Nepal: $ 50 Total: $2435 Thank you for responding to God s generous love. The fundraising events coming up are as follows: Mother s Day Raffle Saturday 19th May Book Fair including clothes, morning tea

A young trainee nurse, with excellent references, needs a place to stay for one month. She is an overseas student from Japan and is currently living at Pymble. The university, in its wisdom has given her a placement at Liverpool hospital. Bad enough if you are driving yourself but it will take her 2 1/2 hours each way on public transport. Is there anyone on the T2, T3 or T5 rail lines who has a spare room who could put Eri up for one month, from mid April to mid May. I am told she is very neat and tidy and very quiet and she would spend days off at Pymble. If you think you might be able to help please speak to either Fr Atsushi (8.00am service) or Rosemary. T2 is the Inner West, Leppington, City line, so it goes through Strathfield Station T3 Liverpool, Lidcombe, city line, terminating at Liverpool T5 go to Leppington Richmond line goes through Merrylands, Guildford Thank you to Judith Laurence for creating the magnificent Holy Week and Easter activity pack for our children and their families. We are grateful to Sophie Sun for translating the Holy Week and Easter Pack into Chinese. It is a beautiful activity pack full of terrific ideas and activities and we pray that it will be a blessing to our children and to their families reminding us all that Easter isn't about bunnies.

They take place each Tuesday at 7.30pm through Lent. We are studying: Jesus : A Very Short Introduction by Richard Bauckham, Oxford University Press, 2011 (available from Dymocks) All are very welcome to come and engage with God and with all those who attend our wonderful study group. Over the years the parish has benefitted from the generosity of parishioners, not only when they have been active members of the parish, but also at the time of their death. Parishioners are invited to remember the parish in their wills by making a bequest as a thank offering to God and to ensure that generations to come will enjoy worship and fellowship in well maintained buildings. Those wishing to make a bequest are invited to do so using these or a similar form of words: "I bequeath the sum of $... to the Rector and Wardens of the Anglican Parish of St Paul, Burwood, to be used at their absolute discretion for the charitable purposes of the parish." There are always opportunities to help. Assistance is needed to maintain the church and Rectory gardens, flower arranging, choir, bell ringing, morning tea takes many hands. The sidesperson and welcoming roster is a very important ministry. Assistance at special functions e.g. fetes, Sunday trading table, selling raffle tickets, making jams & pickles to sell, collecting bread, helping with afternoon tea after recitals and the upcoming BBQ to name a few. Please speak to the Sheryl, regarding choir and recitals, Wardens or the Church Office so we can direct your efforts.
Russian artist Ivan Kramskoy s Christ in the Wilderness hanging in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow created quite a stir but drew exceptional crowds when it was first shown in 1872 at the Peredvizhniki exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and in cities throughout the country. The painting is a radical and shocking departure from iconoclastic tradition and projects a terrifying aspect that, were it not that we know the outcome of the plot, would leave us as forlorn and desolate as the subject rendered. In this 1872 Christ in the Wilderness depiction, however, Kramskoy offers an image of the Christ that departs from the sanitized offerings of the past. In this painting, we see the temptation of Jesus through the eyes of uncompromising realism. With his back to a rising sun, a somewhat disheveled and not at all glamourous Jesus is seated on a boulder in a barren and dry wilderness setting of abysmal desolation, a setting that exudes aridity, a setting from which we would flee in terror. He is hunched forward with hands clasped on his knees; his red eyes staring straight ahead in bedeviled anxiety. He does not look like someone who has only just heard the voice of God say to him and to the world, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. It strikes us that we have taken the temptation of Jesus too lightly; too much for granted that, yes, of course, he would come through it. Here, the artist has assigned a brooding existential humanity to Jesus that is utterly distressing. We feel his palpable hunger and thirst; a loneliness and terror that pierces to the heart of a completely obscure divinity. We see a haunting isolation of unspeakable profundity and magnitude. To some observers, like Russian writer Vsevolod Garshin, the image of Jesus in this work communicates his determined resolve to confront evil head on, and in the raw. To others, however, it seems that Jesus here is
seriously weighing the options, the consequences of yielding or not yielding to his temptations. Ostensibly, the work of redemption has begun. Could it be also that God, the Father, for the moment has abandoned him and that, for the first time, Jesus is beginning to comprehend the prophetic destiny he is to fulfill; that on his straight and narrow road to Calvary he will unrelentingly have to contend with his humanity? This painting lends a new aspect, not only to the horror of the temptation in the wilderness, of which we have generally thought in quite benign terms, but also to the Gethsemane passion we know is yet to come; in fact, has already begun, here in the wilderness.
This was the 16 th bus trip organized for St Paul s Parishioners. There were 35 happy travellers on a very comfortable coach bound for the Highlands on Friday 9 th March This is the second to this area but with all new venues. The last one was in The forecast was for fine weather even though there was just a very light shower as we gathered. This cleared very quickly into a perfect day. We made very good time travelling to Bundanoon to view the Uniting and the Anglican Holy Trinity churches. The local ladies at the Uniting Church welcomed us and had the kettle boiling ready for a muchappreciated morning tea. This church was immaculate and very well kept. The rector of Holy Trinity across the road met us and told us a little about the history. The back wall on the outside of the church is still the 100-year-old galvanized iron with windows. They are hoping to finish it and build a suitable hall. We travelled onto nearby Exeter via the other side of Bundanoon. This village is known as Little England. The church, St Aiden s is very quaint from the outside but has had two internal additions in 1911 and 2005 after being built in A local, who was the seventh generation for the Badgery family (who was one of the first land owners and had a lot to do with the development of the village and church), gave us a run down of the history. This is also where Yates seeds began. Their hall is a War Memorial Hall built in It appears much larger from the outside than it really is. Moss Vale one of the largest towns of the Southern Highlands was our next town. The Anglican church of St John was our lunch stop. The original part of the church was built in 1881 with an extension in The two were joined together and both very distinct and different in design. They have a small hall, which was very suitable for our group to sit down for our paper bag lunch containing the delicacies made by our on board caterers. They have plans with Sydney Diocese to upgrade their hall to a multifunction area.
Bowral was the next town, which is the home of the Tulip Festival and Don Bradman Museum among other things. We visited St Jude s Anglican Church. This is the second church on the site. The first being an unusual 1874 Blacket design which was not favoured by the locals. It was demolished in1886 instead of extending it. The new church was started the same year. In 2011 they joined the original hall and church with a new modern facility giving them more space to accommodate their growing congregation. We were lucky to have Alan Beavis, their organist render a recital for us. Mittagong was the last town of the tour. This is the gateway to the Southern Highlands from Sydney. It was here that the Maltings of Tooth & Co were and the FitzRoy iron mine and steel works began. We visited St Stephen s Anglican Church. This is another augmentation of the old and new being combined to accommodate their growing congregation. The church built around 1877 has some Arthur Blacket features added in In 2007 a new ministry centre was commenced which was connected to the church. They had to remove the wall at the west where it was joined and replaced with a full-length glass wall. This was a long day but most enjoyable. We visited new places for some, learnt new facts about the towns and made new friends. Watch this space for the next trip, which will be in October. Thank you to all who helped in any way on the day.

A special thank you to those who are bringing food every week. You are the life blood of this project. More and more people are needing your help; from the elderly, to the young, the retrenched and the casual workers, those out of work and the homeless. Poverty is no discriminator. We now have nearly as many women coming in as men, and several with small children. Thank you for your help. Here is the list of items most needed for the parish pantry: Tinned tuna; Tins of sardines; Tins of salmon; Harvest Meals in a tin eg Vegetables and Sausages Rice Tinned corn cream or kernels Savoury biscuits; Sweet biscuits; Long life Milk; Up & Go All flavours; Sun Rice Meals e.g. Butter chicken, Green chicken curry, Chicken satay, etc Tins of corned beef; Tins of spam; Tins of ham; Instant Coffee; Sugar; Boxes of Cereals Tea; All Day Breakfast by Heinz; Chunky soups Heinz & Campbells; Tinned fruit Rice Cream Drinks poppers Pasta & Spaghetti; Instant potato, cuscus Safety razors Toothpaste Toilet Paper Shampoo and conditioner Deodorant for both men and women ( we run out of these items very quickly)
Most of us, from time to time, find our wallets and purses full of annoying small coins and some even collect jars of them. There is a novel way we could rid ourselves of these annoyances and add to the beauty of our worship at the same time. St Paul s is fortunate to have wonderful embroidered altar frontals and accessories that enhance our worship in every season of the church year. These have stood the test of time even though some are now in need of some repairs and restoration. Not as visible are the altar cloths, corporals and purificators that are also used at every service. Unfortunately for us, these are not so long lived and, in the case of the altar cloths, are coming to the end of their lives. The altar cloths on the main altar predate the current altar and are actually too big for it. The cloths for the north chapel are all holey rather than holy. Replacing the altar cloths is actually quite an expensive exercise but that s where that loose change comes in. If we dropped our spare change into a box near the font each week, hopefully, we could accumulate sufficient funds to order new pieces as the funds accumulate. Each piece will need to be individually made for our requirements and the aim would be to use good quality modern blend fabrics that would be long lasting and easier to launder. It would be great to have a beautiful cloth of fair linen ready for the main altar for our next Christmas celebration and continue the coin collection to gradually replace and repair all our vestments. You can join us on our Facebook page: groups/ / Forthcoming events and other interesting news will be posted there! Thank you Margaret Whittaker for your care in administrating our Facebook page.
