1 THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST, GORDON SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION 17 MAY 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE MISSIONER In the last psalm in the Bible s Psalter the psalmist sings HALLELUJAH, the Hebrew word for PRAISE GOD. This is the psalm that forms the framework for our Prayer In The Bible workshops. For three thousand years the psalms have stood as the tested and tried prayer of the faithful seeking to bring their lives in offering before God. They are theology and spirituality. They reflect our littleness along with our greatness and invite us to stand before the Almighty Creator of all and give Him the honour that is His due. The first of three PRAYER IN THE BIBLE WORKSHOPS was held yesterday, with the second and third sessions on 23 and 30 May. The workshops examine prayer in the Old Testament, including the Psalms, and the New Testament, the objective being to gain additional insights to aid personal prayer life. Sessions begin Saturday mornings at 10:00AM and run until 1:00PM. They are open to every parishioner, with no need to RSVP, bring anything or study in advance. The May ST JOHN S KITCHEN MONTHLY COMMUNITY LUNCHEON is tomorrow at noon. Come enjoy a delicious hot meal and dessert for ten dollars. One main dish choice is always suitable for vegetarians and the dessert table has a wide choice of sweet dishes from which to choose. You are encouraged to wear something RED FOR PENTECOST next Sunday. A LAST POST CEREMONY will be held Saturday, 30 May at 4:00PM. Robert Plant was the lucky winner of the WOMEN S EVENING GROUP MOTHERS DAY RAFFLE. The splendid address delivered by DR BRENDAN NELSON at the ANZAC COMMEMORATION SERVICE at St John s on 3 May is available for those who may be interested, both as an audio file on the church s website, (Click on Worship, then click on Sermons, then click on the picture of audio headphones and play the recording), and as a printed transcription, which may be picked up from the narthex. (If you find all the paper copies have been taken, please let Yvonne Moon know of your interest and a copy will be made for you.) The cost of REPLACING THE CURRENT ORGAN, installed in the 1930s, is $1.25 million. Further repairs to an eighty year old organ are no longer cost effective and replacement can no longer be delayed. 4 From Sue Dunston regarding the KU-RING-GAI POPPY PROJECT: GOOD NEWS The Poppy Project is SIXTY PERCENT COMPLETE, thanks to the wonderful team that has knitted so many poppies. I am very proud of you knitters and grateful for your time and effort. I encourage you to keep up the good work and keep handing me completed poppies Sunday mornings or dropping them off at the church office. This is a big project, but I have faith that it will be completed by 21 August, the 100th anniversary of the assault on Hill 60. Please do keep the project and the knitters in your prayers. Donations towards the cost of the wool and we are using Australian wool would be gratefully received. I am absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed by the wonderful support I am receiving, here at St John s and also within the community, for this project honouring the 1,600 from Ku-ring-gai who served in World War I. From Fête Chairman Pat Gaudry: Do not forget to note in your diary that the FÊTE is on SATURDAY, 10 OCTOBER. Please be sure to tell all your friends to note the day in their diaries, too. Sue Dunston is planning an interesting event in the cemetery in keeping with the 100 year remembrance of World War I. Bill Killinger is receiving donations of cash or Woolworths vouchers to fund the major prize in the annual fundraising raffle. Donations are very welcome. Alice Dalby is coordinating donations for the Treasure Stall. Natalie Maschmeyer is helping coordinate the Plant Stall and would appreciate cuttings, expecting those being struck now to be fine plants by October. The Chocolate Wheel will need suitable prizes for young and old of new items: household, personal, toys, et cetera. Any items suitable for a Fête stall can be brought to the church office and stored in the Fête storage room. All the stalls from last year except the Value Bags will be operating this year. 5 WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY May 2015 Jesus said unto her: Give me to drink. John 4:7 The WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY, a commission of the National Council of Churches in Australia, begins today, being observed during the week between Ascension and Pentecost. This year s theme is taken from the Bible verse John 4:7. Jesus chose to cross Samaria on His way to Judea in Galilee, His route passing by the well of the Samaritan woman who came there to draw water. The Brazilian ecumenical group that prepared the Week Of Prayer For Christian Unity celebration invites us to use these two symbols the route and the water as images of the unity for which we pray. The ecumenical team from Queensland, Queensland Churches Together, invites us to consider what the path of unity might be, that the world may drink from the source of life, Jesus Christ, giving proper respect to diversity. Consider also that water quenches thirst and makes the desert bloom. The water that Jesus gives is the water over which the spirit of God hovered, the living water in which we were baptized. Prayer cards are being distributed at both worship services this morning. Do take one and keep it in your pocket or purse this week as you pray for Christian unity.
